NM A ru les sta te it is th e rid er 's resp onsibility to enter th e proper cla ss a nd to know his bike is legal for that class. T hroug ho u t Doug's letter he uses th e term shift lever which is th e sa me language his mechanic used with me. At no time did anyone ever mention the shifting linkage or mechanism was to be cha nged on his bike - only the words shift lever. His mechanic wa s told he co uld chan ge th e sh ift lever. He did not ask if he could a pply a brand new mechanism that cou ld en hance th e p erformance of the motorcycle. He never suggested that NMA inspect the modified produc t as it appeared on th e bike. The Ra ce T ech shift lever linkage mechanism a p p a ra tu s appears to be a fin e product as are many o ther prod ucts which are applicable to th e Modified · class. NMA encourages innovative " and new ideas. In th e Stock cla ss cham pions hi p run-off, Doug's bike was ro u tinely impounded by NMA o fficia ls a nd a t that time the shift ing mech anism ap para tus was observed. I quickl y brough t the problem to th e a ttentio n of th e Yamaha team. La rry Griffis, who heads up th e Yamah a su pport program (Do ug 's spo nso r) responded that he was una ware of a n y special sh i fti ng linkage o r a p p a ra t us on Doug ' s bike. Mr. Griffis and I in spected th e bike a nd at that time it was stat ed by M r., Griffis th at th e bike was not stock producti on. In regard to J erry Campbell , or anyone affilia ted with him or Ka wasa ki Motor Corp., there was never a t a ny time a protest lodged wi th NMA aga ins t Doug's bike. In a nswer to Doug's P.S., that hi s grips wer e n ot stock ei ther , we suggest th at you once and for all read the rules of NMA that we mai l to all mem bers a nd you will find th a t no where in o ur rules does it sta te tha t you can not change grips in the Stock class . I'd also like to rem ind you that our Pro classes are open to all ag es. TED MO O REWOO D Vice President Na tional Mo tospon Association Norwalk, CA Boo th a t the Orange County Fair. Inform ation regarding our efforts to defea t 57 was well received. Through th e co nt in u ing effort of Cycle News, On-Dirt Magazine, HiTorque Publishing a nd Petersen Publish ing we are becoming better informed a nd more resp onsive. As rep orted in Cycle News, th e recen t Ga llo co m m e rci a l de picti n g irresponsible off-readers was quickl y pulled because of th e immedi a te and very vocal protest fro m th e off-road community. N one of the a bo ve " j u s t happened." It was a united effort by many. If you do not belong to an organiza tion or club, give it some .though t. Sure, joining a group will in volv e a little work, but you 'll meet some gre at people, have a fun ti m e, a n d get to sh a re in th e sa tisfaction of advancing our sport. The re port said th at we had problems wi th system breakage a nd had changed ' sponsor compan ies as a result. On two occasions we did have problem s with break age due to unnecessary stre ss ca us ed by the rubber engine mounting system used on Suzuki GSXRs. This problem was on ly found under ex treme racing conditio ns. The representatives at . Kerker were n otified a nd immed ia tely solved th e problem. Unfor tunat ely, we were not able to receive shi pment of a new modified system in ti me for o ur next raci ng event, so we mad e the decisio n to use another brand ex ha ust system . We have since received the new Kerker systems and a re co mp letely sat isfied with perfor ma nce and results. Kerker has been a long-time sponsor of the Kayo Racing effo rt and we are committed to bein g a vital pan of their winning team. DAVID 1- ZUPAN T eam Captain The Human Race T eam Waukegan,lL Salty air memories I must say th at I enjoyed immensely th e Norton Manx review by Alan Cathcart in your August 5 issu e. It did, indeed, bring ·back a few salty air memories! True, Alan was revisiting Bill y Mathews' Daytona Manx, but some mention of Bobb y Hill a nd Bill Tuman, al ong with Dick Klarnfoth, would have been in order, their being part of th e. Norton wrecking crew, too . Alan (bei ng th e you nger lad that he is) glossed over a few points worth co m men ti ng on . For exa m ple, th e ru bber-covered foot pegs were an AMA safety req uirement, not a Beart " touch ." Alan 's com me nts regard in g th e 8: I co mp ression ra ti o n eed airi ng, too. Back " then" the AMA specified the com pression ratio an ohv (ohc) engine was allowed to run to keep th eir power o ut put in line wi th th e side valve engines of th e da y (the old 30 cubici nch over head valve versus the 45 cubic inch argument ). Ori ginall y, the AMA's allowab le co m p ressio n ratio was 7.5:1 and Francis had to tu ne carefu lly to ins ure proper running temperature for th e No rto ns o n th e o ld beach / ro a d co u rse.
