Scotty Brown had pretty much ca lmed down by the time he reached the pits. " What can I say?" he asked with out-stretched hands. " In my mind I had won that race. I would not have raced again. The night was done. I am happy with th e way thi ngs came out. " Scotty th en listened whi le brother Jeff was interview ed about th e broken tape in cid ent. The elde r brother flashed a sh eepish gri n a nd said , " I think it was mecha ni cal p roblems w it h th e ga te." Scotty laughed and piped in , " I do n' t kn o w about that. His clutch lever was the m echanical problem. " Talk around th e hotel on Saturday aft ernoon was optimistic. All of the riders seemed to say that this night would be different and they wouldbeat Scotty Brown in th e main. Wrong! Brown did win the main bu t there were a few chinks in his armor and for the first time of the season. he wasn't the top scorer after the heats. T ha t honor went to his brother Jeff and arch riva l Lazor. After Drym l a nd Jeff Brown won the two opening heats, Lazor and Scotty Brown got together in event three. It was all Bro wn as he got th e gate and led Lazor all the way to score three points but from that point on, Lazor didn't drop another digit in the hea ts. Briggs and Bart Bast tangled and brought out a red in event four . On th e restart it' was Briggs all th e way ahead of Martin and he was off to a better start than he got on Frida y night. Bart Bast , trying to make th e main for th e second even ing in a row , won even t seven over Jeff Brown. Brown, after bending his bike, had to ride his brother's machine and co me from the pe nalty line to claim the second place fin ish . Scotty Brown came from the po le to lead a ll the way and win event eig h t over Martin. Brigg s was seco nd unt il th e back straight o n th e fin al lap wh en he tas ted a pi ece of th e ice ·after Martin strea ked in side of him. Round two en ded with a not he r impressive ·Lazor victory . Sco tty Brown came into event II with seven wi ns in seven starts on the weekend but th at all changed. Jeff Brown . off th e pole, led it all the way while brother Scotty had to figh t off France's H ilaire for th e seco nd pl ace spot. By the ti me he shoo k h im off, it was far too la te to ca tch h is sibling. La zor ca me ou t in the nex t race and he va ulted a head o f Sco tt y Brown in the standings with a win over Mike Dela cy and Briggs. The third ro und ended wit h Bart Bast and Martin taking wins a nd enha ncing their main event aspirations. Lazor opened the final round wi th his thi rd successive victory. Scotty Bro wn , fro m ga te fo ur, was last o n the start of even t 17 and that cost him. Marti n was off and running. Bro wn quickl y got by Curry for th ird and neat the end of the first circuit he picked off Pei per for second. That is as far as he got . Martin wa s running quickl y a nd Brown wasn 't ab le to close th e gap a nd he had hi s econd runner-up fin ish in a ro w. The best race o f th e weekend proved to be heat 18. Hilaire and Delacv hammered on eac h other and trad ed th e lead back and forth over th e' first two circu its. J eff Brown joined the frav o n lap three and went inside both o( them in the third ·turn for the lead. Brown took the checkered over Hilaire and Dillon. Dela cy had fall en. Lazor pulled three with Martin on the ou tside. The four riders approached th e tapes a nd the fans came to their feet to see who would win the h igh dollar event. Scotty Brown got a flier on the start and set th e pa ce int o th e first bend over brother J eff. Lazor manned th e th ird spot but Martin went by him before th e end of th e fir st circui t. J eff Brown was stickin g to Scotty's rear tire and he gave him a so und tap as th ey co m p leted th e second circuit. Martin was hooked up and he too k second from Jeff Brown as th ey went down th e back chute the third time. H e then set h is sights on Scotty Brown and he ' slow ly bu t surely began to chase th e lead er down . Martin co nt in ued to close the gap but time ra n o u t. Sco tty Bro wn cro ssed the line with yet a no ther wi n. Martin, ri gh t o n Brown's rear tire, was seco nd with J eff Brown th ird and Lazor takin g th e wra p-u p. . Scotty took his victo ry la p and when he came to a halt at the start finis h line one of th e first people to weet hi m was brother Jeff. J eff was informed tha t he tagged his brother at the halfway point. H e responded by saying, " If I di d I didn 't feel it. I kn ew I was reall y close. " Tha t ca used Sco tty to laugh and say, " I think he was tryin g to tak e 'me ou t." J eff Bro wn the n countered back, " All nig ht long he (Scotty ) had been sayi ng, 'these gu ys a re chea ting on the ga te. Loo k at them roll. ' I co me o u t here (for th e main ) and th ink Scott would be the ' last one to ever do that. " Scotty sm iled and said, " T rue. I was the last o ne." Both broth ers laughed but then they got serious. "There is no tea m raci ng in th e United States but th ere is nothing lik e rid ing with your brother ," sa id J eff.
