Gordon Ward (45) leads 500cc Pro winner Tommy Watts in the first mota. Ward finished fourth overall. CMC/Dodge Truck Trans-Cal Series: Round 3 Watts, Stanton, • aVIs coo 0 Sunrise wins. • By Troy Scott ADELANTO, CA, SEPT. 20 Kawasaki's Tommy Watts, Yamaha's Jeff Stanton and Honda-supported Ty Dav.is took home overall wins in the 500,250 and 125cc classes, respectively, when CMC's 8 Trans-Cal Series moved to the I brutal and technically tight unrise Cycle Park MX Track. Kawasaki' _tonghold on the big-bor class didn't let up in Adelanto and when th' dust leared ir wa Watt who led Team Green into the winner's circle. Kawasaki-mounted Mike Larson took the ill t moLO win in the 500 c divi ion, but he had it given to him when two other Kawa aki rider Gordon 'Ward and Wall; - tangled and went down on lap four. Wall remounted to fini h second, Honda rider Willie imons LOok third, and Ward finished a distant l2th. Moto two wa an all-Watts show, even though Ward al 0 was in tbe hunL Watts took the win, Ward trailed in econd and third went LO Honda rider Doug O'Donnell. tanton capitalized on other riders' problems to wio both beats and the overall in the 250cc Pro class. Malcolm Smith's Yamahasupported Brian Manley took an early lead in the first moLO, but dropped out on lap four with a dead ignition, leaving Stanton to inherit the lead. He rode to a convincing win over Yamaha-supported Jdf Mabery and Shaun Kalos. Suzuki's Willie Surratt grabbed the holeshot in the second moLO and was pulling away wben something punctured the front tire on his RM, once again leaving Stanton to take con trol of the lead. Whi Ie Surratt struggled, Stanton led Mike Kied· rowski and Yamaha rider Billy Frank across the finish line. The brutal Sunrise Cycle Park facility demanded much from a motorcycle, and nowhere was that more evident than in the l25cc Pro class. Honda-mounted Mike PascareUa nailed down an awesome holeshot at the start of the first l2Scc moto, wliile fellow Honda rider Bob Moore gave chase and eventually got by for the lead. Kawasaki-supported Kiedrowski was chaTl~ing hard on the leaders, running JUst behind thirdplace rider Michael Craig, on a Yamaha, when his bike was the first of many to seize. Moore led Pascarella and Craig at the finish. Mike Young gave Gagiva their first holeshot of the series at the start of the second l25cc moLO, but Young's lead was short - lived. His throttle housing let go when he launched his bike off a sky-high jump on lap two. This let Davis slip by for the lead while Pascarella held a solid second, which would have given him the overall had his Honda not seized three turns from the finish. Davis took the win, followed by Yamaha· supported Doug Dubach and Kawasaki rider Bader Manneh. The first round of action in the 500cc Pro class saw Yamaha rider Russ Wageman capture a pictureperfect holeshot, followed by Ward, O'Donnell, Willie Simons and Walts. Wageman retired with rear end problems on lhe first lap, leaving Ward in front. Walt, however, was charging hard and by lap two had passed Simons and O'Donnell and had moved up on Ward by lap three. The· order for the top four remained the same on lap six, while Larson' had gotten past Kawasaki rider Dan Berg to take over fifth. Larson began a harge on lap seven that saw him move into third, behind Ward and Watts, while imons and Berg rounded out the top five. Walts moved in on Ward and began to try anything he could LO get by. The two riders collided in a tight tum on lap eight a'nd both went down, allowing Lar on to take the lead. Walt was the first to remount, getting up quickly enough to hang onto second, but Larson was uncatchable. Ward, a little shaken, remounted slowly and fini hed 12th. Larson took the win, followed by Watts, imon, Berg and Reynolds. "He was moving up on me." Ward said after the moLO. "I was getting tired and I had been hutting him off in that corner, and he tri d to pas there. He t·boned me and got by." MoLO twO was a carbon copy of the fir t heat. Wageman nailed another perfect hole hot, followed losely by Wall, Simons, Honda rider Jim Ortner and Ward. Larson bail d o££ at the tart and was runni ng dead last. By lap twO Ward was charging{)o the front-runners, and on the fourth lap leader Wageman cased hi Yamaha in a technical section and dropped to seventh. Watts took over the lead and never looked back, riding to an easy win and the overall. Ward finished second, O'Donnell held off Wageman for third and fifth went to Reynolds. .First moLO action in lhe 250cc class saw Honda-mounted Terry Fowler gel the jump on the rest of the field. followed by Manley and Honda rider
