AMA Pro Twins Road Race Series: Round 9 Quarterly wins; Brauneck is champ By Farren Williams SONOMA, CA, AUG 30 Eagle Racing 's Bimota Ducatimounted Dale Quarterl y outlasted Ducati rider R ussell Pau lk and Dr. John 's MotoGuzzi -m ounted Doug Brauneck to top a fierce three-wa y battle in the G rand Pr ix Pro Twins division a t Sears Point International Raceway. Quarterly and Paulk fought it out for th e entire 40-mile, 16-lap main event. Paulk led mo st o f th e race, but Quarterl y passed Paulk in the Ca rousel (tu rn 6) on th e fin al lap, put a lapped rider betw een himself and Paulk, th en motored half a lap to victory. Bra uneck was ho t on the ir heel s, bu t elec ted to watch the ba ttl e fro m a close th ird to ensure his 1987 Pro T w ins Nati onal titl e, wh ic h he claimed with ease. Ada mo, who had a sli m. o utside cha nce of clai m ing the title, su ffered th rough a mi serabl e weekend. H e crashed in practi ce Satu rday, break ing hi s Team Leoni Du cati in half. Peter J ohnson, the new Mod ified Produ ction cha m pion, took th e win in the MOdified Producti on division , finishing eighth overall a board hi s Fast by Ferraci Cagiva. H e to p ped Yam ah a-mounted Mark " D u ke" Yarrow and Harl ey-Davidson rider Thomas Sharp. J ohnson had a race- lo ng battle with Yarrow a nd Harl ey-Davidson rider Allen Satterl ee. Sa tterlee led the Modified Prod uctio n class in laps . four through 12, finished a close second behind Johnson ,· but was disqualified by th e AMA for running ill ega l cylin de rs o n his H ar leyDavidson (they reported ly were aluminum instead of the required stock cast iron ). Brauneck was first off th e line when th e 18 GP riders left the start ing grid, but at th e end of lap one the order read Paulk, Brauneck a nd .Q ua rt er ly. Quarterl y quickly bumped Brauneck to third on lap two, then passed Paulk in th e Carousel on lap three. Paulk returned th e favor before th e lap was over, and the two riders began a fierce, high-speed battle. They traded th e lead for the rest of the race with Pa ulk holding the edge mos t o f the time and Q ua rt er ly running in front when it counted. Brauneck's easy ride in third was interruped bri efly by Adamo, bu t wh en the Team Leoni rider dro p ped o u t, the finishing order was set for th e top th ree positions. Longevity Racing ' s John Long, ridin g a Du cati, took fourth a nd a no ther Du cat i p il o t, John W ill iams , claimed fifth. Six th went to Yama ha rider Britt Turkington a nd seventh was cl aim ed b y factor y Harl e yDavidson dirt tracker Scott Parker, who wa s ri d i n g " L uc i fer's Hammer." The top positions read Sa tter lee, Yarrow a nd J ohnson until J ohnso n eased arou nd Yarrow o n lap II. Wh en Johnson went around Sa tterlee on lap 12, he set the fini sh in g orde r. AMAjEBC Brakes Supersport Series: Round 9 Polen (who else?) tops Supersport By Farren Williams SONOMA, CA, AUG 30 Texan Doug Po len paced himself for the firs t four laps of th e EBC Brakes Supersport final, passed T homas Stevens on la p five and powered aw ay on hi s Honda 600cc Hurricane to win th e 30-m ile, 12-lap race with a six-second margin o ver runner-up Stevens. Seventeen-year-old Donald J ack s, ridi ng for th e first tim e ever on Sears Point's tight, twisty 2.52-mile course, finished third. Rid er s o n H onda Hurri can es clai med the to p 17 positions a nd th ere were 23 H ondas in th e 37-ri der field. T he vic tory marked an a lmos t p erfect seaso n for Po len, who claimed the Supersport Ch ampionsh ip by winning eig h t o f th e nine rac es o n th e sched u le a nd finishing seco nd behind Stevens in th e one event he di d n' t win. "Every th ing went well fo r me th is yea r, " he sa id . " T h er e were n o p robl em s a nd th at's what it rakes to wi n a cha m pio ns hip. I kn ew I'd do well , but I didn 't kn ow how well. " Pol en sta rted th e weekend off by winn in g th e fir st Supersport qual ifying heat race wire-t o-wire o n Saturda y, clocking in at nin e minutes, 19.15 seconds [or a n averag e speed of 80.48 mph. Michael Graves fini shed seco n d and l a i n P er o rounded o u t the top three. R icky Orlando a nd Jim J ep sen co ll ided o n lap two wlflle running second a nd third, respectivel y, a nd bo th riders wen t down. Orlando was unhurt. but J epsen was transported to So no ma Vall ey H ospital with a brok en h ip. H e was listed in good conditio n. R ich ard Moore g ra bbed the holesho t in the second five-lap heat race but fell in turn 11, givi ng the point posi ti on to St evens. Moore was uninjured. Stevens wen t on to win over Jacks, who started the heat in 12th position on row three, a nd David Devean. Stevens ' winning tim e was nin e minut es, 30.4 9 seco nd's, for a n average speed of 78.88 mph. It was the youngster J acks who led th e field of 37 riders into turn one a t th e start o f the fin al , wi th Steven s in second, Polen third and Per o fourth . By lap two, Steven s a nd Polen were around Jacks. Stevens was setting a quick pace, turning lap times in th e o ne minute, 52-seco nd range, but Polen dipped into the 1:51s to reel him in. Stevens was suffering from rear shock problem s, which ca used hi s Honda's rear end to drift and cha tter in th e corners. " I got into a cou p le of real bad slides," he said. On lap three, Stevens was tra iled by Polen, Jacks, Devean a nd New Zealander Pero. Polen swu ng in side a nd mad e a diving pass under Steven s as the du o entered turn six on lap five. Steven s managed to stay with Pol en for a lap, but after th at it was a ll over. Pol en powered away, lea vin g Steven s to sett le for seco nd. J acks finish ed third. well beh ind Stevens, at th e expens e of Devean , who rode on J acks' rear fender for the ent ire race. Devean passed J acks o n the wh ite flag lap, but lost th ird wh en Jacks repassed o n the fin a l goaround. Devean sett led for fo urth a nd was foll ow ed hom e by Pero . " I starte d o ut with a good pace a nd stuc k with them for a while," said Pol en. " It 's a long race and you can' t go as hard as yo u can right off the ba t." " Do ug was reall y goi ng good today," sa id Stevens. " I was havi ng a littl e p roblem wi th m y shock. It' s bett er to fini sh than to throw it away.
