Dutchman Racing's Doug Brauneck and Jeff.Heino won the 500 kilometer endurance race at Riverside International Raceway, averaging 91 .562 mph around the 2.56 mile, nine-turn road course. D / Yosh im ura / PBIIN Dsponsored riders had bu ilt up a 70second lead, a red flag on lap 79 regrouped the field, restarting from their original grid positions for an exciting race to the checkered flag. Dutchman ma y have won the race , but T eam Lockhart's Dale Quarterley and Larry Shorts were the real winners. Their runner-up placing gave them enough points to wrap up their second cons~cuth:e N'?'tional Endurance Championship, WIth one round remaining later this month. Kayo Racing GTU led th e seri es overall coming into this race, but were out-gunned by Lockhart, Quar terley raced for the lead in the early going, dici ng with Dutchman Raeing, Team Hyper-Cycle, and Team Suzuki, but was no match for the flying Dutch man. Team Suzuki's Wes Cooley and Thomas Stevens finished third. The Ontario, Ca lifornia-based team, WERA National Endurance Champions, took a break from that series to compete a t nearby R iverside. Stevens traded th e lead with Quarterley at the start, but fell back after running off the track. Later, a long pit stop put th em further behind. The team also su ffered from excessive fuel consumption, pitting at shor ter interv al s th an th e other leaders. The top three teams all rode Suz u ki GSXRIIOOs fitted with Michel in radial slicks. First place in th e GTU class, and fifth overall, fell to Team UNO 's Lee Anderson-tuned Action Honda CBR600 Hurricane, an imp ressive feat since Ri verside is co nsidered a " horsepower track. " Atlanta Lawn Sp rin kler/ Palmer &: Jones/NGK/ Kayo/Wiseco/Kerker-sponsored rid ers Troy Sorensen and Adam Smith fought off Ka yo R aci n g GTU, EMHO Racing, and Team Three throughout the event. Team Lockhart's Quarterley sat on the pole, with High Tech Racing's Danny Coe, Team Suzuki's Stevens, Team Wyoming's Ricky Orlando, and Team Bone rounding out the first row. Team H yp er Cycle 's Carry Andrews was in the middle of the second row , with Dutchman Racing's Brauneck on the outside on row three. Paul Smith Racing sat on the pole in GTU. Northstar Racing totaled their Yamaha FZ750 in practice, sending rider Gary Lenzmeier to the hosp ital, and doing serious damage to the track. Carner workers did what they could, but riders were warned that the surface was breaking up in turn six . Quarterley jumped into the lead at th e drop of the green flag , putting th e Lockhart ma ch in e in front of Suzuki 's St evens , H yper-C ycl e's Andrews , and High-Tech 's Coe. Stevens passed Quanerley down the long back straigh t, leading at the comp letion of the first lap. Dutchman 's Brauneck passed Coe for fourth, wi th Wyomin g 's Orlando foll owin g Coe in sixth. Orlan do was substituting for regular team rider Dr. David Keiffer , who was injured in a Sears Point crash . Mi chelin/ Shoei /Spectro /Power Sports-spon sored EMHO Ra cing led a six-rider du el for first in GTU, includi ng T eam U NO , Kayo Racing, Paul Sm ith Racing , Team Three, and C.R. rn Ra cing. EMHO's J eff and Kirk Hoeppner were experimenting with a solar-powered bat ter y cha rger on th eir tota l loss ig nitio n eq u ipped Honda CBR600 Hurrican e. They would la ter regret it as they had to stop to rep lace a dead battery. On th e third lap, Quanerley passed Stevens in the esses, runni ng off the track in the pr ocess. Stevens passed Quaneriey again on the back straight, but was relegated to second by the exit of turn nine. Brauneck had worked his way up to second by lap six , but fell back to fourth as Andrews assu med the lead o n th e H yper-Cycle Suzuki GSXRIIOO. The Michelin/Shoeil O'NeaIlEBC/Fox /Del Amo Suzuki/ Barnett/Mitchell-sponsored rider had an eventful week. His wife ga ve birth to a bab y boy, and his regular co-ride r and T eam Captain J eff H erzog was off getting married. About 15 minutes into th e race, Steven s made a mi stake in turn seven, losing valuable tim e to the leaders which would never be regained. Afterwards, . a dejected Stevens exp lained. " I was trying to pass Quarterley and got in to some dirt on the edge of th e track. I didn 't want to grab too m uch front brake and crash right there, so I ran off the track and got right back on again," he said. Stevens blamed a lack of practice for his misfortunes. He'd only gotten I0 laps in on Friday before the Suzuki's transmission failed, and Saturday morning's session just wasn 't enough. By the 15th la p, Brauneck had the Dutchman entry into first place. Five laps later, U.S. Suzuki/ AGV/ KalGard/Cam 2/Performance Machine/Michelin/RK-sponsored Lockhart retook the lead. Dutchman held seco nd with a 10 second interval to third place Hyper-Cycle, and a similar distance to fourth place Suzuki High Tech Racingremained in fifth. Team Three's Tom Aquino and Michael Graves were first in GTU on th eir Honda of Santa Monica/ Simi Honda/ Racers Supply/AI 's Cycle-supported Honda 600 Hurricane, Team UNO held second, with EM HO third, Kayo fourth , and C.R. m fifth. C.R. III Racing was headed up by none other than Calvin Rayborn II I. He was joined by co-riders Dave Morris and Troy Rovh, in an attemp t to gain extra track time in pre paration for the followin~ day 's Yamah a Western 600 Series final, The team com p leted 82 laps before calling it quits. Another rider looking to gai n . extra track time was Doug Polen. The 1987 AMA Supersport Ch ampion and defen ding Suz u ki GSXR750 Cup Champion was mas querading as " T ea m T exas" in preparation for the following day's
