The Scra tch main had been close ost of the way but th e Handicap ain was quite d ifferent. After a red ag, due to a cras h on la p two , ecessita ted a restart, th e race was all ary H icks. Walt Farnum was leading th e vent wh en he went down on lap two nd forced a number of rid ers to lay it down. Wh en th e event was resarted Farnum was off th e pe nalty ine while Hi cks blasted off th e short ardag e a head of Mik e Curoso a nd uff McBride. Cu roso lasted in second until he ifted wid e o n th e second lap. H e at freight trained with McBr ide dvancin g to second and Schwartz to hird. McBride and Schwartz had im hopes of chasing Hi cks down ut those hopes totall y vanished on ap four wh en Hicks and th e Quaker tate/Milne Brothers/S'Tf'/ Flan ds/K&N Weslake ran away. H icks cruised across th e line with ne of the widest margins of victory hat any rider has had at Costa Mesa in 1987. McBride looked to have nd secured but th e wile y Schwartz ta r red charging and may have ugh t the New York native naping. J immy Gentile (Wes). chwartz wins again t Ascot Speedway By Scott Daloisio ARD ENA, CA, AU G . 13 or the 14th ti me th is year, Bobby chwartz, th e Na tional Speedway hampio n , won the Scratch main at Chris Agajanian 's Ascot South Bay Stadium, That is 14 wins in 17 o utings for th e veteran rider who returned to th e U.S. for th e 1987 season aft er a su ccessful ca reer in the Bri tish League. . Schwa rtz was sh ining throughout his Scratch rides o n T h ursday a nd by th e tim e he reach ed the four lap main , he had already beaten th e lik es of Ph il Co lli ns, Brad Oxley a nd Bobby Ou. Wh en th e main ro lled around he looked almos t unstop pable. Schwartz flew out of th e number one sta rti ng spo t o n th e Budweiser/ C.T .I. Brace/ Silk ol en e/Cirell o Racin g/Bell Wesla ke and ass umed the lead. Ott was second out with Co lli ns third. Collins qu ickl y found a route to ge t past Ott for th e second spot a nd he went a fter th e leader. Collins tri ed to dri ve past Sch wart z go ing down th e back straig h t on lap one but th e rider with th e n umber o ne o n hi s back beat him to the thi rd turn. Co lli ns stayed close a nd sta lked Schwartz all the way but he didn 't hav e quite enough to get past h is fann er Bri tish League teamma te. Schwartz to ok th e Roy Kettin g checke red flag and th e win n in g paych eck as well. Co ll ins ended up second followed by Ott and Oxley. Bef ore Thursd a y' s Handi cap mam, offi cial s moved J ay Gi aneui from th e 10 to th e 20-ya rd line. They made th e decision after th e tal ented rider had destroyed th e com petition in hi s first three rid es of th e evening. With Gianetti 10 yards ahead of th e com pe titio n, he had a distinct adva n tage for th e main. That ad vantage was wiped out by the sp ectacul ar sta rts of Bart Bast and Lou is Kossuth. Off the 30, they both were by Gianetti and having their own battle for first by the time th ey were in turn two . As the first circuit came to an end, Kossuth nudged the N JKI Arai / Smith Goggles Jawa into the point position. . Kossuth had th e lead but Bast wou ldn't let him rest for an instant. Bast stayed glued to his rear tire and looked for a way to th e cov eted point position. Bast gave a strong look inside on lap five and one lap la ter he tried to shoot under the lead er as th ey exited the fourth turn, bu t Kossuth shu t the door. Bast stayed ho t o n Kossu th 's rear tire but he cou ldn't get by and he had to settle for second at the finis h. Results SCRATCH: 1. Bobby Schwa nz (Wes); 2. Phil Coll ins (Wos); 3. Gary Hicks (3) leads Shawn McConnell Keith Larsen and Brad Oxley at Costa Mesa. Hicks led from start to finish . Berry Stork cash in ilt Biiungs Arenacross By Mary Hanson BILLINGS, MT. AUG. 12 Lee Vern Berry and Bill Stork were the big mone y wi nners toda y in th e Bill in gs Mo torcycl e Club's th ir d a nn ual are na cross. Berry won th e 125 a nd 250cc main and-finish ed seco nd in the O pen main to Stork in th e . a fte rnoo n races. In th e eve ni ng main s Stork took th e top spot in th e 125 a nd 250cc classes a nd finished second to Berry in th e O pen class. As t he afte rnoo n 125cc m ain cla mored into th e first turn Berry was the first to break away clean and tak e over the lead with Brad Peak e a nd Stor k jetting after him. Peak e folded a nd Stork ri pped by to pursu e Berr y, and Peak e pro ved to be no match .Ior T om Peters either. Peak e was able to h old o n to hi s fourth pl ace position , to fini sh behind Berry, Stork and Peters. Berry stomped hi s way into th e lead of th e 250cc main with Peters, Sto rk a n d Cu rt ' H yd e bu stling behind. Stork mad e a mi stake a nd fell back in to fifth , th en began battl in g hi s wa y back up to th e fro nt. Getting by Ron Camp a nd Joe Walter was no problem but Peters was and Stork finished third behind Berry a nd Peters. Berry once again shot into th e lead in th e Open class , with Stork and Cory Ranck directly behind. Lapped riders becam e a problem and Stork was better able to manuever his way around them and went on to finish in first. A disappointed Berry finished second, ahead of Rari ck. . In the evening program Stork took the early lead in the l25cc class with Berry and Rader hammering behind while th e rest of the pack was piled up in the first tu rn. Stork and Berry remained very close during the whole moto but Berry was never ab le to get around Stork. Rader fell back to the fourth place position, behind Rob y O tL Shannon Chamberl ain , Berry and Stork thundered ou t of the ga te and into the firs t tu rn in the 250cc main. Berry wen t down, Stork too k over seco nd and Curt H yde slid into third. While Berry tried to make a comeback Stork took over first, O tt second and Chamberlain fell back to third. H yde took th ird fro m Chamberlain, then went off th e track. Ber ry did manage to work h is way back up a nd settled for third beh ind Stork and OtL Stork captured th e holeshot in th e Open cl a ss a n d wa s bein g pursu ed by Ch amberl ain , Berry and R arick. Stork a nd Berry battled fiercely for th e top position, a nd near th e end Berry mad e hi s pass o n Stor k go ing over th e tabletop to ta ke the victory. Results AFTERNOON 80 : 1. Will ie Nash; 2. Bostrom won despi te heavy pressure from John Hl ebo a nd Frank . Nye, former tuner on Steve Eklund's championship winning Harl eys. Hl ebo made a mov e to pa ss Nye and did a flying W while N ye held second over Yarrow. Andy Tressor finished fourth o ver H lebo. J eff Gabhart won th e 60cc Mini class after a heat race get-off. David Banks wa s second over Eric Bostrom. Jake Keeny topped the Pee Wees over Lance Arnold and J esse Dawson. Jake Zem ki didn 't get a good start in the 80cc class but rode to the front, Steve H lebo led for the first half but had his wheels cross in the wrong place and cras hed while his brother, John Jr., too k second behind Zemke and in fro nt of Tory Bostro m. . Craig. Porter won the 250cc class chased by Paul Turpin o n a Yamaha Cou ntry 125. Ar mando Alvernaz wo n the 500cc Novice class o n his Yamaha and was chased ho me by Tracy Dawso n and Wa lly Blaskey after Britt DeSh ields bailed again. Turpin picked u p his second tro phy of the da y wit h a fourth with Elmira Alvernaz fifth over Al Bacon a nd Tory Bostrom. 41
