The continuing support from sponsors such as these will help keep motocross alive and growing. TAMI RICE· Norco, CA Missing results After anxiously walung for the results from the July 4 Grattan (Michigan) Six-Hour Endurance Road Race, I was very disappointed to ~ee that the Middleweight Superbike' class was omitted in the race results in your July 22 issue. For our team, Off Road Racing, this was our best placing so far and for it to go completely unrecognized was more than I could take. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people involved in the effort: owtfer and captain Doug Flaugh; chief scorer, alternate rider and won.derful wife Joann Mcintosh; aIrernate rider and crew member Robin Carson; crew met)1bers and time keepers Dave and Jim Vauple; and Alan Bechard who provides moral support. DOUG MciNTOSH Clarksville, TN the restriaor test. After discussing the issue, the AMA got the other tool it was using to check some of the other bikes coming in off the race track and that tool fit into the manifold I In other words, the AMA was using two tools of two different sizes to check the same thing. When I asked which tool they were going to go by, they replied that ~hey we~e going to use the one that dId not fIt. Therefore, I was disqualified. I had qualified third fastest and on top of being disqualified from the National, I was disquaItEied for the $17,500 Camel Pro Challenge Dash. It is not the intent of thIS letter to pick a bone with the AMA - a _ battle which cannot be won - but rather to set the slory straight and tell the other side of the story that the annolJ.ncer failed to complete. RUSTY ROGERS Richmond, VA Desert walking This letter is in response to the ravings of Dave Holeman (How You Can Win column) in the July 22 issue_ His diatribe regarding Cranston's Desert Bill causing a ban on street bikes is just the kind of alarmist drivel that makes people think that motorcyclists have single digit [Q's. His problem is a complete misconception of Wilderness Areas and the Wilderness Act, not to mention a "me first" attitude that permeates his column. His public lands are my public lands, too. They also belong to many millions of people who may never see them, but who still believe that wild land for its (')wn sake, 'with its own population of wild creatures is something we need to keep in our country_ Holeman makes it sound like the entire Mojave desert will become a Wilderness Area, of[ limits to only hikers and horses. Wrong. S7 does indeed "lock up" some desert land, but is that so bad? I tremble to think what might have happened in the 1800's and early in this century if people with his mentality had been able to influence the creation of parks like Yosemite and Yellowstone. We'd be having geyser to geyser hare scrambles.and running enduros in Tuolumne Meadows. I agree that S7 could. use s0n:te tempering and compromIse, but tn no way will it close paved roads to public traveL. Paved roads do not meet the stringent cri teria -set forth in the Wilderness Act for Wilderness Areas. I go to a lot of nice places in the desert that I can't get to on my street bike or my dual-purpose bike. How do I get there? I walk, Try it some time, Dave. You might see that the desert has a lot more to of[er than pucker bushes and whoop-de-doos. ARDEN KYSELY Santa Barbara, CA Parkersburg incident It was inferred by the announcer at the Camel Pro Series Parkersburg Half Mile that I was not running intake restrictors during time trials. The issue was not restrictors, but rather the size of the intake manifolds, The manner in which the announcement was made implied that I was trying to get by with something illegal, when in fact that was not the case at aiL. Furthermore, I.have been running the same manifold set-up the entire season and have 'passed tech inspection at every other race track. At the July 18 National, one of the tools which the AMA uses to check the manifold would Hot go into the opening far enough. At that point it was announced that I had failed ISDE trip I am looking for one or two nonsmokers to join me for the 62nd ISDE in Poland. My itinerary is as follows: I leave Chicago ()n Wednesday, September 16, and arrive in Frankfurt, West Germany, the following day where I will pick up a car_ I then plan to drive to Berlin and then on to Jelenia Gora through East Germany. I am scheduled to Teturn from Frankfurt on Wednesday, September 30, but this can be extended to October 7 as long as arrangementS -are made before August 25. The air fare is under $600, round trip from Chicago. Anyone interested in going with me and sharing rema-car, etc. expenses can call me at 312/237-2407_ You can also call Linda Nice ai Pegasus Travel, 312/ 237-6466. She is arranging my visas and plane tickets and while her o(fi<;e is not open on Wednesdays, she 11 there on Saturdays from 9 to 2 p.rn. Remember, August 25 is the deadline to take advantage of the great air fare, so if you are interested you had better get it together. Trade Tech support On Wednesday, August 12, then will be a public meeting at the Los Angeles Community College District Office building at 617 W. 7th Street in Los Angeles. A no,:\-agenda item, our new proposed power productS and motorcycle program, will be heard between 6 and 9 p.m. If you can attend and wish to be heard call on Monday, August 10, or Tuesday, August II, at 213/628-7788, extension 2235. Refer to this as a nonagenda item and you will be given three minutes at the podium. We are running out of time to get approval for the fall semester whidl will start on September 14. Because , of the excellent attention given to our struggle, 86 studems are now on our waiting list ready to enroll in the program if we are given the go ahead. Five of these people are ladies and they will be represented by Elizabeth Morgan at this meeting. Several industry people are also scheduled to speak. Please consider getting on the agenda. We are a public com.munity college and support from the taxpayers and voters will assure our program for the future. Just showing up to suppOrt our s.peakers will be appreciated. As I've said before, it might take the Cycle News Finish Line Camera to determine our margin of victory but with your support we wiJI win. PAT OWENS L.A. Trade Tech Los Angeles, CA
