Catch 22 Re Dave H oleman 's H ow You Can Win column in th e Augu st 16 issu e: The reason many bikers in Hawaii don't have licenses is because yo u need in surance on your bik e to take the MSF co urse and licen se rid in g lest. But you can 't get insurance until you . pass an MSF co urse a nd have a licen se. Ca tch 221 They say. " Borrow a friend's bike." Yeah, right. BILL FRESN AK - H onolulu, HI Ya-hoo scale I wou ld like to express th anks' to Will y Armard io of Yamaha a nd T erry Wh vtal of SMX for th e grea t j ob th ey d id hosting th e rece n t Yamaha YSRSO World Ch ampionshiP . Race a t Willow Sp rings, Cal iforma o n August 30. Our group of .road racers from the U tah Sport Bike Associa tio n was very impressed with the hospitality provided by not on ly Yamaha and SMX, but also all th e o ther racers fro m Californ ia. T exas , etc., as well as Bellfl ower Yam ah a a n~ T&O Ya maha. Our o n ly disappo m trneru was the absence of the J apa nese a nd Canadia n learn s (and the absence of a good fifth gear sweeper on the track). YSR50 fever is growin g strong here in Utah , a nd th e " T rack Chal- lenge" series has been imme nsely successfu l in bringing the thrill of road racing to people who wouldn't o the rw ise risk a $5000 bik e or injury. As a racer of " big" bikes as well as my YSR , I think a good wh eel-towh eel dice o n th e YSR is righ t up th ere o n th e " Ya-Hoo sca le" with m y FZ600; the cos ts and risks are the only things tha t a re diminished . Wit h eager race faces, we loo k forward to future YSR50 compe tition. The US BA has excelle nt YSR ra~e. tra cks and hopes to host a YSR National next year. Before closing; allow me to tha nk the following Uta h Yamaha dealers for sponsor ing the USBA Seri es: Carey's Cycle Cent er, Craig's, Cycle Inn. Plaza Cycle, and Vesco's. And a specia l th ank yo u to Craig 's Yamaha for providing th e USBA team with a motorhome for th e World Championship. J IM BILLINGSLEY USBA President Salt Lake City, UT Off the back burner Aft er readi ng Doug Dubach 's letter concern ing J erry Campbell , I a m reminded of a letter I sho uld have writte n months ago, but so mehow these things get pu t o n th e back burner a nd a re often forgotten . I'd lik e to lake thi s o p port un ity to say, "Thank you , J err y Campbell " · fro m all of us a t th e races. For th e past few years yo u have kept so many of us racing. Your help a nd knowledge and professio nal service as a . Kawasaki T eam Green tech rep went far beyond th e call of duty. It never seemed to matter how fas t th e rider ~as, only who needed you a t th e urne, I know of no West Coast rider o n a green bi ke who d idn 't feel relief at the sight of you a nd your box va n in the pits. T hanks again, J erry . . Back to Mr. Dubach : You refer to Jerry Campbell's views on th e fin e points of th e rules. Doug, ru les are rul es, just as parts are parts. As to yo u r sugges tio n tha t J erry feel s you're too o ld to ra ce a t Ponca Ci ty, after read ing your lett er you cleared up a ny questi on in my mind, and proba bly change d his. DARYL NABER Red lands, CA Wind Cont in ued from page 2) Ri ck Ryan, J eff Mat iasevich and Mike La rson were winners in the 125, 250 a nd 500cc Pro classes , respectively, at ro u nd two of th e Dodge T ruckl CM C T ra ns -Ca l Mot ocr oss Series held at Sandhill Ranch in Brentwood , Ca lifornia. Complete coverage next week. Casey Wada of Kayo Corporation was seen at the September 1113 Las Vegas International Motorcycle Aftermarket Expo with his new wife Miki. The couple t ied the knot in Tokyo. Japan. on September 9 . . CO R RECTION: Road race rs sho uld not e th ai th e AMA CCS event a t Summit Point , West Virginia, will THE NATIONAL -P PERS A A - few weeks ago , Dou g Ch andl er was q uo ted as saying that the AMA Grand National Cham pio ns hip title chase was abou t all over after Bubba Shobert won his fourth dirt trac k Na tio nal of th e year. Not true. T he fin al three d irt tr ac k Natio nals lake p lace in Californ ia the last two weeks in September a nd the first week in October, and I can coun t a t least four riders who have a shot a t th e Nu mb er One plate. San Jose is th e first of the three races and it will run on Sunday, September 20, Ch andler has been the winner there th e last two times out. Shobert is a four-time winner at San Jose and Ricky Graham has been hom e first o n one occas ion . Scouy Parker is also still in the hunt a nd even .though he has never wo n San J ose, he has recorded a record five second pl ace fini sh es. Le t's not give the titl e a way before we a t least run the San Jose Mile for th e second a nd fin al tim e this year. For those of you wh o mi ssed the fin al th ere last May, th ere was never a fin er mile tra ck finish. Three rid ers hit the fini sh line side-by-side and as th e announcer I could not ca ll th e winner until I went tra ckside to th e winner 's circle a nd got th e results from th e officials. It was the clo sest fini sh I've ever seen. Two riders? Yes, ma ny times over th e years, but never th ree that close. San 'Jose breeds close fin ishes in mile finals. I can rea lly thi n k of only one that was not decided on the la st lap , last turn , or at th e finis h line. And that was way back in 19751 I recall one meeting a t San J ose whe n every race - hea ts, semis, tro phy race a nd fin al - was decided a t th e line, every o ne of th em ! No o the r tra ck can mak e an identical claim a nd .i t doesn 't happen very often . The next weekend finds the Camel . P ro circuit riders a t Ascot Park in Gardena for th e closing half m ile of th e year on Saturday, September 26. Yes, it's back to to night racing under th e lights and a fast, wide-open track, unlike the da ytime venture of last spring wh en th ey ran in the day for the ben efit of TV cameras . Asco t was built for n ight motorcycle ra cing and is th e longest runnin g National on the schedule. Like San Jose, Chandler is the winner here th e last two tim es o u t. Parker is a form er two-time winner a t Ascot and Graham has chalked up one win on th e fastest half mi le oval of the m all. Shober t comes up sho rt o n th is one as Asco t is one of the few d irt tra cks . he has never wo n o n, Bubba has some hi gh fini sh es there but has never been breathin g do wn the winner's neck wh en th e chec kered flag ca me out. Asco t will boast a recor d eigh t form er wi n ners of th e event when practice sta rts Sa tur day evening. (Continued to page 27)
