San Jose Mile . (Continued from page 7) CO his professional career in the early seventies and scored his first National win in the 1974 Syracuse Mile. . Although Jorgensen stayed with the front runners for several laps past lap 10, it soon became apparent that four riders were going to take the race down to the final lap. Lap 16 saw Shobert, Chandler and Carr cross the . line three abreast, and also saw Graham, who had just passed Jorgensen for fourth, lose his exhaust system's "muffler" in turn one. Graham received the black flag on . the next lap. Despite being reminded that San Jose is under close scrutiny by county officials for violation of the circuit's most stringent noise emission standard, Graham was irate. "So i lost my boom box. Big deal. Was I endangering the other riders? They (officials) don't understand tha t this is the wa y I earn my living." Carr led Shobert across the line by inches on lap 18 with Chandler and . Parker right on their rear fenders. The final five laps saw the quartet of front runners swapping positions all around the oval and their drafting maneuvers allowed them to open up a five-second gap on Jorgensen who was running a lonely fifth and close up enough on Howard, who was ru'nning 14th and last and about to be lapped, that he was given the blue "move over" flag. Howard not only moved over he nearly came to a stop in turn two as though he intended to watch the last lap shoot-out from there. The last lap had started with Carr and Shobert crossing the line sideby-side with Parker and Chandler fonowing. Carr led down the back straigh t and as they entered turn three for the fina~ time it appeared as though Shobert and Parker were right where they wanted to be and Chandler, who dove into three behind them, was out o( the hunt. Exiting turn four it was Carr in front with Parker pulling to his outside and Shobert to his inside. "] thought I had a good shot at it," said Parker, "but you can't beat horsep. ower and Bubba pulled us all down to the line." Carr knew that being out front out of (our on the last lap wasn't the place to be and he watched first Shobert and then Parker pull even and then by him as they crossed the line. '1 had a harder race at S'pringfield but this was a close second," said Carr. When told that he had established a new San Jose 25-lap record time of 15 minutes, 30.297 seconds, topping' the 15:30.796 set by Chandler 10 May of this year, Shobert said, "I didn't think the track was up to. a record. It was tacky in one and two, but real slippery in turns three and (our." Shobert concluded with, "One of my goals is to win Ascot next weekend." If he does, the Numb,'l One plate will be his for the third s'traight year. • Results ~ . - F I I I I I o Bill me with the first i..ue. o Check or Money Order enclosed (make out payable to Cycle News) I CHARTER Subscription Order Form I I I I- I I I I I I I I I 25·LAP NAnONAL: 1.
