Dengler blitzes Beehive Enduro By Paul Clipper/Trail Rider Magazine MAURIGETOWN, NJ, AUG 30 With the help of his enduro computer, Bruce Dengler mastered all the odd speed averages of Competition Dirt Riders' Annual Beehive Enduro, and increased his 1987 ECEA series wins to four. . The Chatsworth, New Jersery, Honda rider rode as hot as he could in what is known locally as a timekeeper run, and made the finish with nine points lost and the overall in hand. This leaves Dengler one win up on Jack La££erty Jr, ECEA's ]986 champion, and two wins ahead of Kevin Bennett, both of whom ride for Millville Cycles in South Jersey. Until' the Beehive, there was a scant handful of series points separating these three riders, and the top spot has been traded more often than a '67. 1m pala. Bennett actually had the Beehive win in hand, having beaten Dengler by two seconds at the first tiebreaker and by 50 seconds at the second one. He was cruising to the finish, in the easier final sections of the run, when his Yamaha YZ250 simply stopped running. Eventual inspection revealed that he had suffered a "meltdown" of the entire lower ignition system,' and all he could do was come in' on the back of a truck. I.:a££erty's luck was not much better. "J had a decent ride," said Husqvarna-sponsored Lafferty, "but I just wasn't going fast enough." He finished fourth overall'with II points. Third was KTM rider Ken Yankowski, also with 11; and second overall went to Chris Puff, who was also the only rider to drop 10 points. Fifth went to Honda rider Drew Smith, out for a family outing with his father and ~rother ("Rats" and "Bones" Smith). Smith joined the rest of the eleven-poimers. Nichole Schlotterbeck had to take a back seat in the Women's class for a change - she's been winning practically every ECEA event so far. Tops in her class, however, was Linda Luhn with' 30 points, while Nichole carded a 32. Third was Emma Leigh-Larsen with a 63. Rich Mollenkopf Jr. topped the A class riders with a 1,2-point run; good enough for the A High-Point trophy, while J. Craig Mayer took the B overall with a 14. High Point C was the .exclusive property of Dennis ,Zurawski Jr., who finished three points lower than any of the other C riders. There were 80 riders coinpeting in the C Lightweight class alone. Mostly sandy trails greeted the riders, and the CDR club cleaned out many miles of old, hard!y used paths. Because of this there were few whoops to comend with - at least for the early riders. The Beehive is locaIJy known as a "timekeeper run," although this year the averages were boosted a bit, and very dry, dusty conditions made "' rl-I Q.) ...0 o .... u o W ell, if that is import ed, museum quality D'Arches 22"x19" paper that carries an original Jeff Gundlach Supercross printed in nine permanent colors and was breathed on, signed and numbered by the artist, I'd do it now. . _ S I upercross is the last limited edition fine art print commissioned by Cycle News for you, the reader.
