Coffey wins East Side Trials By Michael Beaudoin RI CH MO N D, MI, "jULY 26 T he East Side Co mpetitors Riders Club firs t trial of the year had a good turnou t,' a nd lot s of sunshine for the spectators. The sectio ns were slic k in the ear ly goin g but q ui ckly dr ied out. T he twelve sections were ridden by all except nine, 10, and I I ' were Advan ced and Expert on ly. T odd Coffey dominated the Expert clas s wit h a score of 41 over Ron R uss wi th 82. Gerry Bonkink took third place with 84 and Martin Kerr took four th p lace wi th 93. Dave Waldo fin ish ed with a score of 99, coming back after a long layoff. Brian Ahern ta kes the Adva nced win with 26. Bill Smi th was secon d with 37; Michael Kerr was third with 55 and Dave Ri chardson took fourth p lace with 57 and a close fifth place for Jim Ga wn e with 59. Edge ANCH O RAGE, AK, J ULY 26 Arc tic Ca t-Suzuki Mo torsp or ts number one rider Joe Good blazed to a double victory at an Alaska Mot orcycle Ra cing Association MX held at Kincaid Park; Spectators were gree ted by a large turnout of riders and 800 su ns h ine. All eyes were on Good as he ra n away with every mo to. Kawa saki of Anch orage-sponsored Jason Anderson was the only rider to keep Good in sight. However, i t was only at the beginning, as.Good went faster each lap while everyo ne else tired. Good won both th e Pro and 125cc Expert classes and Andersson pl aced second in both classes. Kawasaki of Anchorage's Todd H aney took the first mo to holeshot with Schaub in hot pursuit and with only one lap to go Schaub passed for the win. Zierman overalls little Jackpine Enduro By Becky Potter MORA, MN, JULY 26 It was the 30th ru nning of th e Little Jackpine Enduro and J oe Zierman took overall honors on a CR250, d ro p p i n g o n ly 14 points . Matt Stavish followed by dropping 16 points riding a KX250. After seven years of tryin~, they finall y fini shed 1-2 in a race. Zierrna n felt that coriservative riding paid off in th e rocks and roo ts. Stavish , o n th e other hand, sta ted th at it was wild riding which paid off. . Team Pee Wee, Dana Koe n ig, struck again in the Masters class. Despite break ing h is odome ter, he rode/ carr ied his KX80 to a class win. J on Rasmussen on a KTM p laced second. . T he H olaseks have turned racing into a family affair. Mar k took first p lace in th e 200cc A class with 23 points; J erry placed th ird in a very competi tive 250cc A class and Craig cla imed H igh Point B honors dropping 39 po ints. . Jones NAPA, CA, JULY 25 The Napa Wine Cup Championship, sponso red by Mother Goose Racing and co-sponsored by KVYN Radio a n d Napa Cycle Sal vage, highlighted the end of the rac ing season at the Na pa T own and Coun try Fairgrounds. T he prerace favorites were Eddie Ingels an d Bar t Bast with Jim Sisemore or Mike Delacy as stro ng contenders. Pickin g up the beautiful trophy and the maj or it y of the $1800 purse was the northern Cal if ornia scra tch king Eddi e Ingles. Ingels, sponsored by A&ARacing/ H i-Point/Peter ich Cycl es/Quaker Sta te, won all five of his races taking ho me the spoils wi th a perfec t 15 p oin ts. Bast po wered his Sierra Products/Bast Welding-sponsored Weslake to the runner-up spot with three wi ns, two seco nds and 13 po ints. Harlan Bast Jr., ran all five races in th e second spo t, but enough points for a run-off for the th ird spot overa ll. In th e ru n-o ff H arlan J r. go t h is first win of the night. Delacy was o n th e pole, th e worst starting ga te all night, Bast gate two, Sisemore three a nd Ingels o uts ide. Bast or Sisemore needed a win to tie or win overall , but Ingels took the gate and con tro l fro m th e start. The other th ree fo llo we d I n gel s and were even through the tu rn. Arnold tops Montour Trials By George Brinkwart MONTO U R FALLS, N Y,J ULY 26 Chris Arnold took the Premier cla ss wi n d uring . 'tria ls co m pe tition at Mo n to ur Fa lls, total ing o nly 16 po in ts o n the l l- section, three-mile course. "T his was an enjoya ble trials." said Arn old. "Most sections were very open and req uired an aggressive ridin g styIe. The sectio ns reflected a good cross section of riding skills." Forty-six riders came to Montour Falls an d each of the m wondered if they wo uld be able to ride. It was raining as th er iders prep ared for the start of th e even t, but, to everyone's surprise, the rai n stop ped just before the first rider went ou t and skies remained blue for th e res t of the day. Dave Reed took to p Advance d honors with a 59-point total and new in terme d iate ri der Kendal Karn surp rised everyone with a close win in hi s class; on ly one point separated first and second. After dropping off a bank into a creek bed you had to im mediately turn and hop over a slimy log. I collected most of my points in this section." Hart cashes in at Washougal MX By Clay Light ' WASHOUGAL , WA, JULY 26 Kawasaki rider Gra yson H art earned wh at would be a week's wages for most by winning the 125cc and 250cc Pro clas ses at Washougal Motocross Park. The pro ra n ks have su ££ered dras ticall y .until the last few Motocross No rt hwes t races. Now it seems th at th ey are comi ng out of hibern at ion. Today, a good sized field of pros were on hand in 125 and 250cc action. H art outrode Dennis Sweeten to win th e 250cc Pro overall. In mota one, H art o utrode Sweeten and Mike Chase. The second was much the same - the competi tion go t th e sam e view of H art as h e flew to the chec kered £lag for a I-I win, beat ing Sweeten (2-2) and Chase, 3-3. It wasn 't easy for H art in the 125cc Pro motos, as he was faced against Eric H all and Kenny O lsen . H art p icked away at Hall 's early leads to overtake the local pr o as did Ol sen . Fo llowing the Hart/Olsen/Hall swap fest was Oregon's Gary Beyer. T he seco nd co ntest was again H art's, thus earnin g the Portlandarea speedster his second of two overall wins after capturing all four Pro motos. With the wins , Hart took home a good size chunk of th e purse. Ro unding o u t th e ove ra lls were Ol sen (2-2). H all (3-3), Beyer (4-5) and David Browning. J ohn Woodley rode at an amazing pace to top the firs t 125cc In termediate rno to. After a two-year absence, Wood ley still. remembers how to go fast, even though h is reputa tion as a crasher still trails h im . Woodley lived up to both expecta tion s, win ning th e first rnoto in fine fashion over Dennis McCo n nell and H ondamounted Dean Brundige. , T he second moto had Woodl ey do a crowd pleasing get-off whil e charg ing th rough traffic.
