Jackson jams at Morrison HS By Merle Acord 28 MORRISON, IL, SEPT. 13 :ream Suzuki's Junior Jackson, riding a RM250, -took time away from the Amateur motocross wars and won the second round of the Spectro Oil/Bike Barn-sponsored Illinois Cross Country Racing Fall Hare Scrambles Series, finishing one minute ahead of Jon Bush, who was aboard a Bike Barn Can-Am 250. "I had a lot of fun'today and really enjoy hare scrambles," said Jackson, "But I'll stick to motocross. I had a poor start. It took about three kicks to fire up'and that put me down to about 10th off the line, and I had to follow those guys through the creek crossings and mud holes." Jackson kept picking off riders and by the third lap had taken over the lead. "I was feeling pretty comfortable at about the one hour mark," said Jackson, "and when they gassed me and I didn't lose the lead, J thought that if I didn't have any troubles I should be able to win." "I had a good start and got the holeshot," said Lightweight A class winner and Can-Am rider Jeff Mdntyre, "but I was so tense that my arms pumped up and I had to slow down and (Harvey) Whipple passed me. I relaxed then and was all Iight." "I kept missing shifts," said Kawasaki-mounted Whipple when asked why he pulled off at the end of the third lap. "I had lost the bolt in the shift lever and it was turning on the spline. By the time we made repairs I was almost a lap down. Jackson and I live close together and practice together ,a lot and I knew I couldn't make up a lap on him." Bush, number two expert, dumped his Can-Am off the start and tweaked his throttle wrist. "I had a good ride," said Bush, "But I needed everything going for me today. I never saw Jackson after the start and that's too bad; for I wanted to ride with him. He's a good rider and I could have learned something from him. " Jeff Stevenson, third Expert riding a KTM from his Action Cycle Shop, knew Jackson as an old adversary from the motocross tracks. "I was going to put some space between us during the first few laps," said Stevenson, "When 1 missed a gear when I was setting up to jump the creek. The front wheel dropped and I went over the handlebars. I don't know what I hit. I was knocked silly. I came around and was able to ride again but it was never the same the rest of the day." . John Mercer dominated the Lightweight B class while Steve Fieldler won the dice in the Heavyweight Bs from Can-Am riders Tom Balk and Kevin Diamond. Kawasaki-mounted Troy Bruder won the Mini class with a two minute bulge over Kevin Diamond. Eric Clapp held the lead brieQy, but lost the exhaust and had to pit for repairs that dropped him to a distant third. Eric Prudy took the first place trophy in \he Mini Novice class. Results 0/A: 1. Williams waUs at BrainerdRR By Gary Sjoqyist BRAINERD, MN, AUG. 29-30 Top Line Cycle/Loftgen Racing/ Magnum Racing's Scott Williams was the big winner at the final round of the Central Roadracing Association's '87 season, held at Brainerd International Raceway. Williams won four sprint races, placed second in another, and was half of the overall winning team in Saturday's three-hour endurance race. Other notable spint performances carne from Jeff Johnson and Bryon Lambert; each took home two wins. In Production Sprints the Ultralight class was won easily by Burnsville Motorsport's'Glen Christianson on a Yamaha SRX600. The Light- weight division was a battle of RZ350s and was won by John Mensch who posted a 15-second wiR over Ron Jacobson. The Middleweight class was another steady win for Bill Young on a Honda Hurricane. Young's lap times were very consistent, falling within'a range of .20 of a second for the entiIe eight laps. Heavyweight Production was won by Mike Ruehle on a 750cc Ninja. Young just lost second to the GSXR750 of MRA racer Lance Holst. Williams was leading this race, but 'pulled off rather than be protested; his Canadian GSXR Limited is not legal in Heavyweight Production. In both Lightweight classes, Supersport and Superbike, it was Jeff Johnson. posting strong flag-to-flag wins. Bryon Lambert took similar wins in the Middleweight Supersport and Middleweight Superbike classes. But it was Williams who turned in' the most impressive performance of the weekend, posting wins in the Unlimit~d Production, Heavyweight Supersporl, and Heavyweight and Unlimited Superbike ' classes. Nicknamed "Dominator" for his flag-to-flag wins, Williams has only been beaten by National-level riders this year at BIR, and has led nearly every lap of every race he's been in all year long. The weekend event also saw the resolution of the '87 CRA points chase, with club president Bill Young taking overall honors over Wes Wicklund and Williams. The final point standings offered a testimony to the CRA's new format for 87; the top 10 finishers included three Hurricane 6OOs, two SRX600 Yamahas, one each 750 Suzuki, inja and Yamaha, a Suzuki GS550, and a RZ350 Yamaha. In fact, both Young and Wicklund rode completely stock Hurricanes, relying on consistent lOp finishes and the competitive power of the CBR600s to garner their points_ Results ULT/L PROD EX: 1. Mitchell PRUDENVILLE, MI, SEPT. 13 Dan "The Gris" Griswold blasted his way to his first overal-l victory today at the Whitetail Enduro. Riding a Lansing Cycle 430 Husqvarna Griswold dropped just one point, narrowly beating Ricky' Scharphorn by 'seven seconds on the tie-breaker checks. John Hoffman and Mike Keen also dropped one point on their way to first and second plaee, respectively, in the Expert Class. Eldon and Ed Keen, Mike's brothers, dropped two and thIee points for third and fourth place, respectively. There were many low scores due to the first loop being somewhat of a time keeper. Eyen though there was plenty of single track, it was all fast and open. The second loop was where most of the points where taken, with the exception of Ricky Scharphorn who zeroed the loop.
