H e looked in co m ma nd, but was not, for now Mang was in seco nd pl ace and closing rem or selessly. H e had Cada lo ra a nd Ca rd us with h im , while fast starter McL eod was graduall y being overwhel med , and Sar ron was a lso dropping back. Now he co uld p lay th e ga me h is way , a nd though Roth led agai n often as not , it was at Mang's redu ced pa ce, and at th e head of a growing group th at by la p 17 numbered seven bik es, with Reggiani and La vado ha ving joined til. Lav ado dropped back almost at once , with gear cha nge problem s, and spent the remaining laps with Cardus (whose arm had pumped up ), Sarron and Igo a, the latter having charged up from a poor start . Up front , th e crowd was treated to a spectacu lar battle, a nd then an even more spec tacu lar crash. As a t Le Mans, it was Cornu's mi stake. This time he hit Wimmer , and th e pa ir cartwhee led alo ng th e crash barrier with bits of th e bikes flyin g every whe re. Ca dal ora twi ce led through the tw isty sectio n, and with two laps left even o pened a small ga p. But Mang seized th e lead forthwith with hi s fastest lap of th e race. Rot h said, " I thought by drafting Cadalora, I could gain the speed necessary to catch Mang, but I was too far behind. At the end of the straight, I outbraked Cadalora, but . I was in a bad position. I'd used second gear there all race long. This time I used first, p ut th e power on, a n d th e back slid o ut." Ro t h remoun ted, but finished 11 th. Cadalora made a heroic last-corner effort, and was j ust 0.29 seconds behi nd Mang across th e line. Reggiani never got back in touch, and was two seconds behind Mang in third. Man g's sixth win of th e year takes him back into th e points lead, at 97 points he is nine ahead of Roth. • Results 500: 1. Wayne Gardner (Han); 2. Eddie lawson !yam): 3.
