Graif masters 250 Pro MX in £'ko By Ro lfe Otterness ELKO, MN , J U L Y 19 Mike GraiL took home th e overall win in the hotly co n tested 250cc Expert class as the MOIO P ro Racing crew held another AMA District 23 race at their Elko facili ty. Graif's 43 score did th e trick on a day when otJ1er riders co uldn' t ma tch speed with consistency . In ot he r 'classes , Mike Atkinso n showed great consistency to win all four mo tos in the Min i Pee Wee a nd Lightweigh t divisions, Mickey Mickelson topped the competitive 25-Years-And-Over class a nd Brandon H opk in s burned up the track in th e 125cc Expert motos. The promoters went to great len gths to keep th e du st pro blem s 10 a minimum, with a new water pump fina ll y giving th em a nearly perfect tra ck. Only one new section of tra ck wa s beyon d the reach of the hoses a nd becam e du sty. Severa l o ther tra ck cha nges were well-received by the riders also. . The first 250cc Expert moto sa w Bra nd on Ho p kins jet ou t to a win. Troy Doll a nsky sh owed he is develo pi ng into a threat as he moved up to tak e a second place. Chris H ughes a nd Mike Graif ba ttled their way through th e pack to hold th ird and fourth a t the flag. In th e second moto , J eff Ol den berg blasted o ut fro n t in the first turn a nd was never head ed. T im Bernloehr held onto second with Graif pushing for a third. Pat Ril ey a nd H ughes ran fourth and fifth , respectiv ely. While th e yo unger riders like O lden berg and H opkins faltered in one moto or a nothe r, th e wily veteran Graif scooped u p the overall , o ne da y af ter his 30th birthday. Ti m Ba rtylla led the first 125cc Expert moto for several laps o n hi s Yam aha YZ. Brand on H opkins closed in , driving in a frenzy and got by near the halfway point to take th e win . David T ait and Daernynn Ol son rounded o ut the top four. Bartyl la mastered th e start aga in a nd led early in the second rnoto, Rob bie Engstrom had a better start th is ti me and he soon established himself in the lead. Williams led every lap of hi s three ra ces on Su nday, wi nn ing by margins of nine, II and 22 seco nds. a nd posted the fastest la p of the weekend, a I:50.81. Williams also teamed with Bryo n Lambert to take th e o vera ll win in Saturday's three-hour end ura nce race. The P rod uction sprint portion of th e weekend featured an ap pea ra nce of several Ya ma ha YSR50s in U ltra ligh t Production. T he YSRs, which were astou nd ingly slow on the h igh speed Brain erd Int ern a tional Raceway 's th ree-mile tra ck, made the w i nning S R X600 of Burnsvi ll e Mororsporr 's G le n Chri stia n son loo k positively awesome. Faught sent hi s Ya maha flipping through the back cras h wall section, knocking his seat back and had to ride o n the ba re metal.
