Tony Su lek follow ed Chavira in at third, maintaining hi s points lead for the year in th e 80s. Rich ard Wal sh also had a pai r of moto wins in the Begin ner class . Kenny Zah rt had a hot day, taking first overall in both the Vet Expert a nd th e 250cc P ro events. T im Tolleso n won the Vet Interm edi ate race with a pair of aces. The Veteran class was full of aces today wi th Mike Roch ester , novice, and Dan Tufts, beginn er, a lso winning both of their mo tos. The double moto winners con tinu ed right through th e l2 5cc cla sses. Mark Wil son holed both motos of the 125cc Beginner class and went all th e way in both for th at win. The tr end continued with Gary Brinkmeyer , who was in co mmand of the 125cc Nov ice class from ga te to flag in both motos. Russell Fox was pushing Brinkmeyer in mo to two but left the tra ck for a few yards after overshooting a berm. H e d id n' t do it in tentionally a nd certai n ly didn 't ga in by it, bu t th e rules were clear a nd he was pena lized th ree positi ons. Erick Hilton was fastest of the 125cc intermed iates off th e lin e as both ga tes fell , a nd he wo n both rno tos wit h ease. Bubba Erickson chased Hilton all th e way in mo to o ne a nd j eff Barbacovi did th e sa me in mo to two. Alt ho ugh they stayed close enoug h to be a th reat, their a lter na te rnotos were disastrous a nd it was two steady thirds by Sco tt Murphy th at took second. Ti m H olt shot to th e lead in moto one of th e 125cc p ros but Mike Pa sca rella qui ckl y p assed fo r a perm an ent lead and the win. Mercier wins Shannonville RR By Jeremy Fleming SH AN NO NVILL E, ONTARIO, CANADA, J ULY 26 " I d idn 't kn ow how it was goi ng to go o u t there, a nd I kept telli ng m yself to think ab out th e points," sa id a jubilant Mich el Mercier aft er hi s victory in the 6th Annual Molson Export Superbike Challenge, Canada' s maj or road racing event, round four of th e sev en e ve n t 1987 Motoplan-Castrol Can adian National Championship Seri es. " I would get in th e lead , bu t th en Tom (Wa lt her) wo uld co me by again , so we would speed up some more. I feel bad for T om; it was close and I think it would have come down to wh o made th e fewest m ista kes on th e last la p " . Mercier was referri ng to the racelong battl e he staged with Walther that lowered Art Robbin s' o u tright moto rcycle tra ck la p reco rd b y almost two seconds . Walther 's o n ly consolation was a lap recond time of I:50.50, eclipsing th e record th at Robbins set with hi s R othman s H onda back in Ma y at 1:52 .46 seconds. From th e start of th e l 2-la p featu re around the " ne w" 2. 1 mile Sha n nonvi lle co urse , Yam ah a FZR750Rmo u n ted Ru eben McMurter j umped into th e lead foll o wed by Walther , Mercier , Tom Douglas a nd Steve Crevier , th e last pair also Yamaha Danny Bartholomew took third in the 250cc Pro class at Palmdale. FZR-mounted. Walther got' the lead co ming off th e long back straigh t but bobbled, and McMurter led past th e pits on th e fir st lap with Mercier and Walther right on his tail. Mercier sn uc k by McMurter just before th e back hairpin on lap two, a nd soon Walther wa s up to second and challenging. As Mercier tried to pull o ut a lead , Walther fell back a few bike len gths Wh ile McMurter and Douglas were right beh ind. just wh en it seemed as th ough Mercier, wh o regularily teaches the FAST Road Ra cin g Sch ool at Shannonville, wo uld use h is home track advantage to dominate th e event as m an y h ad predi ct ed , Walth er cra n ked up th e pace. On lap five he passed Mercier , a nd th e pai r bega n tra di ng th e lead , dipping into th e la p record on each tour of th e co urse. McMurter wa s o n ly tw o' seco nds behind but had his hands full wi th Douglas, wh ile Crevier fell back. R othman s Honda-m ounted Paul Ma cMillan wa s a lonel y si x th , troubled by engine problems , while Norm Murphy's Suzu ki was under a ttack from th e stock Kawasaki of Peter Lusby in a battle for sevent h . With the big point lead and the cham pion ship for Mercier to consider (teamma te Gary Goodfellow was racing in japan, and Mercier was the on ly other Suzuki rid er high in th e points ), it began to look as if Walther m ight score an upset. But corn ing o u t of th e hairpin onto th e back stra ig h t o n lap 10, Mercier blew by th e stricken Honda wh en Walther slowed and th en pu lled off. " It sure is fru strating, especi ally cons ideri ng it happened earlier a nd we th ought we h ad fix ed it," exp la ined a suprisingl y cheer fu l Walther. Ironically, it was Mercier 's tuner Mik e Crompton who loaned Walther's crew th e parts to ma ke th e repair. Mercier cr uised in for the wi n from Sports Afield/Shoei/Treen/Castrol/ Wiseco/ D u n lop/ P hoenix-bac ke d McMu rter, who was a few feet ahea d of Douglas a t the flag . Mercier 's win ga ve him a stra ngleho ld on th e po ints race with 54 points, wh ile Dougl as' third co nsecu tive third place fini sh moved him into second with 30 points. Former four-time Mol son winner Art Robbins brok e a ca m on Sa tur day and had to use a SLeek engine' in hi s Rothmans Honda , pl acing eigh th , giving him third in series points with 28. Bennett led fro m start to fini sh each o u ti ng, while Honda-mounted Mark Matheis a nd Suzu ki p il ot T om Sarac fought tooth-and-nail for the number two posi tion. When th e dust had settled, it was Matheis edging Sarac for second in the overa ll standings. Twelve riders lined th e starting gat e for the first mot o, a nd it was Bennett blasting in to th e lead ahead of Suzuki-mounted Sean Reis , Sarac, j eff Young, Don U rba ne k and Matheis. Bennett immediatel y jumped way o u t in front whil e th e rest of the pack battled throughou t th e eig h t lap mo to. Reis held on to second place for two comp lete la ps before crashin g a nd droppin g back to ninth. T h is gave second to Matheis wh o was holding Urba ne k at ba y. But in th e lat e stages of the race, Matheis began p u ll ing away ma kin g th e fi n:'! I fini shing order Bennett, Matheis, Urba ne k, Sarac a nd jim Provine. Round two once again saw Bennett jam into the lead and run away with th e win. Ur ba nek was second after th e first lap but he dropped back to eigh th during th e second lap, giving Sarac seco nd pl ace. For t~e rest of th e moto , Sarac a nd Matheis battled for seco nd, while Ron Con.very watch ed th e ac tio n from fourth place. At th e fini sh, it was Bennett taking hi s second win of th e day, while Sarace held Ma thei s back for second. Rounding ou t ~he top five were Convery a nd Kevin Thon. In the 250cc Pro class, Yamaha rider Mike Beier returned to rac ing follow ing nearl y a year layoff du e to kn ee in] uries. Bei er swe p t both motos over Kawasaki rider Lance Gorton a nd Suzu ki-mo un ted Mar c ' j ohnson. H onda rid er Ch ad Gill topped both Mini Beginner mot os for th e overa ll.
