The Cactus Flats terrJin is mainly typical southern California trials material, involving huge sandstone rock slabs. Because of this type of terrain some sections appeared much worse than they really were. Section seven for Experts was not one of these sections. Many Expert riders con: suited each other as to the best line to take. The line that enabled the riders to continue through the sectiOn involved a five foot shear drop off with only a bike length .available to start a steep left turn up a 10 foot high ban,ked rock wall. Jodi Ricnardson broke the ice with a three for the first Expert rider to reach the end- flags. Both Hamonn and Pyle scored less than a three here on their first rides. Senior Advanced rider Art Webster once again battled his way through to first with 84 points lost. Gary Conrad, aboard a new Fantic 303, was riding well on the first two Igops although he couldn't match Webs- . ter's final loop and had to settle for 91 points and third place behind Jack Hemingway. Thomas Englehart dominated the Intermediate class aboard his 350 Yamaha with only 26 points. Second place went to Clive Hannon with 38 points,. who is. now used to his Merlin. Walt Robles had a hard day but managed-to finish in third place. 'The Novice class battle for first place was decided on the last loop by total cleans, with David Rector claiming first, with six points and 26deans. Brad McCellan was second with six points and 25 cleans. Third place honors were snatched up by Guy Ward with 10 points lost. ,Stacy Sargent dropped only three points to win the Beginners class. Del HaJ?land scored 17 points and nearly had his winning streak smashed by Al Nourian with 18 points in' the Senior Beginners. Results EX: ,. Tom Hammon (Yam) 39 pts.; 2. Dave Pyle (Fan) 50; 3. Morktops. p,.emier 500 at Steamboat MX By Michael Green STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO, SEPT. II CVRG Wrecking Crew ber Fred Mork pulled come-from-behind win beautifully prepared memoff a on a Mork Racing/Castrol/Shoei-sponsored 500cc ESO single during roun.d-three of the California Vintage Racing Group's Championship MX S~ries, held in the mountains of Steamboat Springs. This year's event was held in a large field located below Saturday's road race course, and was promoted by Steamboat's own Timberline Trailriders. Thanks to the city, Timberline and CVRG volunteers, plus Dick Mann, a great course was laid out with ribbons and hay bale£. Most of the .track was fairly smooth, but there was one very tricky section - just as it had been in the early '60s. This year's event pulled over 120 single entries. Team Obsolete's Marco Polo, aboard a newly-restored Matchless G50-MX, grabbed the holeshot in ~e first motO' of the Premier-500 (Pre- cOO 0') ...-4 ~ (1) o .. ,.c u o Tom Hammon won the Expert class at the Cactus Flats trials. '65) Amateur race,. followed closely by Beno Rodi's Indian-Velo single while Mork and Larry Ubaldi were both caught off guard, getting away late. . After the start, Ubaldi, Matchless mounted, and Mork were away' and charging hard to make lost ground on the G50 of Polo. Mork firtished third in moto one, while Ubal"di took first Expert. . In the second go around, Ubaldi and Mork took the lead, with Beno Rodi and Polo in tow. Mork took the win over Rodi, with Polo down to third, while Ubaldi again took the win in the Expert class. Earlier in the day the Vet (Expert) race was held for old bikes of any size, and riders over 30. Since the grid was full of Pre-'74 two-strokes, it was surprising 10 see a four-stroke third in turn one,. and first by turn two. Californian Butch Cochran was at the controls, not on his Triumph 40incher, but Polo's Team Obsolete Matchless' G50. Lap after lap, Cochran showed just how fast the early 1960s, 500cc 325-pound, four-stroke could really go. Wild man Peter Ford, with his 250cc Ossa, had a slow start and climbed no higher than third, even after harrassing the Maico of J. Wessels'. With less t.han a lap to go, Wessels finally caught Cochran, who looked as if he was getting tired. With seven tight, rough turns left, Wessels' potent Maico barely edged Cochran for the win. 'In molO two, Cochran was again the crowd pleaser, plus the favorite for the overall' win. But Cochran missed two sllifts right off the start, dropping him out of the top six, and Wessels' Maico was out front to stay. Ford was running third again, behind Mike Menesine's CZ. Ford hounded the CZ rider for some laps, but was unable to make any pass stick. Cochran climbed through the ranks to finish fourth on the Matchless. In Old Timer action, Dick Mann ran away with the program until his motor let go. Mann later said, "It sounded expensive." Bill McClinton took over the top spot aboard a 500cc CCM in both motos, followed by Jim Keeton's CZ. Results VET EX: 1. J. Wassels (Mail; 2. M. Menesine (CZ); 3. ~. Ford (Oss); 4. B. A large rider turnout was on hand for the WKCRA event. Williams went to the front of the 250cc main with John Lewis and Menser following down the back stretch. On lap three Menser slipped past Lewis and tried to close the gap on the leader, but laps ran out and Williams took the win. Robbie Grief and Charles' Fennell followed Menser and Lewis, rounding out the top five. Williams holeshot the Open class final with Recil Hart and Menser hot on his heels.. The lead trio broke away from the pack and Menser moved around Hart after three laps. Two more laps and Menser drove underneath Williams and never looked back. The final order read Menser, Williams, Hart, David Flowers and Andy Richardson. Eddie Reagor was in fine form in taking a £lag to £lag runaway victory in the 125cc class. Joel Barr9w took a narrow second after a race long bout with Mike Mayher. Grief, T.J. Burnette and Chuck Allen followed the trio. Barrow was unstoppable the rest of the night and took the 200cc win over Jimmy Allen. Mike Voss filled the winners circle. john Sherrard nailed the 80cc class holeshot but Barrow took over on lap two and took the class win. Sherrard ran a good line and stayed second, topping Tommy Hayden, Chris Boone and Burnette. Aaron Ladd led every lap of the main but came up half a wheel short at the line to Tommy Hayden in the 60cc final. The two riders were a good bit ahead of another tight battle between Jarrod Barrow, Jon Camp and Chris Boone. Barrow came out on top. Results SPDWY: ,. Alan Dewey (Jaw); 2. John Gambill (Jawl.
