Oster, Hart top Gold Cup opener By Clay Light 36 ALBANY , OR, AUG. 23 Steve Oster and Grayson Hart were winners in th e 125 and 250cc Pro classes at round o ne of th e Yam ah a Gold Cup Seri es held at Albany Supercro ss. Over 30 riders were o n h and , repres enting Oregon, Washington, Idaho, California and Canada. All three Pro classes were won by I-I sweeps . The first came from Oster wh o won the first 125cc Pro moto over Scott Steffy, H art, T ony Graves and Kenn y Losen . Moto two was much more exciting as H onda-mounted Brian Birkestol sto le th e lead at th e drop of th e gate with Brian Thomson and Oster close behind. Near last ' were Hart a nd Steffy. Oster moved past Birkestol on the fourth lap, leaving Birkestol to join a five rider swapfest for second which included Olsen, Larry Jackson , Thomson, Smail and Mike Bell . The motos first casualty was Miller Products sponsored Thom son , whose machine sounded bad by lap six. Bell was fastest through traffic, moving from a midpack start to . fourth. Bell nabbed Olsen and Jack- son to settle into second all by himself. Catching Oste r would be impossibl e since the Kawasaki rider had built up a 15 seco nd lead. Oster too k th e win with Bell , Ol sen , Steffy, Smail, Graves and Hart in tow. Hart shot out fron t of 18250cc Pros in the first rnoto, followed by Jack- . son and Steffy. After six laps, J ackson dropped back which moved Steffy into second with Sm ail , Ch apman and Nick Blasdell trailing. Blasdell, in hi s first Pro ra ce, passed Ch apman and Smail, but o nly for a lap. That 's when Chapman and Smail jo ined Steffy for a second pl ace battle, which went Steffy's wa y. The moto win, however, went to H art. Third was Smail over Blasdell , Graves, Dennis Sweeten and Dan Wolff. Chapman tim ed th e starting gate precisely for th e second moto and put his Honda out front of Steffy. Steffy got th e squeeze in tum one, went down and rem ounted in last. Chapman led Graves, Blasdell , Sma il and Jackson on lap one and left th e co m pe ti tio n well behind. His smooth riding helped him open up a huge lead by lap three. Ch apman, unaw ar e th at H art was wit h in striking range by th e midwa y point, . slowed, all owing Hart to take th e lead with four laps to go . Ch apman held o n for seco nd pl ace, but a first moto 10th placed him ou tside th e top five. T rail in g Ch apman was Blasdell , Graves a nd Smail. Results 125 PRO: 1. Steve Oster (Kaw); 2. A gruell ing 80-hour transcontinental driv e from Laguna Seca, Californ ia, to Nova Scotia 's Atlantic Motorsport Park paid ' off big for Yamaha Motor Canada's Superbike star Ru eben McMurter. After 25 ' minutes of hot work, th e London, Ontari o, based rider snagged his third Canad ian Motorcycle Association number one pl at e on his Shoei/ Dunlop/Treen Leathers Yamaha FZR750R in a victory measured by in ch es over Rothmans Honda rider Paul MacMillan, of Markham, Ontario, wh o set a lap record in th e closing stages of the ra ce. Although MacMillan 's Leitner & Bush Honda VFR750 started from th e pol e, McMurter led off th e line. On lap two, fiest y Quebec Yamaha rider T om Douglas plunged down the turn o ne sweeper on the outside of McMurter and bolted past him at _ the hairpin. Douglas lost the front end braking for the next turn and was lu cky to escape with just a broken big toe. The next 18 laps settled into a fierce contest between McMurter's Yamaha and MacMillan's hardbraking Honda. AMP 's 1.6 miles and . turns feature seven elevation changes and favor strong midrange and p lenty of ground clearance. MacMillan used all of his, ending the race with a bleeding foot and a new lap record of 1:14.03, but he could only hold off McMurter for a comer or two each time he took the lead. At the fina l co mer MacMillan barged past McMurter with all guns blazing, but McMurter squeaked past him . right at the finish line. The second annual CIOO New England/New Scotland Ma tch Race pitted Atlantic Canada's top six Middleweight Modified Production Experts against a strong team of Americans for a 25-lap dash. A $3000 purse awarded for the winning team , brought out the best in the visiting team. As in the 1986 race, Rothmans' Honda rider Johnny Ramsay set a scorching pace from start to finish , settting a lap record only 1.7 seconds off MacMillan's Superbike time, but it was Connecticut yankees Chris D'Aluisio, Bill Blythe and Gary D'Aluisio with Stephen Nogv eira of Massachusetts, filling second through fifth on th eir Honda Hurrican es, turning the tables on th e New Scotland team.
