N ick e rson brought hi s BSA-tanked/Triumph pow ered sled back to wi n th e 750cc Pro Twin heat race, but could n' t repeat in the main, losin g to Greg Triber (T riI. . Fay was unstoppable in th e 12 rid er 250cc P ro A main event. In hi s first ride in the northwest since the Peoria 1'1' Nat ional, Fay ca me to the potato sta te to sh ow the local s just how fast he really is. The com pe tition go t a go od view of Fay's rear wheela s he slid to victory over Yamamoto and J oey Kopp. T he best was saved for last in the form of the m ost talented field of r iders si nce last yea r 's ha lf m il e. Seven of the riders in th e main were AMA Exper ts, who were on hand for the ne xt da y's Coor s Classic H alf Mil e. Fay prevailed in this race too . Blaha blasts lake Geneva MX By Jack Biddison LAKE G EN EVA, WI, AU G 21 Jeff Blaha had no tro uble in handling th e 125cc Ama teur class to score top point honors in th e Su zuki Motocross Championship Race Series ill Lake Geneva Raceway. Blaha finis hed seco nd in the heat and won the feature, win ning a single overall point battle wi th J eff Melc her who ' won the heat a ndfi nished second in the fea tu re. Blah a a lso won ' th e feat ure in the Semi Pro I25cc class .. Point lead er Don Gray j um ped into the lead a t the sta rt of the 125cc Amateur fea tu re and ha d a good lead o ver Bl ah a , Melc h er and L yle Wh eeler. G ray slipped a nd fell after th e firs t lap , ga thered it u p a nd co nt in ued but also wen t down on th e third lap: H e recovered to finish six th beh ind J eff Michaud a nd J eff Way. Bob Nebel won th e semi pro heat a nd ·finished third in th e fea ture which was won by Blaha. Nebel had engine problems wi th th ree differe nt bikes. Jim H eyden swe pt the Ama teur Mini Cycles.and the n rode hi s mini in th e 125cc Amateu r class whe re he finished eighth in both th e hea t and feature. Schwartz rolls to Ascot Speedway win By Scott Daloisio GARD EN A, CA, AU G. 20 T he Bobb y Schwartz show cont in ued to ro ll along at Chris Agajania n' s Ascot So ut h Bay Stadium , wh en he won his fourth Scra tch main in a row a t the tra ck. Schwartz o u tdista nced the pack in hi s hea t race but came hom e second in the sem i to Mike Faria. Bo th riders earn ed bert hs in the four lap main event. In the main, Schwartz and Faria were join ed by Ga ry H icks and Tuff McBride and af ter the start, th ey found themse lves ru nning third and four th . H icks a nd McBride ga ted from th e two inside slo ts a nd they took full adva nt age of the sit uation. The action hea ted up as th e field exited turn two o n the first circuit wh en H icks and McBride almost ca me toge ther a nd almos t collected Schwartz. Schwartz backed off to . avo id the problem a nd everyo ne got through. Sch wartz becam e tired of third a nd weaved pas t McBride and H icks on la p two. Faria wanted to go af ter th e leader but it took him a no ther lap to get past McBride. Faria didn 't have enough time left a nd he had to wa tch from seco nd as Sch wartz collected another South Bay Stadi um checke red fl ag. T h ird spot w ent to McBride. Fro m that poin t on it was just a matter of how far he was go ing to win by. Bill y 'H am il! and Keith Larsen a lso m ov ed by Gian etti o n th e open ing circui t for the second and third spots. Lou is Kossu th to o k Larsen for th ird on lap three with Faria getting by Larsen for third a t the ha lfwa y point. Faria kep t his cha rge up a nd went ou tsid e Kossu th a t th e end of the fifth lap for third, th en closed in o n H a m ill. Schwartz swoops IMS Speedway victory By Scott D aloisio SAN BER NARDI NO, CA, AUG. 19 The Seven-Up Bottling Co mpany put up a n ex tra $1000 to the win ner of the 7-Up Chall enge at J o h n La Dou ceur' s In land Motorcyc le Speedway and Bobb y Schwartz deposi ted the che ck in hi s pocket a t th e end of th e racing ni ght. Things didn't start out so well for Schwartz on th e c ha m p io n sh i p format program. In even t one , Mike Fari a go t the ga te over Schwartz a nd held him back for the duratio n. " Show time" Bobby Ott gated fro m the pole and wo n event two by seven lengths o ver John Saridona. Phil Co llins a nd Steve Lucero ledal l th e way to win events th ree a nd four at th e end of the first ro und. Ott stayed perfect when he won th e sixth hea t of the eveni ng. Event eight match ed Fari a, Lucero a nd Collins, a ll firs t round win ners, aga inst Billy H a mil l. Lucero and Co ll ins stag ed a fan tastic race as they traded th e lead back and forth until the fin al bend. Lucero got the dr ive and mov ed a way an d Faria drove under Collins a n d took seco nd. Sch wartz ended the second ro und' with a wire-to-wire win over Gary H icks. Lucero a nd Ott were -the o n ly rid ers wh o were pe rfect afte r two ro unds and th ey met in event 12 bu t they were upstaged by Hicks. The youngs ter took a big win foll owed .by O tt a nd L ucero. Faria go t back o n th e winning track by edging Louis Kossu th in event 13 while Schwartz wa ltzed to his second wi n in a ro w in event 14. After three ro unds Faria, Sch wartz and O tt were all level on eig h t poin ts. Ro und four feat ured Far ia and Ott tanglin g in event 17. Brad Oxley a nd Faria flew off th e line out O tt swep t past both of th em in turn two on th e ope ning lap. O tt rod e away while Oxley held Faria at bay all th e way, putting Faria ou t of the h unt. Wh en Sch wartz took event )8, it set up a last race showdown wit h Ott for the . title and ex tra $1000. Ott go t the ga te in th e final and Sch wartz was r ight behind him. Sch wartz contin ually tried to sweep by o n the outside but Ott held him off. On th e la st la p Sch wart z go t a drive and went between Ott and the cras h wall a nd emerged with the lead as they h it turn one for th e fina l time. MillardjErnshaw win Shannonville Sidecar By Paul Knoll SHANNONV ILLE, ONTARIO , CANA DA, AUG. 16 J eff Millard a nd Steve Ernshaw of Mich igan , on their -O n tario Cyclesp onsor ed Yam ah a TZ7 50 powered rig won over a field of 17 sid ecars from the U.S. a nd Can ad a for th eir third victor y in three sidecar racin g actio n series events . Their win s a t Mosp ort, On tar io, and San Air , Q ueb ec, mak e them the team to bea t ' with three ro unds remain ing and a 20-point lead. Their only close call was on the last corner of the first lap when Millard misj udged and cu t in' too soon, almost flipping th e ri g. They surv ived and wo n by four seconds. _ Seco nd p lace went to th e curre nt nu m ber one p late holders J oh n a nd Art Dailey from T oronto , Canada , o n th eir Motorcycle City Suzukisponsored Yamaha TZ7 50. They were swa pping p la ces throughout the race with the Vancouver, B.C., team of Phil Rooney and J erry Alley on th eir 11 50 Suzuki. T he Dail ey brothers made a great pass on th e last lap a nd held on to the flag. Bob Lovick a nd N ick FaIcos also of Vancouve r, pu t in an excep tio na l ride to fin ish fourth after breaking 39
