Kling wa s the only rider able to break th e series dominance of Wisconsin rid er Scott Zampach. Zampach, who won every one of th e previous six ~ichigan C?P. ra ces,. crash ed early In the 50-mile race wh ile battling for \ th e lead. Zampach a lread y had the 1987 Michigan G .P. Championship wrapped up prior to the finale. On the starting grid it wa s Zampach on the pole with Ed Key and Dennis Martin beside him on th e front ro w. As th e green flag was thrown , Key and Martin rocketed away while Zampach sp u n the rear wheel , getting a terribl e start. At th e end of th e first lap it wa s Key, aboard a GSXR 750 , Mart in , r iding a FZRIOOO and John Eidenberger leading the field. Key and Martin held th eir positions on lap two but Eidenberger ran Wide on a tum a n d lost five or six positions, while local favorite Kling had moved up into third. By lap four of th e 25 lap event, Kling took over th e lead. Key a n d Dave Knapp battled wi th Kling for th e front spot, Phil Pummell made a charge on hi s VFR750 Superbike , as did last year's Michigan GP Champion J im Knipp. Both were in a h eat ed, second place sk irm ish wi th Kn app a n d Kling looking in co n trol of th e ra ce, pulling out a two-second lead with a.strin g of one-minute, 29-second lap urnes. Pummell 's drive wa s short- lived On lap seven he los t co ntro l on th e last tum, ~~h i ng the VFR heavil y. H e was uninjured, .Nea rin g the half-way point, Kling still held th e. lead but th e Knapp/ Knipp battle for seco n d carried the m to Kling's back tire. T o add to th e exci tem ent Zampach had recovered from h is bad start and was into third followed b y the hard -chargin g Eidenberger. Key sat back in sixth by himself. Attri tion became a big factor in the next few laps. Jim Knipps ' TZ tossed h im 20 feet in the air during a 80 mph h igh-side. Next series leader Zampach crashed in th e last turn that h.ad already taken Pummel I. A few laps later , a crash club forme d on the co rner w hen Dav e Schmidt d u mped it th ere too. Kling backed down to 1:32s after building a 13-second lead with only seven laps to go, Key, si tti n g in fou rth, had decided to put it o n cruise, sensing a secu re $250 in th e bank. Suddenly Key felt a hard jolt fro m behind an d before he knew it he was on th e ground, out of th e race. "1 can't bel ieve it l" sa id an irked Key. "I was just going into endurance mode for th e final laps and (Gen e) Burcham boots me off." . Kling looked to have things well In hand, but suddenly Eidenberger made a strong charge, gobbling up hugh chunks of lo st ground on Kling. In two laps Eidenberger's FZR took the lead in an amazing comeback. Once by. Kling, Eidenberger pulled away , turning I :28s effortlessly. Eidenberger .was in the driver's ~ea t. All he needed to do was keep It on two wh eels for four more laps, but one careless mistake cost h im the ra ce. Eidenberger went off th e track in the tum-eight sweeper, th e fastest turn on the track, crashed an d was lucky to walk away. With only two laps to go , and a 13 -s~cond lead, Kling became very cauuous and rode the last two laps' at a I :36 pace. Kling crossed the finish line fist in the air, he had survived and won th e most im portant race a t Grattan, h is home track. Knapp took an easy second, followed by Martin, Burcham and T exan Jeff Harder. Jamie James and John Eidenberger traded wins in the GSXR seri es rac es.
