Arena best at Saylands MX By Mike Va ncil FRE MONT, CA, AUG. 7 Matt Arena turned his firs t ride on a Honda into a victo ry in the P ro class tonig ht a t Baylands Racewa y Park. After a get-off in the first mot o, Arena cam e back to win the second a nd claim the overall. In the first rn o to the leader was G a ry Rabe a nd he was smooth throughout the race a nd never once over-extended h i m sel f. Are na, aboard his ' new H onda ca me o u t tryi ng perhaps a tad too hard. A quart er way through th e moto Arena fell and was o u t of posit io n 10 catch Rabe, trai li ng by a considerable di stance to ge t a seco nd pl ace finish . In th e seco n d m o to Arena did nothing wrong. H e finish ed well ahead of Rabe and hi s 2-1 fin ish was better then th e 1-2 accom plis h men t of Rab e. It was no t long af ter the seco nd Expert/ Professional class moto th at a power fail ure took half of the Baylan ds' li ghting. Repair s co uld no t be accomplished at tha t ho ur so all classes o the r than th e P ro class were scored o n th e basis of the first mo ta result. Chall en ge, but th e hometown Yan kees got the best of th em during a ni ght which included bl own en gines, broken bones, a nd close raci ng. Before the cha lle nge got underway the weekly H a ndicap ra ces were run and there was a noticeable absen ce of Warren Diem , the Eas t's mos t dom inating ri der. Diem was slated to be captain of the US team a nd a favorite for the H andicap win, but du ring a pre-race warmup of his Godden machine th e mo tor let go . J oel Mo nell, cana dian Len Dillon, J ohn Lewis and Pat Cliff took wins in the hea t races. T he first semi was bad news for Bru ce "The Mongoose" Nelson w hen Mo nell dropped it in turn four and left Lewis and Nelson no cha nce to lay it down. Nel son en de d th e night wit h a bro ken foot. Canada's J ohn Kehoe beat Mike Cortese and Lewi s 10 th e fin ish after the resta rt. The second semi va ulted Tom .Burge, Lance Darso w and Dillon 10 th e main . Co rtese took the lead in th e main event bu t was hugged tightly by Darsow. " The Col orado Cowboy" dropped Cortese 10 second o n la p three. Mea nw hile Dill on, the Ca nad ia n National Champi on, quietl y m o ved into th ird p lace. Da rso w appeared to have the lead in hand un til the whi te flag lap whe n Dillon surged from thi rd 10 first a nd Di llon had to sett le for seco nd . The Can-Am challenge allowed each mem ber of th e 10 rid er teams to ride fo ur tim es. Scoring was do ne on a 3-2-1-0 basis for eac h race. The Ca nadians looked good after two heats as Keh oe took race one a nd Ca lifornian Walt Farnum , su bstitu tin g o n th e Canad ian team for Fred LeGau lt who cou ldn 't ma ke the trek fro m Can ada , took race two. Dill on ca p tured heat th ree to keep th e score tied, a nd Pat Cli ff brok e the ice for th e Americans in the fourth hea l. In th e fina l race of the first segment Dam ien Cornwell and Cortese pro - . vided the o ne-two p u nch th at pu t th e America ns o n top 18-1 2. Dillon, who was on a ho t streak, grabbed race eig ht, whi le Darsow a nd Cornwell scored five po ints in race nin e. Darso w, Lewis a nd Burge helped w;den that lead by winning three of the next five heats, leaving the other two to Dill on a nd Farnum. With five races to go the U A had for all p urpos es put it o ut of reach as they led 53-36, and in the fin al ro u nd o n ly Farnum co u ld muster a win for Canad a. The co urse, la yed o u t by observed trials riders Dan Logan and Barret Brown , lSDE veteran, was 107 mi les a nd a t least seven hours of very tight go ing. Deep ru ts, la rge logs, rocky creeks, and virgin woods were some of the hi gh lights. Most of th e expe rts though t it great fun. " I go t my money's worth ," claimed G lenn, " bu t a t least we had pl enty of time at the chec ks to catch o ur breath." It was a good thing, th e hot weather a nd the long hOUTS in the saddle took its tol l. The fun tooka down swing when so me course markings were accidently removed in the last section. Ma ny ri ders got lost a nd th e last check was thrown o ut as a result. Dean Autrey (61 AI finished second behind Jim Perry in the Pro-Am main event at the Castle Rock TT. A close battl e in Cl ass 30 Expert 'en ded whe n Ma rk Rupl e edged Chuck Steah ly by three seconds. Sad ler rode a single ra ther th a n th e 750 cc H arl eyDavidson most o ld timers remem ber h im aboard. J im Perry rode 10 a smooth 1-1 finish as he handled th e P ro -Am cla ss ahead of Dea n Autrey, T ony Dickinson and T roy Yeo. Dan Kirk got the scra tch in th e Over 40 hea t ra ce whi le Sad ler was getti ng u sed to the tra ck . L ee T hom pson followed close beh ind, but it di dn 't take long for Sad ler to begin pres suri ng Kirk. Their battle soo n put 40 yards o n Tho mpson. Sadler was wi thin 10 yards of Kirk wh en the chec kered flag came ou t, a nd Thom pson too k third. In the main event, Sadler go t the scratch followed by Kirk, Thompson a nd Doug Phelps.
