· according to a team member. . This was a continuation of their problems which started with poor carburetion and climaxed with Steven's crash on the exit of the highspeed carousel. The 1100 reportedly found a false neutral at a point when · they were only six laps from thirdplace and gaining ground. , The race was restarted after 40 minutes with the teams gridding in the same positions as the original . ~ MX DES NATIONS stan. The first hour of action had Solmax, Human Race, Genesis and Red Stripe - coming from the Middleweight ranks on a Yamaha FZ600 - all on the 35th lap. The top 20 positions were all within three laps. Human Race began to hit stride in the second hour as they put a lap on the front runners. A see-saw battle would continue into darkness until the teams had to pit for fresh ru!>ber and a switch to lighting. During one of Solmax's pit stops they had to work on the rear shock and repair a faulty clutch cover gasket, as well as take a look at the rapidly wearing 591 tires. "These are really impressive tires," Ron Bowen said. "The main problem is they are going to wear faster . and. you'U probably see us doing · quite a few .tire changes." He later estimated they changed tires six times during the race. Genesis' Mark Heiser said the new radials "stick like glue" and noted how the FZRs have so much torque and power that they thought they would have a problem with rear end sliding. With the top teams running tooth and nail, Team Gamma parlayed good riding into a lead at the end of the lOth hour after working its way up from sixth at the start. . Gamma, coming out of the Heavyweight Super class had its Suzuki GSXRIIOO, with riders Frank Slaughter, Craig Gaver, Donnie Briggs, joey Whittington and jeff Atwell, in a solid lead. They would lead well into the halfway point of the race only to see the motor blow. The crew worked for one hour and 40 minutes to replace the 1100 with a spare twoyear-old 750cc motor. They also swapped tires and brakes, but the downtime was too much to regroup. Despite a motor deficit they still managed a very good eighth overall, third· Heavweight Super with 932 laps. Human Race Team suffered a four-minute setback shortly before · 1:00 a.m. when rider john Eidenberger was T -boned, breaking the steering damper. Eidenberger, new to night racing, put the action into perspective when talking about lap times. "The outside of the 'carousel is really bumpy," he said. "So you don't try to pass slower riders there. So that determi.nes your lap times if you get caught behind them there." The carousel is a high-speed right hand arc that dumps the racers onto the very fast back straight which is the 'set-up to the kink, dog-leg and turn that leads to the front straight. Good lines and drive are essential here. Solmax was another victim of the Nelson night as they had to pit several times in the early morning because the fairing bracket came off and they almost lost the radiator. . And they also had a lighting problem and team members said they lost six minutes due to a tire change. They were still only a couple of minutes off the pace. Genesis was cranking lap after lap and never wavering from its third or fourth overall standing during the entire night.
