Team Suzuki finished 17th after falling twice in the rain. out of the pits repairing crash damage, some of the slower but surer-footed teams began to look like contenders. Team Rapid, Team Stench, Team Bio-Soles and Blackwater Racing all took advantage of the misfortunes of the top teams and were filling the leader board. One team quick to recover from crashing was Sol max. The crew had the bike back in racing condi tion in no time, and Scott Russell went back out turning 2:12s (two seconds a lap faster than the rest of the field) and began gobbling up lost ground. Team Suzuki, by contrast, went the other way. Twenty minutes after Paulk's crash, Stevens went dowQ in the same place. "Crew chief Jim Labine had the bike running well, even with all this water. He had a neat shield over the carbs; everything was worked out. The one thing we should have done was weld huge crash bars on to the side of the bike the way our riders are riding today," said an upset Team Captain John Ulrich. Team Suzuki eventually finished 17th and remained in second place in the point standings behind Human Race Team. Team FBI had some help from Human Race Team's Andy Fenwick. Fenwick rode on FBI's Kawasaki EX500 and turned faster lap times than he did on the Human's FZR750. "I felt more confident on the smaller machine in this weather," said Fenwick. FBI won the Lightweight class after a race-long battle with National Fiberglass. Russell stayed out on the Solmax machine for the final hour and passed Bio-Soles and Blackwater to take the win. As Sol max's Terry Bailey explained it, "Russell pitted and said he still felt good, which was fine with me. I didn't want to go back out there." Soltnax finished 101 laps on the 2.4-mile circuit, averaging 80.8 mph. Bio-Soles and Blackwater both finished with 98 laps. Team Rapid and Team Gamma rounded out the top five finishers. Solmax Racing is sponsored by Dunlqp/EBC/Bell/Tsubaki/KalGard and Easy-Living Yamaha. Sun¢ly's sprint races were cancelled due to high water on the track. • Resufts O/A: 1.
