Bob Nebel won th e semi pro heat
a nd ·finished third in th e fea ture
which was won by Blaha. Nebel had
engine problems wi th th ree differe nt
bikes.

Mini Cycles.and the n rode hi s mini
in th e 125cc Amateu r class whe re he
finished eighth in both th e hea t and
feature. This will be H eyden 's final
year in the Min i class a nd he is

Schwartz o u tdista nced the pack in
hi s hea t race but came hom e second
in the sem i to Mike Faria. Bo th riders
earn ed bert hs in the four lap main
event.
In the main, Schwartz and Faria
were join ed by Ga ry H icks and Tuff
McBride and af ter the start, th ey
found themse lves ru nning third and
four th . H icks a nd McBride ga ted
from th e two inside slo ts a nd they
took full adva nt age of the sit uation.
The action hea ted up as th e field
exited turn two o n the first circuit
wh en H icks and McBride almost
ca me toge ther a nd almos t collected
Schwartz. Schwartz backed off to .
avo id the problem a nd everyo ne got
through.
Sch wartz becam e tired of third a nd
weaved pas t McBride and H icks on
la p two. Faria wanted to go af ter th e
leader but it took him a no ther lap
to get past McBride. Faria didn 't have
enough time left a nd he had to wa tch
from seco nd as Sch wartz collected
another South Bay Stadi um checke red fl ag. T h ird spot w ent to
McBride.

seco nd by a half a bike.

Speedway and Bobb y Schwartz deposi ted the che ck in hi s pocket a t th e
end of th e racing ni ght.
Things didn't start out so well for
Schwartz on th e c ha m p io n sh i p
format program. In even t one , Mike
Fari a go t the ga te over Schwartz a nd
held him back for the duratio n.
" Show time" Bobby Ott gated fro m
the pole and wo n event two by seven
lengths o ver John Saridona. Phil
Co llins a nd Steve Lucero ledal l th e
way to win events th ree a nd four at
th e end of the first ro und.
Ott stayed perfect when he won
th e sixth hea t of the eveni ng. Event
eight match ed Fari a, Lucero a nd
Collins, a ll firs t round win ners,
aga inst Billy H a mil l. Lucero and
Co ll ins stag ed a fan tastic race as they
traded th e lead back and forth until
the fin al bend. Lucero got the dr ive
and mov ed a way an d Faria drove
under Collins a n d took seco nd.
Sch wartz ended the second ro und'
with a wire-to-wire win over Gary
H icks.
Lucero a nd Ott were -the o n ly
rid ers wh o were pe rfect afte r two
ro unds and th ey met in event 12 bu t
they were upstaged by Hicks. The
youngs ter took a big win foll owed

o n th e winning track by edging
Louis Kossu th in event 13 while
Schwartz wa ltzed to his second wi n
in a ro w in event 14.
After three ro unds Faria, Sch wartz
and O tt were all level on eig h t poin ts.
Ro und four feat ured Far ia and Ott
tanglin g in event 17. Brad Oxley a nd
Faria flew off th e line out O tt swep t
past both of th em in turn two on
th e ope ning lap. O tt rod e away while
Oxley held Faria at bay all th e way,
putting Faria ou t of the h unt. Wh en
Sch wartz took event )8, it set up a
last race showdown wit h Ott for the .
title and ex tra $1000.

Sch wartz was r ight behind him.
Sch wartz contin ually tried to sweep
by o n the outside but Ott held him
off. On th e la st la p Sch wart z go t a
drive and went between Ott and the
cras h wall a nd emerged with the lead
as they h it turn one for th e fina l time.
Sch wart z th en held Ott off to the
chec kere d flag a nd earned the $1000
bonus.

only close call was on the last corner
of the first lap when Millard misj udged and cu t in' too soon, almost
