Everything wa s going so well and we though t we had it won. I guess we just have to laugh and say th at 's racing, and thank God it did it on the dry lake and not out in the middle of nowhere." " It was fun , but it was rough, " said teammate Norman. "You definitely got a good workout. We were just trying to keep a steady pace going the whole time and the race was going well. O h well , what ca n you do?" With the Honda team out of the run ning and the nearest competition al most 15 minutes behind, Moen and Walker slowed the pace and conce ntrated on getting the KTM safely across the finis h line. Walker took the checkered flag just befor e 10:00 a.m., giving the team a four-hour time for the 240-mile race, an average speed of 60 mph and an IS-mi nute lead over second place. "The co urse was really fast, " said Wa lker , whose team effort was sponsored by Danny's Machine Works, ·KSI, Jerry McDaniel and KTM America. " I like it slower and rougher myself, but the bike worked well and went th e distance, so we can't complain. " Second overall and fir st in the 250cc division went to the Ph il Means/James Tucker CR250 duo, who were backed by Parker Motor Honda / Answer -P r o d u c ts/ C i rcl e Industri es /HT Ra cing/Means Machines. . "We go t up to third and just held it there all day , and with th e Honda dropping out we had second," said Tucker. " T he course wa s like Baja - built for the-cars-and-reall y fast.... " We threw this toge the r at th e last minu te," said tea mmate Means . " I was supposed to ride with m y brother bu t he couldn 't ma ke it.
