State line ST win to Weikel By Clay Light 48 STATE LI N E, ID, AUG. 6 Cor y Weikel's last lap pass was good enough to earn a win in the 250cc Pro A main during one-sixth-mi le short tra ck racing a t Northwest Speedway. Weike l h a s rece nt ly emerged as the Spokane/ Coeu r d' Alene area's top quarter-li tre (250cc) jockey, a nd tonigh t, he proved it th e hard way. Expert Rich H ayman (Honda ) and Pro -Am rid ers Steve Librety and Corky Jurk ovich staged a wild, wild west shoo t-ou t for top honors in the 600cc Pro dash with H aym an earning th e win after three tou gh laps. G reg Triber, who has emerged as th e ar ea's hott est 750cc jockey., won th e Pro Twins das h, beating long time Expert Ross Roberts and Mik e Allen . Other winners included Glen Nickerso n (T ri ) in the 39-Up and Russ Yama mo to (250cc Pro). With the a bsence of Idaho's premi er Pro-Am rider Mitch McGinnis and severa l o the r Sturgis-bound Pros, many felt the Pro ranks would be lackluster. In stead , the lar gest field of 250cc riders were on hand. In fact , for th e first time, th e cla ss was sp li t into two divisio ns after preli minaries. Liberty launched hi s four- stroke H o nda into th e lead mom ents after th e stag ing of th e 250cc P ro A main , leading Yamamoto (Yamaha), J oe y Kopp and G len Nickerson. Weik el cam e th rou gh traffic a t a ra p id ra te, pi cking off riders each lap until motoring within ran ge of th e Yam am ot o /Libert y battle for th e lead. Yam am oto sta lled , endi ng his cha nces of a win in the class for the second n ight in a ro w. Yam am ot o's mi sfortune pl aced Lib ert y and Weikel into th e 1-2 positions. Even though ra cing takes a back seat to wa ter recreati on in thi s resort tow n, racin g wa s aplenty ton igh t. Ru ss Yam am o to (Yama ha) ha s been bu sy win n ing either -th e 250cc Pro or 600cc Pro classes, or both, at Huetter, as was the case tonight. Yama moto's mai n form of com petition was Bill y Lenz in the 250cc ra nks and Brad Walters in the 600cc class. Lenz and Cory Weikel, who is · ra pid ly proving to be one of the pa n ha ndle 's ho tt est ri ders, gave chase, bu t neither cou ld p ut the stops on Yamamo to, who earned a substantial pa ycheck. Expert Walt ers gave Yam amoto a run for the mon ey in the 600cc Pro class , but much like every other race here, Yamamoto ran away in the la ter stages to earn top cash payoff with a 1-1 -1 sweep of the three moto program. Walters ' seco nd pl a ce ·finishes earn ed him second overall, in what was po ssibly on e of his last rid es in the area aft er 10-years of Pro raci ng. "I've decided to go to college this year at Boise State. I do n't think ·my racing days are over thou gh, since th ere is good racing dow n there," Walters said. Galles led J erry T h o mpson (Ho nda) an d Husky rider Mar k Lan g to the finis h in each of th e three 250cc Ama teur races for a' 1-1-1 combinatio n and th e overa ll wi n. T ho mpso n and La ng staged a bru tal swa pfest for second, but in th e end, it was Thompson taking seco nd in the overa lls via 2-2-2 performa nces. Morden (H o nda) was unstoppabl e in th e 500cc Ama teur ra nks, ge tting the big 'win after a series of second and th ird place overall finishes the past sev era l o uti ngs.
