line, then you know how I am.
That says more about me than being a member of the ftrst U.S. Silver Vase ISDT team with Steve
McQueen in 1964 and winning a
gold medal. I'd do ~ything to win
- and get the trickest equipment.
If I. couldn't buy it, I'd make it.
When my friends wanted the same
pieces, that started me off developing foam air mters, short levers,
and Gold Belt kidney belts.... Oh,
one more thing: Nobody else has
ever won the Greenhorn on a lOO!"
Bike. currently owned: "I
have an XR Honda enduro, which
I ride, and a 1953 Ariel Square
Four, which I don't, and a 1951
NSU Rennsport Fox from the Catalina race, which I keep for sentimental reasons."

"gazlne: "Dumbest thing I
ever did was tum down Peter
Fonda when he wanted me to double for him in 'Easy Rider.' Smartest thing I ever did was edit the
first DIRT RIDER magazineand keep on reading it. Not because I want to know what's already happened, but because DIRT
RIDER tells you what's going
to happen."
Job de.crlptlon: "I create new
products that make off-road motorcycles more competitive and riders
more comfortable."
Riding history: "I've always
liked 'little' bikes because it was
easy for me to win races on them.
The factories liked that, too, so I
had a lot of good rides and became
the first guy in America to win a
race on an NSU, Honda, Suzuki
and Maico - all of them 250cc
or under."
Track record: "I've had a lot
of 'firsts' in my career, starting
with winning the 125ee class at the
1953 Catalina Grand Prix. I was
the first guy to ride a motorcycle
from Tijuana to La Paz against the
clock, which started the Baja 1000
races. But if you know I won the
1967 Greenhorn 500-inile National
enduro first overall on a l00cc
Zundapp, carrying the bike on my
back up the last hill to the fmi~h
