Dear Mr. Gallo
I was pl eased to hear fro m Ms.
Millie Roberson that Bartles and J aymes is sensitive to the situation facing a ll -terrain vehicles (ATVs) and
mo torcycle users and is willing to
rem ove yo ur commerical from fu ture
b ro ad ca st sc hed u les. As she explained the creative process, it is
entirely u n derstand able ~ow the
producers of th e co m mercial were
unaware of th e irr esponsible behavior of a few ri ders which has brought
gove rnmental and 'p u blic criticism
onto an entire recreational pastime.
We appreciate not onl y your
coo p era tio n but the speed with
which the decision was considered
and implemented. Congratulations
on having the staff and agency to be
trul y responsive to off-road riders
and our industry. We will continue
our efforts to en courage noise abatement, and respe ct for o ther recreationists so that in 'the future th e
scenes portrayed by Frank a nd Ed ar e
as unrealistic and humorous as th e
creators of this com me rcia l intended.
Until then , " we thank you for you r

Up la nd, CA
it to be very unsportsm an-like to
criti ci ze a professi onal for thi s
cu rrent posi tion based on his past
repu tation and past riding talents.
In regard to Eddie's sta teme nt tha t
" once Freddie finds ou t how fast
myself , Wayne (Gardner) and Randy
(Mamola) have gotten, Freddie will
just stop," is a bu nch of rubbish .
Wh y did Freddie even finish in
Sweden and settl e for seventh when
he could have used everyo ne's socalled' smokescreen excuse? Can you
answer that, Eddie?
I think it 's time to ba ck off of
Freddie and just let him ride. Cut
the criticism and cu t the behind th e
bac k talk and just let him do what
he does best. To crucify a-rider just
because he does not sati sfy a few
ed ito rs and a few rac ers is truly bad
journalism and bad. sportsmanship.

To not report what others are saying
would be bad journalism . Mi chael

Texan appreciation
I would like to thank everyo ne for
the cards, letters and calls that I
received during m y three week stay
a t th e hospital in Monterey. I am
back home now and healing well.
The doctors installed a 16mm x
400m m " nail" and a cou p le of allen
head scre ws in my left femur. I
sho uld be ba ck on th e track in a few
months.
A very specia l thanks to Dr. Kieffer
for being there when it co u n ted (on
the tra ck ) and to Bates Leathers and
Shoei H elmets for th e performance
of th eir products.
Oh, a nd by th e wa y, I vote for
stronger connecting rods or fluorescent colored oil. Maybe yo u could
a t least see it.
Thanks again for the support
everyo ne gave me. I have missed
being around a ll the great people
involved in AMAICamel Pro racing,
and I'm looking forward to returning to racing very soon.

S7 f ield hearings
Get off Freddie's back
In response to the British GP
report written by Michael Scott, I
resent th e implication that Freddie
Spencer deliberately sto p ped and
that his breakdown was merely a
sm o ke sc ree n to a vo i d d ef ea t a t
Donington Park.
I cannot understand why everyo ne
is out to crucif y Freddie. For as long
as I have read abou t th e man he has
never ridiculed or cr iticized a n yo ne.
Mr. Sp en cer is a sportsman and the
three-time World Ch ampion is due
much more respect than he has been
:g iven.
I can understand Mr. Law son 's
resentment of Freddie, for Eddie has
a lways been kn own as seco nd best
to Fredd ie, but not du e to Freddie's
cri ticism but that of th e medi a. I find
If the su bco m m ittee hearings held
last month for S7 (C ra n sto n)
illustrated one thing, it was that th e

on th e recreational and eco nom ic

Although th e opponents of S7 were
well represented by many informed
and articulate individuals, thereis no
su bstitu te for accurate information
gained by actua lly setting foot (or
wheel) in the Ca lifornia Desert.
A good way to accom p lish thi s is
to have field hearings conducted in
the a ffected area. MIC has requested
that suc h hearings be held before a ny
furth er actio n is taken on th e bill.

.Listen to the King .
The article on Kenny Rober ts in
yo u r July 28 issue was very interestm~. He was correct in what is needed
to Improve th e AMA Grand National
Championship Dirt Track Series.
Bu bba Shobert, who won the Parkersburg Half Mile , wo uld have wo n
on ly $4645 had he not also wo n the
Camel Challenge. Ted Boody, m y
longtime favorite, only made $1750
for fourth place. The AMA shoul d
listen to Kenny 's ideas, because after
all he is th e King.
Most of the races I have attended
are started late. The Peoria TT
earlier this year was right on schedule and that was appreciated.
How about a Ted Boody interview
in the near future?

Seeking trials meets
Several years ago, I was riding with
a trials club based in Salt Lake City,
Utah. Since I returned to my homesta te, Kentucky, I' ve purchased a
new bike and have been doing more
riding than ever before but there's
no one to ride with!
Could you please provide me with
an address or two to which I could
send a lett er or two requesting
in form a tio n about trials riding in
this part of the co untry? I'd be
willing to trav el 200 to 300 miles for
a weekend event if I only knew where
to go . I hear rumors that there are
meets in Ohio and Tennessee but so
far I've not been ab le to connect with
anyone here in Louisville that really
knows an ything about them.
