Randy Mamola showed dry-weather dominance for the first time this seasoh w ith his win at Misano; Mamola used a new construction Dunlop. Gardner (2) battled with Taira (21) over third place but eventually got the decision; Gardner has been on the rostrum in 10 of the 1 2 GPs. P.F. Chili (1 0 ) leads Freddie Spencer (19 ) and Didier de Radigues (7) in the race for sixth; Chili ran into Spencer causing them both to crash. fifth after a week in which he felt he never really got going and which also saw the Italian press report allegations about certain aspects of his personal life. The Australian added he felt th e Yamahas were better at Misano because the y were more stable and th e long corn er exits suited the Yamahas better than th e quickeraccelerating H o ndas. Although the Hondas make more power than the Yamahas, the power Isn 't th e sort that suits sixth-fastest Spe ncer 's riding style. "T he bike's producing so much power that it 's now important to co n tr o l the power," the three-time World Champion said. He continued by saying that the power comes on sooner than he would like, but also signs off sooner so th at he can't ride it in the familiar high-revving, back-sliding style he favor s. " I'm getting more a nd more used to th e way th e bike steers," he said. " Bu t I'm still loo king for th e edge." One thing that all of the top riders agreed on was that traffic would be a factor in th e ra ce's outcome. They also agree d that th ere were fa r too many rid ers allowed into th e field who were extremely dangerous and had no righ t to be there. The green light flashed and Lawson led the pack through the left right"at the end of the short front chute. He was followed by McElnea, Taira, Gardner, Chili, Mamola , and Spencer. T he Cagivas of Didier de Rad igues and Ra ymond Roche were eighth and ninth with Massimo Broccoli rounding out the top 10. Mamola was quickl y into second among th e leading quartet of Yamahas with Gardner already off th e pace in fifth.
