Defending World Champio n Eddie Lawson (Yam) finished second . 3.9 seconds behind fellow Californian Mamola. Australian Wayne Gardner (Hon) was third. J apanese riders Tadahiko Taira (Yam) and Shunji Yatus hiro (Hon) finished fourth and fifth. respective ly. Three-time World Champion Freddie Spencer (Hon) crashed and was knocked unconscious. Spencer spent the night in the hospital but was released the follow ing morning. With 12 of the 15 rounds of the World Championship Road R a ce Series completed. Gardner continues to lead the 500cc 'point standings with 145 points. Mamola is second with 124 and Lawson is third with 115. Off-road racers pre-running the Baja 1000 course should take care when crossing the highway at Valle de Trin idad on Saturday, September 19. ,Why? Anderson's death was due to complicating respiratory infections and came IS-months after he suffered brain damage in an accident which occured wh ile he was on an off-road ride in Baja, Mexico . Money donated to the Mark Anderson Rehabilitation Fund. which was to be held until Mark's insurance coverage ran out and rehabilitation theraphy began. will now be donated to the National Motorcycle Safety Fund, a charitable organization. A I Parke r, U.S. Suzuki VicePresident, Motorcycle Sales, has announced six major promotions. Larry Vandiver, the new Reta il Promotions Manager, will be responsible for implementing the Suzuki Retail Fina nce Program . Vandiver was Assistant National Sales Manager for t he past three years. Marty Hay nes has been named National Accessory Manager. Haynes was Suzuki's Dealer Development Manager. Mike logan has been promoted to Assistant National Sales Manager. logan was Eastern Regional Sales Manager. Bill Johnson is Suzuki 's 'n e w Dealer Development Manager. Johnson was Southern Regional Sales Manager and he will be replaced in -that position by Tom Decker who has spent seven years as a Suzuki District Sales Manager. Tim Buche is the new Eastern Reg ional Sales Manager. Buche spent three years as a Suzuki District Sales Manager. "U .S . Suzuki is very optimistic about sales potential in the 1988 marketplace," said Parker. "We have some well eng ineered a nd designed new products now arriving at the dealers, including the GSXR series road bikes, the 4 Wheel Drive and lT230E QuadRunners. These are just part of our lineup, and all are expected to be strong sellers, especially as they will be linked to the new Suzuki Retail Finance Program." The Sequoia Summer Series finale scheduled for Labor Day Weekend in California's Sequoia Na tional Forest has been postponed due to the , continued extreme fire danger in the area . The Forest Service has announced that Stage II restrictions for the area .wen t into effect on Monday, August 31. With the per sistent hot and dry weather, the restrictions have been imposed on virtually all of the Sequoia Forest. These restrictions strictly prohibit the use of vehicles and chainsaws, except on roads; prohibit all campfires. portable stoves, and barbecues. excep t in developed campgrounds; and prohibit' smoking, except in vehicles or developed recreat ion sites. The Sequoia Summer Series calls on volunteers to participate in trail maintenance sessions . The 1987 CMC Trans Cal MX Series, which is being sponsored by Dodge Trucks, kicks off at Glen ยท Helen Park in San Bernardino, California, on Sunday September 6 . Area , Dodge dealers will be giving away free t ickets to the race in conjunction with a Dakota test drive. "I think bikers are great. I want to become one. Malcolm is making me a biker." said Taylor . New York Daily News Photo. George B. "Bull" Ancell III , 63. died on August 24 in Wichita Falls, Texas. Ancell and his fathe r were copromoters of the Ancell Ranch Run In the 50s. and "Bull" was co-owner of the Wichita Falls Indian dea lership. His fami ly owned a 14,OOO-acre . ranch that riders enjoyed for many . years. Jordi Tarres (Bet) won the August 30 Czechoslovakian round of the World Championship Observed Tr ials Series. Thierry Michaud ' (Fa n) was second . Grand National Ch ampi on Bubba Shobert. one of the most successful dirt trackers in the history of AMA/ Camel P ro Series racing, finds himself in the un likely pos ition of looking for a spo nso r to fund his 1988 dirt track effort. America n Honda recently announced that the company will pull out of dirt track racing next year. leaving Shobert to contest the 1988 Dirt Track Series on his own. "I have clauses in my contract to receive eno ugh equipment from Honda to run my own program. but. I still need a major sponsor to help with my effort," Shobert said. "If Camel keeps their program the same, I'll probably just do the Camel Pro Series (dirt track) races next year. I'm experiencing the same thing everyone else ,is. When I go to a non-Camel race. I have to pay everything out of my own pocket and you can 't make any money . T he . only reason I would do it (race nonCamel events in 1988) is to brea k records. But if there's no point fun d I for those races. it's just not worth it . I don 't want to spend everything I've made in the last couple of years trying to break records ." Shobert I remains under full contract with Honda to ride in 1988 Camel Pro Series road races. Two-time National Superbike Champion Wes Cooley will ride the Team Suzuki entry in the WERA Willow Springs (California) 24-Hour Endurance Race on September 5-6 . Cooley, who was seriously injured at Sears Point International Raceway in May of 1985, will join Thomas Stevens, Russ Paulk and Jeff James on the factory Suzuki GSXR1100. Cooley, who won his two National Championships on Suzukis, is taking the injured Mike Harth's place on the team.
