Wh en the green flag dr op ped for the start of the Pro race , it was Kenny Zahrt leading the way into th e first tum. Close beh ind him was Cano y and KTM-mounted T odd Campbell. Gett ing a lat e start was Su zuki rid er Murry Shackelford, after his bike didn 't leave th e start lin e until th e las t line of starters had left. Shackelford was pushing h is RM as fast as th e leaders a nd was soon through the Intermediate racers and clos ing on th e back of th e Pros. Up front, Canoy had taken his Pro-Circuit H onda into the lead with Zahrt in clo se pursuit. Taki ng over th e number three po sition was Rich Truchinski wi th Ca mpbell right behind him . At th e halfway point, Canoy had opened up a sizable lead over Zah rt . In third, T ruch inki 's rear sprocket coll apsed, putting the H onda rider ou t for th e da y. On th e same lap, Campbell ret ired h is KTM with mechanical problem s. Sh ackelford was now running in third overall a nd still charging hard when Murray caught sight of Zahrt at th e o ther end of th e strai gh taway. Zahrt, unaware of th e approaching Suzuki ri der, was cru isin g alon g until he cau ght a glimpse of Sh ackelford closing in. Zahrt held him off for the last remaining laps but taking the checkered flag was Canoy. In th e Women 's class , Tami Rice and her Suzuki ca p tu red the Expert clas s win. She was followed in by Mindy Smith and ' bonnie Warch. The victory left Gray in a tie wi th j eff Blaha for th e series point lead . Blaha won the 125cc Amateur heat ra ce and ended up second to Gra y in th e fea ture. Blaha led every lap of the heat race . Gra y rode secon d until the final lap wh en Suzuki-m ounted jeff Melcher dr opped him to th ird. '" . Crowley cooks at Sola do Park TT By Mike Vancil HOLLISTER, CA, AUG I Yamaha-mou nted Kevin Cro wley claimed overall wins in th e combined 500cc junior /Expert class arid th e combined O pen junior/Novice di vision during Bol ado Park scra mbles racing in Hollister. In th e Open junior/Novice ra ce, junior ri der Crowley had a one-o no ne ba ttl e with Novice rider Sam e Freeze , wh o wa s a board a TT Yamaha. For t he first few laps on th e kidney-shaped scra mbles track, Crowley was forced to tra il th e faststarting Novi ce. Crowley fin all y go t aro und Freeze in th e late goin g , usi ng an inside pass in turn four. Cro w ley batt led b ri efl y' with Honda-mounted Clay Chambers and Yamaha rider Anthony Giammanco at th e sta rt of the 500cc junior/ Expert race , the n too k th e lead by th e time th e p ack powered th rough th e infi eld. By lap four Crowley was alone in front, Giammanco was out with problems an d Chamb ers was running a dista nt second. Crowley took th e win over Chambers and Expert j ohn Rudder. G reg Swo le was another double winner, taking top hon ors in the ta lent-la den l 25cc Novice class and the hotl y-contest ed 250cc Novice division. Rudder, the lone Expert in the race , nabbed th e holeshot in the 125cc event bu t he co uld n't keep Suzuki-mounted Sowle off h is rear wh eel. Rudder took th e overall win, but Sowle was firs t in class and extremely satisified wi th him self for .finishing a clo se seco nd beh ind the Expe rt. T h ir d ove ra ll, seco n d No vice, went to Ca n-Am rider Tim Navarro. So wle was off the line with Mi ke Sturgill and Tim Navarro in th e 250cc Novice final, the n too k the lead going into th e infield corner. By lap three, Sowle had broken away while 45
