Jackson wins Clen Helen MX By David Procida SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JULY 19 Another large turnout of Women racers showed up today for round two of CRC's Women's Championship Tri-Race Series. Vicky Jackson wound up on top. When the gate fell for the Women's Expert class, over 'a dozen ladies charged for tum one, arid the rider to be first through turn one was Answer Products' Mindy Smith with Honda-mounted Jackson and Stephanie Jones close behind. Jackson made a first 1:'P pass on Smith with Jones squeezmg by also. With Mercedes Gonzalez racing in the men's ranks, Jackson has had virtually no competition and has won four straight motos. The battle for second place through fifth place was tight. In lap three, S,heril Fedorow, on a a Saint Racing Yamaha, charged past Tami Rice's Suzuki and went after Smith's Kawasaki. Fedorow was seen first coming from the back section in front of Smith and looking for Jones who was ru~ng a strong second. The battle behind Fedkorow continued to be tight with Rice and Lisa Peterson pressuring Smith. Smith was on the gas hard when her front end washed out in a comer blocking Rice, but Peterson dove inside for fourth. Smith was up quickly and now in sixth. On the next lap, Peterson carne in too hot on the same comer, ran off the track and lost the two spots she made up. As the moto carne to an end, it was Jackson way out front for first followed by Jones in ·second. Third throu~h sixth.was ti~ht to the checkered With Fedorow, Rice and Smith being chased by Peterson. In mOto two, Jackson shot out to take the holeshot and went unchallenged throughout the moto. Fedorow had a battIe on her hands with Peterson. The first three places left the pack behind and for six laps Peterson pushed to get by and fmally did it halfway through lap seven. The battle for fourth went on between Smith and Rice with Rice being pushed by Smith. The top five spots at the finish were Jackson, Peterson, Fedorow, Rice and Smith. Results EX: 1. Steffel. bags White City Hilldimb win By Paul Hayes WHITE CITY, IL, JUNE 27 Jim Steffey had the 110 loot White City hill pegged. He took wins in the 500 and 750cc classes. This event was part of the District 17/AMA Hillclimb Series, and the sponsoring club was the Mid-State Dirt Riders. Steffey's first win carne in the 500cc class. His Yamaha took tile win over. his brother Bill, who was on a Honda. Another Honda rider Sam Blakeney, rounded out the top three. In the 750cc class it was the triple Kawasaki of Jim Steffey on top of the standings. A British made Triumph carried Steve Jones into the runner-up spot. He was followed by another Kawasaki triple ridden by Chuck Selda!. Two competitors riding their first climbs of the year, carne in 1-2 in the Open class. Frank Davis brought out his big-bore Suzuki and took the overall. Kawasaki rider Tom Compton finished second. Third place went to the 1200cc Harley-DaVidson of Bob Fisher. Frank Davis was also a double winner. He topped the 400cc class on a Suzuki, while Ron Todd finished second. The fast time of the night went to Brent Stewart in the 250cc class. He is sponsored by Tri-City Cycles, Bill Tuman and Kraus Racing. Mikel Bonoma on a Yamaha came in second. Yamaha-mounted Joh Niehaus ended the night in third. Chad Harbolt got his first win of the season in the Mini class on a Yamaha. Suzuki-mounted Calvin Touchette also in his first climb of the year came in second. Leigh wins big at Stepp Mill MX By Loren and Barbara Williams TRAVLERS REST, SC, JULY 17 The Senior Mini class won the draw for the $50 bonus race tonight. The qualifier saw Honda-mounted David Cantrell gate first followed by Jamie Hacking. It took three laps, but Hacking finally made the pass and pulled away to win. The main had Hacking in third at the first turn led by Chad Leigh and Cantrell. On the third lap, though Cantrell went down, he recovered for a distant ninth placin~. Leigh had a comfortable lead unul lapped traffic allowed Hacking and Brian Thomas to close up. The race was close with Leigh prevailing at the flag. The l25cc Amateur action also saw a real bean-oil burner of a race. Mark Ashworth was the only Pro in attendance elected to run with the Amateurs and was predictably out front. Tim Laskis, Chris Tucker and Jeff Mushala brought their Yamahas out of the first turn right on Ashworth's tail. Ashworth pulled away as did Laskis and Tucker, until Laskis bobbled allowing both Tucker and Mushala past. The Pee Wee and Junior Mini classes had the same two riders in winner and runner-up positions in reverse order. Jimmy "Cujo" Briggs gated poorly in Pee Wee action and had to play catch up. But catch up is all he could do as Phillip Hayes led from flag-to-flag. In the Junior Mini though, it was Briggs' race in the same marmer with Hayes doing the catch up. Results PIW: 1. Haas tops Wesmll Hillc'imb By Paul Hayes WESTVILLE, fL, JULY 11 Uoyd Haas scored a pair of wins in the 250 and 400cc classes at tlje Pleasure Riders M/C-sponsored third night hillclimb of the year. The event was sanctioned by District.l7I District 15 and AMA. Haas grabbed the first win in the ·25Occ class.· His Kawasaki carried him. to the top of the 115 foot hill in 4.275 on his second attempt. Yamaha-mounted John Reed posted a 4.306 climb in the second round also. Tri-City Cycles, Bill Tuman and Kraus Racing-sponsored Brent Stewart used his second ride to finish third. In the 400cc class Haas's first run of 4.076 was good enough for the overall. This time he was aboard a Yamaha. Kaleb Northrup, sponsored by the Torque Center, claimed the runner-up position with a second round climb of 4.122. Ron Todd riding out of Kawtown Kawasaki/ Beta Shop rounded out the top three. His second climb of 4.162 was on a Kawasaki. The "Flying Fish" 'Bob Fisher riding a Harley, used his first climb to win the Open class. Behind him came Frances Steffey-sponsored, Kawasaki rider Bill Steffey. His second climb of 3.856 held him in second. Triumph-mounted Glendal Petty finished in third. Steve Jones aboard a Triumph claimed the fast time of the night in the 750cc class. In his first attempt he went 72 feet due to his chain derailing. When he lined up for his last try he ripped a 3.596 run for die overall honors. A pair of Kawasaki triples took the next two positions.
