off Vance' s seco nd fastest ru n of a ll time for a Pro Stock bike, an 8.094 (Vance holds the record at 8.092), to Mafa ro 's very good 8. 16. T he dista nce separating th e two machi nes a t the finish line was less th an half a wheel. . Actually, all eyes were on Mafaro even before th a t win. By the end of the second and las t session o n Satu rda y, th e Saddlebrook, New Jersey, reside nt was in th e number one qualify ing posi tio n wi th an 8.30. The da y's h o t weather (w hich p ushed the corrected a ltitude readmgs up to almost 3000 feet) and strong headwind affected the performance of the bi kes to the point that su bstandard times came up on the boa rds for all th e riders. After a storm and cool front passed through on Sa tu rday n igh t, dropping the corrected altitude to around 800 feet and bringing with it a tailwind, the times improved markedly. Schultz began the first round by dropping Dave Catalano with his best shot of the meet, an 8.13 to Catalano's troub led 8.7 7. Mea nwhile, Vance had a race on his hands wi th Jim Beatty. He was la te on the ligh ts, got out of the groove, used body engl ish to correct, and th en powered by Bea tty before the ligh ts for the win. Furthermore, the Vance & Hines team were lean on the jetting of the carbs, which caused the motor to bog at the green. •Mafaro took the only bye of the day and ran an 8.24, due to some experimenting wi th a new Goodyear tire. In th e seco nd round. . Mafaro a djusted th e rea r wheel for the newness of th e tire a nd ripped off a n 8. 18 to down Lou Cuviello, who was no ma tch with an 8.50. Schultz established h is consisten cy streak with an 8.14 vic tory over R ick G ero in ro und two. After the shocker between Vance and Mafa ro took, place, Schultz and Russ Olms tead go t set to square off. . O lmstead has esta bl ished a reputation as a gutty competitor lately. For one thing, his Suzuki was b uilt in 1979 and has a motor of the twovalve design, as opposed to the fourva lver of all the newer Suzukis. For another thing, O lmstead still uses the smaller Goodyear road racing tire, while all of his fellow competitors have switched over to the new, larger Goodyears. It 's a credi t to him as a rider and tuner that he turns the numbers he does with his present equipment. Although he gave it a good fight, h is 8.20 came up short against Schultz's stronger 8.13. It might have been a closer final than it was if Mafaro h ad come up with a final-round ET closer to hIS semi-final n u m ber. He didn't give the motor enough throttle before letti ng the cl utch out and th e bike sp u ttered after lea ving the line. He admitted the mental error was a res u lt o f co ncentrating on the lig h ts. Schultz cal mly h it a .5 17 ligh t and ran his fourth eight- teen of th e day , an 8. 15. Ind ica tive of th e horsepower Schu ltz was making was the fact that he reset top speed of the meet fou r tim es during the weekend. Who can catch a Kawasaki? There are about ha lf a dozen Suz uki riders out there who wo u ld like to answer that q uestion.
