Junior Kris Kiser topped a sli m field of J unior riders, a nd Mike ' McDonnell was the winner over a n eq ually sma ll Pro -Am field. Expe rt Doug Davis hit downed J ones in th e last p ra ctice sessio n and Davis su ffered contusions and a lacerated fa ce. Jones suffered a · sus pec ted broken little finger on his left hand. . With only seven Pro-Am riders o n hand, a ll took part in the so le heat race which was won by David Reeves over Michael Rusden. Reeves a lso wo n th e semi but McDonnell took seco nd and Rusden thi rd . The Pro-Am m a in fea tured a three-rider battle in th e early stages wi th McDonnell , Reeves and Rusden running three abreast at times. Once th in gs sett led down , McDonnell had the lead for good a nd Reeves locked up seco nd. It was a different story for th ird , though , as Kirk Hayes, wh o had a bad start, took the show position away from R usden on the fin a l lap. With but seven Junior rid ers on hand, as in th e Pro -Am ranks all ran th e heat, semi and main, The heat race was wo n by Brya n Villella o ver Steve Aseltine, bu t Ville lla had to sett le for second in the semi as Kiser led a ll the wav . Kiser ho leshot the Junior main a nd led the race from start to fini sh. Darrell Davis, who finished last in the sem i, moved by Aselti ne to ta ke over seco nd for good on the seco nd la p. Villella, wh o had won the two previo us nigh ts in Ohio and Pen nsylvan ia, co uldn't hook u p and had to settle for third o ver Aseltine, wh o held th at spot a t times, Wi th a go od tu rn ou t o f Experts, four qual ifyin g hea ts were run with J ones, Eric Ra usch , Morehead and Rust y Rogers th e wi n ners. Next up were three regular hea ts tha t would advance the first four from each to the Expert final. Darrin Erichsen led Sco tt Stump, Rogers and Rausch into the mam in heat one. Heat two saw Morehead lead a follow the leader rac e over Martin L a vo i e , D o n Estep a nd Ke i th J a co bsen . H ea t three advanced wi n ner Will Da vis, Jones, Brya n H ard in a nd Dan McDonnell to the ma in . Morehead held the pole for the main, but a tight race was pred icted as less than a second separated the th ree h eat race winn ers. Ro gers jumped the start a nd was p u t o n the pen alty line. Morehead pulled th e hol esh ot , follow ed closely by J ones, Estep , Lavoie and th e field. J ones moved in to th e lead over Mor eh ead on th e third lap and o n the foll owin g lap the field settled down. FREMONT, CA, JULY 29 Honda-mounted Jon Nelsorr powered to a pair of moto wins in the 250cc Pro class during CMC MX action at Bay lands Raceway Park. Craig Porter was first off the line and into th e hard left-hand corner at the sta rt o f th e first 250cc Pro mo to. H ard on his fend er was T im McClintock , follo wed b y N el son, Sean Con ley , Kell y An d ri s and Mark Myers. By the second corner, Nelson . passed lead er Po rter, th en Porter "ste p ped off" in a h ig h-ban ked berm. Nelso n wen t on to o u tdistance th e field. Andris powered his H onda to second p lace. McClintock, o n a Yam a ha, was third at the chec kers . Nelson had a good start in the sec o n d moto and was foll o wed through turn two by Andris, McClin· rock, Po rter, Co nley and Myers. By mid- moto, McClintock had used a high speed, straigh taway blast to get by Andris and th e new order held lO the checkered flag. Jones AUB URN , CA, AU G. 7 H arlan Bast Jr. sla m med h is wa y into the victory colu m n in the Scra tch main , a nd Eddie Ingels inched out a wi n over J oe Leduc in the H andicap ma in a t Go ld Co u n try Speedway in Au burn, a nd Ingels was officially crowned n umber one in northern Ca lifornia. In gels wrestl ed the number one plate from Bart Bast with a stri ng of victories in scratch racing and steady showings in the Handicap runs. Rounding out the top five were Bart Bast, Steve Martin, Jim Sisemore and Rocky Robinson. H arlan Jr. spent as much time on his back as he did leading the race in the Scratch main and the sp ills kep.t th e specta tor s jumping. With MIke Delacy on the pole and Harlan J r. in slo t two , a lack of space crea ted problems as Mik e Parsons and Steve Crawford had no intentions of being left o ut to dry on th e outside. Delacy, Par sons a nd Crawford raced out of th e first turn, but a restart was ca lled since Bast was still in turn one, lying o n his back. On th e restart a ll fou r were even. Hitting th e turn, Delacy ba cked o ff to stay on th e rail, but Bast was first th rough th e turn lea vin g Crawford and Parso ns fighting on th e far outside. Delacy tri ed to slip on the inside o f Bast in turn three, but Bast held his ground and bo th riders ended up in a heap. Bast changed bikes, Delacy's appeared to ~ ok~y b u~ ~hen th ey gated aga in hIS bik e misfired a nd d ied leaving a th ree-man race. Bast too k the win over Delacy and Cra wford.
