Charlie J orgen sen nabbed th e holeshot in the heat race and with stood som e heavy com petition fro m Ryan Land and Pearce. J orgensen dro p ped to third after La nd and Pearce made a back straigh t charge for the lead . La nd took the heat win over Pearce and J orgensen finis hed th ird. Doren Po tter and J oe Borda rou nd ed th e top five. J orgensen jumped the line for the main event and was sent to the penalty line for the restart. At th e green light, Pearce led Potter, La nd a nd J orgensen , then began to stretch his lead as th ey bat tled for second. Pearce took the easy victory wit h Potter second and J orgensen th ird . Land and Borda rounded o ut the top five. The 500cc Pro class saw Donnie and brother Tony H arrell battle for the lead after Donnie pulled th e holeshot. Ron Brown blew by both Harrellsd to claim the lead from third position, then raced peg-to-peg with Donnie Harrell for the lead. Bush ASPEN, CO , AUG. 9 Danny Walker took advantage of Steve Wands' off-track excursion a nd went on to win the 600cc Superb ike class in sprint race action at Woody Creek Ra cewa y. The 14th Ann ua l Asp en 6-Hour Enduran ce race was sched u led to ta ke pl ace th e day before, but a last minute cancella tio n forced th e riders to race in th e sprint program. . The 600cc Superbike race looked like a dead heat from start to fini sh as Walk er, Wands, Chuck Lee, and Deiter Lane ran their own race. Since Pueblo. Wands has found some ex tra horses and o u t-mo to red everyo ne down th e back stra ig h t. He seemed to hav e the race in hand as he wor ked aro u n d slowe r tra ff ic, lea vin g Walker , Lee, an d Lane to sett le secon d. But down th e back stra ig h t on lap eight hi s brakes were n' t qui te there and he shot across Gene Roybal's li ne into turn ni ne, al most taking ou t hi s front tire . Bo th riders ma intained con trol as Wands ra n off the track, saved it, and powered back o n th e track to salvage second place beh in d Walk er. In th e Formula One race antifreeze was spi t on the second lap and caused a major accident in tum three whic h bro ugh t o ut the red flag. Once the all-clear was give n, a resta rt was held a n d everyo ne was o ff a nd ru nnin g. Bikes were falli ng everywhere after an other bik e had spewed oi l all over th e trac k. With riders down and both ambula nces 'on the track, the red flag was th rown and the ra ce called. Ricky Orlando, John Hopperst ad , and Mike Mangham placed first, seco n d and third respectively. Open Superbike was another high speed war as Geoff Cesrnat, riding injured Jim Clark 's GSXRllOO. Mike Mangham and Greg Curtis found the track suitable for racing after an hour delay to clean up. Cesmat was all but flying his 1100 down the back straight. His shift po int into fifth gear was right on th e rise and fall halfway down th e straight, causing hi s front end to loft everytim e, bringing on spectacular wh eelies at over 100 mph. Cesm at finished well ah ead of Mangham and Curtis. T he Production races provided the ir usual share of good ra cing as Orl ando , Dan Turner, and Dan Elders too k 750 hon ors. In 600cc Production Wands used his horsepower an d brak es to hold off Wal ker and Ch uck Lee. Tarter collects Trialthalon victory By David Procida SAN BERNARDINO , CA, AUG. 8-9 Doublecross Ra cin g put on a mot orcycle Triathal on at Gl en H elen OHV Park , and the event co nsis ted of a 45 minute Grand Prix, a 20 minute motocross and a Sand Drag Elimina tio n o n th e 1/8 mile long sand pit. One of th e lar gest and most exciting classes this weekend was th e Vet No vice class, won by Mike T arter. When th e green flag fell to start off th e Grand Pr ix T arter grabbed the lead with Suzu ki-mounted Sam L upear and Cham pion Yamaha's Elliot Iverso n g lued to h is rear fender. Rounding out the top five positions were Wes Luki na a nd Mission Yama ha's Dal e Pi ckard . T he top five riders stayed bunched up for the first 15 minutes of the race wit h Lu pear o ver- ta ki ng Tarter, o nly to drop hi s RM in the whoops lead ing up to Animal Leap. Lupear was up quickl y but not before T arter, Iverson, Lukin a and Pi ckard slipped by, Ross Gregory was now riding Lupear's shadow and pressuring him for fifth place. Up front Tarter was holding off a hard charging Iverson while Lukina was being challenged by Pickard. Lupear was on the gas hard closing the gap between himself and Pickard and made h is pass on the following lap, placing him in fourth and righ t behind Lukina. Two laps later Lupear used an inside line to pass Lukina for third but as tim e ran out Tarter remained o ut front for the win with Iverson seco nd and Lupear third. In Sunday's mo tocro ss Iverson grabbed th e hol eshot wit h Lou is Sp ri nger and Racers Choice rider Anthon y Procida following. Tarter was moving up th rough the pack from a dead last"start. Staying with him was Pickar d, and by the end of la p two th ey were beh ind Lukina wh o was ru nni ng in fourth. Out in fro nt Iverson ra n and hid with the lead while T arter moved up to second . Pickard moved past Procida and a lap later displ aced Springer for th ird. Lupear moved up o n Pr ocida and he made an attem p t going into a corner on ly to have th e doo r shut hard on him. A lap later L upea r managed to power by, on ly to get passed back over a series of jumps. The checkered fla g flew for Iverson on the next lap with T arter, Pickard, Springer and Procida ro unding o ut the top five positions. In th e Sand Drag Eliminations all bikes of th e same cc's were pitted agains t each o ther . Eliminated in th e . first round were Iverson , Lupear and. Lukina in the 250cc class, while . Pickard lost in the 125s. T arter and Procida were the last remaining Vet riders and Tarter fell victim to a red light and Procida to ano ther rider. IYa m~ Taylor takes cash at LA County MX By Terry Rezek LANCASTER, CA, AUG. 9 Ri cky T aylor easily won the 250cc Pro class today in th e California Racin g Club Mot ocross at Los An geles County Raceway. Taylor, on a H onda and riding for Smith Goggles and Dirt Rider magazine, took th e moto one holeshot, followed by Jeff Reynolds, T om Engels and Ken Zahrt. T aylor was no t to be caught and Reynolds crashed ou t of th e race tryin g. Todd Campbell and Willy Mu sgrave moved up at the same tim e to second and third and fin ished th at way , leavin g Zah rt stuck in fourth. Zahrt was back with a bang in mo to two, taki ng th e holeshot and pu tting o n an aerial acrobatic show wh ile trying to stay ahead of the charging T aylor. The high alti tude lea p s took thei r LO ll a nd Zahn suddenly slowed in m idrace. He had twea ked h is throttle wrist on o ne of those jumps and co uld barely han g o n. Taylor took th e lead an d an easy w i n fo r first m on ey. Ca m pbell brought his KTM in for ano ther second. The 125cc Pro race was betw een Rich Truckinski and Eric Wicker. Truchinski (Answer/ Valley Honda7 Gramps) took both motos and the overa ll. The 500cc Pro event was eq ua ll y cut and dried, 'wi th Chris Radzinski tak ing both motos over Mik e McLain. . David Bagwell bagged both 500cc Intermediate rnotos and the overall: The big race was for second between David Rosen and Jeff Hares with Rosen having the early lead in both motos and Hares nipping him late in the race for second.
