His main competi ti on wa s Kenny Halz in the first rnoto, Kell y Ca ldwell took th e h olesh o t an d led a ll th e way with H arrison behind. Hal z h ad to pull o u t before th e en d o f th e first lap , g ivi n g Harrison th e wi n whe n points were tallied. Com petit ion was extremely strong bet ween J ohnny Dean and Joey H ol der in both Sen ior Mini races . Dea n wo n the firs t heat and Holder tri ed to get even in the seco nd by taking th e holeshot but lost the lea d in th e first lap to Dean. H ol der ke p t th rea ten in g until th e fou rt h lap when he took a bad crash on the doub le, giving Dea n a n easy win. The n ovice riders dropped like flies in the firs t mota. The hol esho t was n eck-and-neck bet ween Bra d Spivey a nd Mi cke y Walden with Spivey th e victor, but only for three laps wh en Walden took over. Not everyone sh owed up for th e seco nd m o ta , but everyo ne wh o did put o u t great effo rt. This time Jeff Stewart took th e h ol eshot but lost th e lead to Spivey by th e end of th e first lap. H e acco m p lis h ed h is objec tive by wi nn in g both the Di vision One an d Handicap main events for th e secon d straight week. Wnh so me regular rid ers abse n t, it was a n ight where th e opportun ity was th ere for o thers 10 shi ne. Co lo rado's Lance Darsow took th e first H and icap heat o n a b orrowed machine from Vince Wold. Mark Edwards and Diem predict abl y wo n ' heats two and three. Mik e Cortese held off a charging Tom Burge for th e win in the last H andicap h eat. Diem pi cked hi s way th rough hol e af ter hole as he m oved to th e front of th e pack in H and icap se m i number one. H e took Burge' an d Mike Buman to th e ma in event with him. Semi number ' two saw the crea m su rface to th e top th ree trans fer p o sitions with Ed wa rds leadin g h ome an ever -impro vin g J o el Monell and Cortese. Monell held th e lead in th e H andicap main event fo r two lap s as Deim was kn ock in g off riders behind h im in quick fash io n. Monell succu mbed to the " Diem Express " o n la p th ree as "T he Ph ill y Flyer 's" Diem 's Cycle/Keech / Video God den looked as if he wo u ld ru n away with it. H owever, Burge didn 't give u p easily. He dropped Monell to th ird on lap four and was closi ng. the dis ta nce on Diem . As much as Bu rge closed in th e co rners Diem stretche d it down th e stra ig h ts. It was Diem a t th e Don H awkins' checker a hea d o f Burge, Monell , Mik e Burnan , Edwards an d Cortese. Division One Scrat ch heat racing progr essed predi ctably as the favorites m oved into th e semis. T he sem is prod uced so me hot raci ng . . Diem wa lked away wi th th e lead in th e fir st sem i, bu t the race was for the o ther transfer sp o t. Monell was in seco nd and riding a medium line thro ugh th e turn s. Buman co ntin ua lly stuck a wh eel underneath h im in each corner but Monell regained the advantage down the chutes. As the y ca me off turn four for th e final time, Monell was o u t wid er than he had been during the previous three laps. Buman sq uared It o ff and dove under hi m a t th e line. An other hard riding expert, Adam Sa bedra, slid into th e fourth spot on hi s H onda j us t beh ind junior rid er , Mike Gresham. T ed Tay lor looked good in th e fifth spot. Sabed ra, pushing hard on Gresha m, wa s finall y ab le to get under him co m in g out of turn four in th e seco nd lap 10 tak e over th e third spot. By th e fourth lap, Gresham had go ne wide, taking tu rn o ne too fast , and dropped back th ree places. Key was stretch ing hi s lead with eac h lap. H offman just co u ld n' t catch up with him a nd sudde n ly fo und himself fighting to hold o ff Sabed ra, wh o was driving hard from th e th ird spot. T aylor, in th e fourth posi tio n on lap si x, was busy h oldin g off J im Long who was in fifth . Key didn't let u p a t all a nd wo n wi th a huge lead over Hoffman in seco nd, followed by Sabedra in th ird, Taylo r in fou rt h an d Long in fifth . The 500cc Junior class rea lly had its u ps a nd down s ton ight. Steve Stewart got his Yamaha crossed u p going in to turn o ne and was down o n the ground before tu rn two. Afte r the restart, Steve Fischer was a lso down in tu rn two a nd th ey had to stagger the restart . Da nny Ca hoon led the pack to victo ry on hi s Rotax. Monte H ill a n d St eve Kasten staged -a n early battle in th e 250cc fin al until Hill fell o ff his Can-Am, which he rode in a ll three classes. Kast en took h is Yamaha to a n easy win over Tim Klauser a nd Matt Pine. T we nty-two r iders entered the ·500cc class on a variety of machines, rang ing from MX -b a sed 250s to 500cc p us h- rod singles. H eat winners were j im Su m ne r , Greg Wagenkn echt a nd Kasten. Glen Gladson took th e four lap co nsola tio n over Bill Gruwell a nd Jim Sm ith. Wa g e nknecht to ok th e closefou ght 10 la p fin al ove r Dave Camlin, who had finished th ird in the first h eat. Sumner a nd Kasten filled th e o th er top spots. The 750cc hea ts saw severa l riders switch mounts for the premier class. Wagenknecht and Sumner climbed on XR750 H -Dsand Kasten straddled a 600cc Yamaha. Camlin took th e first heat over Su m n er a n d Danny Hollenbeck. Kasten took th e chec kered first in the next affair ahead of Ro y Hart Jr. and Tim Klouser. Wa genknecht prevailed over j ames Hart and Matt George in the final six lap heat, setting up a repeat of the principals from the 500cc battle. Monte Hill won the co nsola tio n in front of Brian Kromroy and Tony Rulli for th e last three tickets into the fin al. Wagenknecht a nd Camlin hooked up in a tight war for the lead with the younger Camlin ahead in the middle laps. H ollenbeck brought out th e red flag with a hard fall in turn o ne during th e eigh th lap. Wagenkn echt passed Camlin only to be greeted wi th th e red a t th e line.
