Williamson whips WapellaMX By Bill Holt 38 WAPELLA, IL, SEPT. 20 Todd.Williamson had a busy day at the last event of the season at the Bloomington-Normal M.C. clubgrounds. Between announcing, scoring, scheduling and working on the track he found time to ride both motos of the Open and .the 250cc classes. He proceeded to demolish the compeition in all four motos and· take the overall in both classes, making him the only double winner of the day. In the Open class he rode a borrowed Kawasaki to fend off Kevin Lane and John Gano in both mOlOS and in the 250cc A class, which was combined with the I 25cc A class, his main competition came from .l25cc A pilot David BrilL Brill kept ¢e pressure on U).roughout both motos but could never overtake the highflyingWilliamson_ Ron Hindahl was close behind to take the second spot in the 125cc A class and Darren Morgan brought his Sponland Honda home in second in the 250cc A division behind Williamson. Jess Robinson took back-to-back moto wins in the 50cc class over Shawn Kelley. Jon Rife topped Nick Spierowski and Jess Robinson in back-to-back motos of the 60cc class to grab the overall there. The 80cc Juniors chased Ben Varnell through both motos as they watched him take the overall in that class. Andy Hendrickson beat John Rife for the second spot. Chance Persons kept Clint Leasch and John Sillery at bay for the overall in the 80cc Senior class. Greg Griffin was uncatchable in the Senior class, acing Dandy Dave Kelley and Ron Lanthrop who battled wheel-to-wheel all day over second spot. The Vintage class was one of the largest of the day and the overall went to double mota winner Darren Morgan. Cameron Cumpston finished second in both motos. Randy Trowbridge pulled his old ride out of the back corner of the shed to nab the third spot. Tony Parkhill topped both motos of the 125cc B class to take the overall but the action behind the stylish . Parkhill was fa t and furious. When the final scoring was done it was Wes McClara with a 6-2 day taking the second spot over Scot Foster who posted a 5-3 finish to take third. In the first 250cc B mota Cameran 'Cumpston looked like A class material leading Paul Hofreiter and Jon Hafermann home. In the second mota Cumpston seemed to run out of gas a little but some of it 'must have been taken by Brad Gustafson_ Gustafson blasted out of the gate and slowly pulled away from the field, pushing the top riders of the first moto back a notch. Cumpston did have enough for the overall win with Hofreiter taking second. Results 50: 1. Jess Robinson (Yam); 2. Shawn Kelley (Kawl. . 60: 1. John Rile (Kaw); 2. Nick Spierowski (Kaw); 3. Smith sails in' "Dog Gone It" H&H By Ann~ & Tom Van Beveren LUCERNE VALLEY, CA, SEPT. 20 Team Husqvarna's Dan Smith scored a wire-to-wire winat the "Dog Gone It" Hare & Hound, sponsored by the Prairie Dogs M.C. and held at Cougar Buttes. After leading over 70 dusry miles • that ranged from hard-on-the-gas roads to rock-littered, enduro-type trails, Smith's lead was cut to the bone when. he lost the trail just a few miles from the finish line. "Everything was going fine until right at the end of the second loop," Smith said. "Dan (Ashcraft) and I both got lost coming back in and spent about a minute or a minute and a half looking for ribbon. We ended up finishing in the arne order that we went into it, but I only had about 30 seconds over him at the end. It was pretty close." Smith got his 430XC 0(( to a flying start and_ was dicing it out for the lead with Team Honda's Ashcraft as the front-runners reached the bomb. The course hit a fast section just after the bomb and Smith was out in front with Vet 250cc pilot Mark Zoller and Ashcraft hard on his heels. The terrain got tighter and the pace slowed for the second half of loop one, but Smith did not miss a beat. He completed the 37-mile section in just under an hour and headed 0(( into the 32 miles o[ loop two, a full minute ahead of Ashcraft:. Darren Cartwright had recovered from a dismal start and worked his way up to grab third overall, just two minutes behind Ashcraft as the racers headed into pit row, while Don Griewe rocketed from II th at check one to claim fourth. Paul Krause held the number five spot, and Eric Hallgath had the 125cc lead in 11th overall. The rocks and technical terrain of loop two marked' a complete change from the fast-paced sand of the first loop. Six miles into the second loop, Smith was still ou.t in front and had stretched his lead to a minute and a half over Ashcraft. .Griewe moved up to grab third overall from Cartwright but an almost bald rear sprocket forced the hard-charging Kawasaki pilot to drop out of the race just a few miles later putting Canwright back into third. But then it was Krause's turn to come storming through and Cartwright ended up in fourth again, battling it out with the fast rising Mike McDonald. Smith was still goirrg strong as the course wove through serpentine trails above Anderson Dry Lake. Ashcraft held second, Krause had opened up a one-mile lead over Cartwright, and Thomas had moved up to claim fifth. But Smith's trouble-free ride bit the dust with less than 10 miles to go. "I just ran out of ribbon," said the Husky ace, "and then (Dan) Ashcraft arrived and the two of us spent a couple of minutes riding around trying to find the trail. I carne out of it first and from there it was full speed to the finish line." After 70 miles of grueling racing, Smith powered in to take the checkered flag with just 30 seconds to spare. Krause crossed the finish line just two minutees behind Ashcraft to capture third overalL Cartwright took the 250cc honors in fourth overall, while fifth overall and second in the 250cc division went to Thomas, who described his race as "eating dust and picking people' off."
