An editorial in the October 19 issue of the Chicago (Illinois) SunTimes attacked superbikes as unsafe and recommended that Illinois legislators reimpose a mandatory helmet law. In language similar to U.S. Senator John Danforth 's (R-Missouri) now-dead 1987 Motorcycle Safety Act. the Sun-Times said. "Motorcycles already are dangerous enough. Now. a new breed of motorycle on the road is causing even more death and injury. A new. high-performance motorycle designed for racing can go twice as fast as the speed limit and accelerate twice as quickly as cars. A reasonable person has to wonder why these cycles. are being marketed for anything other than off-road racing when you consider a finding by the .Insurance Institute for Highway Safety: Deaths and severe injury occur almost twice as often on racing cycles driven on the highways as on any other kind of motorcycle. " A " Busi ness Notes" item in th e October 19 issue of Time Magazi ne pointed out that the U.S. Justice Dep art men t has taken no action against th e manufacturers of ATVs even though the Consumer Prod uct Safet y Commissi on as ked fo r a voluntary recall /refund program more than seven months ago. The California Senate Transporta tion Committee will conduct an interim hearing in southern California. Monday. November 9 . to obtain more information on AB36. the state's proposed mandatory helmet law. The hearing is slated for 9:30 a.m, at Excelsior High School in Norwalk. A spokesperson for the committee said the hearing will be a "fact-finding hearing" where expert witnesses will provide facts. not opinions. on the issues involved in helmet use. AMA Legislative Affairs Specialist Roy Janson will testify on behalf of the AMA. AB36. sponsored by Assemblyman Richard Floyd (0Gardena). was debated in the legislature earlier this year and probably will be rescheduled for further hearings when the legislature reconvenes in January. 1988. Bombardier has ceased production of Can-Am motorcycles. However. Horst Leitner. founder of ATK off-road motorcycles in Orange. California . says that. "ATK is picking up where Can -Am left off." ATK will be manufacturing two new two-stroke motocross models (with optional enduro kits available) powered by Rotax motors. the same motors used in Can-Am motorcycles . These new ATKs. a 250cc and a 406cc . will be available in November. according to Leitner.
