H a y rode his Honda to sweep the 250cc Amateur class a nd beat Terry Ha hn (Ya maha) in both the heat a nd feature. John B1ickel was third in both the heat a nd feature, while Eriks Ezerins, pulled a founh in the heat bu t managed o n ly a seven th in th e feature. Amon Do ll was fifth in th e heat and fourth in the feature as J eff Wav took fifth in the feature. B'lickel started the hea t race in from with H a y in hot pursu it. Wh en Hay shot by, B1ickel stayed close a nd soon found he had a cha llenge for th e spo t from Hahn wh o used a sq ueeze p lay LO move in for the run ner-up spot. Ha y led every lap of th e featur e. J eff Melch er (Suzu ki) sco red a swee p of the 125cc Amateur even ts, In both the heat and feature, Melch er came from far back to win on the final laps. Newcomer to th e Ra ceway actio n, J amie Abbott, took a spill in the 125cc Pro sem i heat, while riding second and was a DNF for the night. Harold Wik el had hi s ma chine stall , and he recovered to finish second. He roared back LO win the feature. Perdue wins Virginia State Fairgrounds ST By Joe Kelly RICHMOND , VA, J ULY 29 T he racing at the Virgi ni a State Fai rgrounds in Richmo nd last Wednesda y was the best of the season. Riders were in competition from New Yo rk , Pen nsylva n ia , North Carolina and Virgin ia. Raben Lewis came back fro m North Carolina LO attem p t h is doubl e w ins of th e previous week. It was not LO be. The first 250cc heat was very close . Chris Rickman , rid ing a ' Yamaha, led fro m the line, Lewis and Kawasaki rider, J erry Koris, were all over him. On the founh circui t ' Lewis went down bringing o ut th e red a nd checke re d fl ag. Ri ckm an was declared the winner. Rickman led the first la p of th e seco nd heat, but Lewi s used th e outside to work by and tak e th e lead . Rickman a nd Kar is bo th gave a stro ng run, but co uld not ge t around the Carolina rider. Rickman got th e holesh ot in th e main. Lewi s and he battled as one for se ve n laps. Then Rickman ' bobbled going into th e number one turn giving Lewis th e ope n ing he needed. Jerry Kor is a n d Hondamounted Jay Willliams, were two bike len~ths back battling hard for third. R ickman did everthing in his efforts to get back by Lewi s, but th e Camel Pro contender covered hi s space well to take the victory. As they came for the £lag, off the fourth turn , Williams made all hi s horsepower work to get by Karis for third. The 500cc class was th e crowd pl easer of th e night. J oey Perdue, the on ly ride r that has been in fairgo und's competition every year since racing started the re in 1972, came o ut of semi-retirem ent. He a p pea red a litt le rusty in th e first q ual ifier. Rickman rode his Ka wasa ki to the fro nt, holding off Clayton Ol iver. Ol iver appeared to be quicker in the earl y goi ng, but th e wh ole field was so close th ere was little room to get by. Perdu e wor ked the field, methodica lly, gaini ng second at the flag. T h e second h eat sho we d th e Perdue of o ld, as he shot to the fro nt. He di d not have a n easy ti me of it. Oliver did a good job in taki ng th e front po siti on. Rickman , Perdue and Lewis battled furi ously, but Ol iver kept first . On th e sevent h lap O liver slipped giving Perdue and Rickman th e o p po rt u n i ty th ey needed. On th e eig h th lap Lewi s moved by for th ird. G reg Triber and Gl en Nickerson finished 1-2 in th e Twins class , which was all . 750cc machines and all Triumphs, with th e excep tion of one Harley-Da vidson. Third in th e T wins class was Gary Hite, while Expert Darrell Triber was fourth ahead of Mik e Allen. Expert Tim Stu lts (H onda) posted a no ther impressive win a fter domin ating the 600cc Expe rt cla ss. Stults got revenge for a loss th e previous night, beatin g Ru ss Ya m a mo to (H o nda) . The du o staged a bru tal battle, but in th e end , Stu lts prevailed. Rich H ayman (H onda) fin ished thi rd with Cor ky J urkovich and rnotocrosser Pat Stults rounding o ut th e top five. Gammon BLOUNTVILLE, T N, J ULY 26 The th ird a nn ua l Volu nteer State Motocross Champi o n sh ip , sponsor ed by WQUT FM Radio a nd hosted by Muddy Creek Motocross, saw Fred Andrews go hom e th e big winn er with five Pro moto wi ns. Pro riders from 12 states were on th e lin e as the I 25cc P ro class blasted off th e lin e. Mike J on es, on his Ba rr 's Com petition Ya maha, pulled th e ho lesh ot followed by Ma rk Musselman a nd Gera ld Wood . Musselman fell o n lap o ne a nd Wood move d to second followed by Aaron Bollinger, wh ile Andrews cha rged through the pac k from a 10th p lace sta n. By the end of lap two, Andrews was in fourth a nd o ne lap lat er, he was in second. Andrews paced J o nes for three laps before he found the line to tak e th e lead. Bollinger was also on the move a nd went to second, but o n the last lap, J ones cha rged back to claim the spo t behind Andrews.
