Sacramento Mile (Continued from page 7) "When Parker caught up to Bubba, they started screwing around, tapping each other," said Rainey. "That's when we started catching -the,m." Rainey held second on the next goaround, but by lap 22 Shobert was back in the runner-up slot and playing tag with Parker again. Chandler maintained fourth, ahead of Jorgensen, Poovey, Graham, Jones, Day, Howard, Felicio and Hames. Chandler closed on Rainey on lap 22, then passed Rainey through turns three and four to take over third. The leading four riders formed a tightlyknit group, followed by Jorgensen, Poovey, Graham, Jones, Day, Howard, Hames, Felicio, Pearson, Eklund and Filice. Parker led coming out of turn four on the final lap. Shobert set him up and drafted past him on the front straight, but officials later ruled he didn"t ma'ke it by Parker until after the duo had crossed the finish line. Chandler, who had a chance at the win before· letting Parker and Shobert get away from him in turn three on the final lap, just edged Rainey at the finish. . "On the white flag lap I pulled up on Bubba, had the draft, and he pulled me through turns one and two," said Chandler. "On the back straight, I didn't know if I wanted to pass him or not. Then I screwed up going into three and let them get away from me." Jorgensen took fifth and was followed across the line by Poovey, Jones, Graham, Day, Howard, Hames, Felicio, Pearson, Eklund, Filice and Scott. Carr was credited with l7th place. When oHicials couldn't immediately decide who had won the race, Shobert and Parker clutched the checkered flag together and took a victory lap riding side by side, each with one hand on the flag. Parker's winning time of 15:34.77 wasn't a record, probably because he and Shobert kept the pace down to sa ve their rear tires. "I was just going to play it cool," .Shobert said. "I just started cruising. I've had tire trouble here before and I didn't want to blow it." "I ran behind Bubba about 10 laps then thought I ought to run a little harder," said Parker. "But we sort of paced ourselves. We didn't get crazy. Tires were a big factor." ''Tires were a big deal," echoed Chandler. "For the whole race, we all were being conservative. We knew we couldn't go for it all." • Spect 0 SpO " 12,733 miles in eleven days~ without an oil change and without sleep.
