AMA Pro Twins 'oad'ace Series: .ound 7 Adamo breezes to Mid-Ohio win By Paul Carruthers Photos by Bert Shepard LEXINGTON, OH, AUG 2 James Adamo rode his Team Leoni Ducati to an easy win in the Grand Prix portion of the Pro Twins class at the MigOhio Sports Car Course, beating Fast by Ferracci Ducati-mounted Russell Paulk by 29.18 seconds. The Modified Production dass win went to Dean Joas and his Yamaha. Adamo won in more than one way. He won on the track and also in the point standings as point leader Doug Brauneck crashed his Dr. John's Moto-Guzzi only two comers from the checkered £lag. By the time Brauneck got the bike moving again be was down in eve nth place. Although Brauneck still holds a comfortable points lead over Adamo, the Glen Cove, New York, resident closed the gap lightly while still trailing, 105-82. Third place in the Grand Prix €lass went 10 Du'cati-mounted John Long. Dale Quarterley put in quite a performance to come from dead last to finish fourth on his Eagle Racing Bimota. Britt Turkington rounded out the top five on his self-sponsored Yamaha. "Traffic was really bad," said Adamo after the race (He was questioned by AMA officials about passing under waving yellow £lags; Adamo denied any infraction). "The bike ran terrible in the end. I would like to thank my grandfather for all the help he's given me over the years. " Dirt tracker Chris Carr was on hand to ride the BuelJ, but the Harley-Davidson motor "tied a rod on the backstraight" during Friday's practice. Carr was a spectator for the remainder of the weekend. Adamo started the race by stuffing his way under Brauned as the pack entered turn one for the first time. When the pack came around to end lap number one, Adamo already had a comfortable lead. Brauneck held down second with Paulk third, Gene Church fourth and David Kieffer fifth. By the fifth of the 17 laps, Adamo held a plush 8.37-second lead over Brauneck. Paulk still held third with Church fourth and Long fifth. By lap nine, Quarterley was up to eighth and charging. Adamo, meanwhile, had slowed dramatically because 'of traffic, turning only a 1:47.9 and allowing Brauneck 10 close to within seven seconds. He quickly stretched his lead back ou t, however. On lap II, defending champ Church crashed the big HarleyDavidson in the corner known as the Keyhole, giving Long the opportunity to move up to third place. On the final go-around, Brauneck 'threw away second place in the Carousel turn, only two turns from the finish line. Adamo breezed in for the win while Brauneck frantically tried to get the Moto-Guzzi running. Paulk grabbed second with Long holding 0(( a fast-dosing Quarterley for third. The Modified battle between points leader Pete Johnson and Joas ended when Johnson crashed while lapping a slower rider in the Carousel on lap seven. Joas went on to· the win after coming out of "semiretiremeoL " "I could either go around him (the lapped rider) or stay behind," Johnson said. "I went to the outside and he pushed me out in the loose stuff. It broke an oil line so I couldn't restart it." • Ducati-mounted Jimmy Adamo dominated the Grand Prix portion of the Pro Twins race at Mid-Ohio. beating Russ Paulk by over 29 seconds. AliA/ESC 'rues SIrpersport Series: • .." 7 Polen again in .Mid-Ohio Supersporf By Paul Carruthers Photos by Bert Shepard LEXINGTON, OH, AUG 2 Dentqn, Texas' Doug Polen won his sixth Supeisports race of the year, beating Thomas Stevens by 3.577 seconds at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Polen rode his Dunlop-clad Honda CBR600 Hurricane to the win only moments after competing in the Camel Challenge on his Suzuki Superbike. On this hot and humid day, Polen's reat was even more impressive. Donald Jacks rode his Honda CBR600 Hurricane to a close decision over similarly-mounted Dan Chivington to capture third place. Scott Zampach rounded out the top five.. . Russ Paulk rode his Fast By Ferracci Ducati to a second place finish after Doug Brauneck crashed two turns from the finish line. lL was Jacks grabbing the holes hot at the start of the event, but Polen led the pack as they crossed the line at the end of the first lap. Jacks held second with Stevens third and Chivington fourth. By lap two, Polen held a 1.5-second advantage over the now-second-place Stevens. Jacks and Chivington were be~inning their race-long duel for thud. Polen stretched hi lead to 3.2 seconds by the sixth lap, but afte.r that the gap stayed the same. Stevens, who is the only man to beat Polen this year in the Supersport ranks, was keeping the Texan in sight, but wasn't able to catch him. Jacks and Chivington were going at it with Jacks seemingly having the upper hand when he needed it. On the 10th lap Chivington lost a lot of ground in traffic, but by the time they completed lap 12 he was back on Jacks. Meanwhile, Zampach was holding down fifth with Danny Walker sixth. The order held to the finish with Jacks narrowly beating Chivington to the line. "He's hard to hold back," Jacks said of Chivington. "I was sliding aU over the place, but third place is fine with me." "I rode real hard in the Challenge keeping Jimmy (Filice) behind me and that took a lot out of me," Polen aid.
