Burge bombs Action
Park East Speedway
By Todd Kr oh
GREENE, NY, AUG. 15
Tom Burge has qual ified for every
Ha ndicap ma in event in 1987, but
ha s never crossed th e finish line in
th e lead. This week he changed all
th at by ta ki ng the H andicap win at
Action Park Eas t Speedway, while
Warren Diem co ntin ued his a mazing
trek to th e Scratch racing consecu tive
record.
Burge rolled out for th e first semi
facing nemesis Diem, and seem ingly
had th e win in hi s hip pocket until
Diem made a last-lap effort to take
the lead. Mike Cortese put his
Godden in front at the start , with
Lance Darsow a nd Burge in tow . O n
lap three Burge passed both Darsow
and Cortese. H e had a good lead but
was ca ugh t and passed by Diem on
the final circuit.
The second semi had Floyd Clark,
Damien Cornwell and Mike Buman
in th e first three positions for the
entire race. Clark made the transfer
to his fir st Handicap main , going
wire-to-wire from the zero -yard line.
Clark assumed the lead in the main
event for the first two laps before
diving into tum three too fast and
sliding through tum four on his
leathers. Cornwell, Burge and Watson went underneath th e sliding
Clark, while Buman and Diem got
hung up. It was a three-man show
for the final laps, and as they came
out of turn four the final time it was
three abreas t at th e ch eckered nag.
The win went 10 Burge who finished
