main event at Costa Mesa.
Costa Mesa Speedway
wins to Schwartz,
Krugh
By Scott Daloisio
COSTA MESA, CA, JULY 24
The phenomenal year of Bobby
Schwartz carried on Friday evening
before more than 4000 fans at the
Orange County Fairgrounds. For the
eighth ti.me in 1987, Schwartz
reigned supreme over the competition at the beach area oval.
It was the beginning.of the second
haH of the year at Costa Mesa. The
previous week the track was dark due
to the Orange County Fair but
Schwartz won the ational Championship Qualifier at Long Beach.
After a second place finish to Brad
Oxley in their Scratch heat, Schwartz
got rolling in the semi and won oV"er
Louis Kossuth, Lance King and Alan
Christian.
Steve Lucero started on the pole
for the Scratch main, but Schwartz, off gate two, rocketed into the lead
on the start. Lucero gave' Schwartz
a tap in turn one but from that point
on nobody could get near the Budweiser/Silkolene/C.T.I. Brace/Oakley/Justice Brothers Weslake rider.
Pfetzing got as far as turn three
before taking a soil sample. Kossuth
gota Scratch ride due to rider injuries
and he made the best of it. He went
after Lucero early and put on a battle
for second spot but in the end,
Lucero held him off. The win went
to Schwartz by about 20 feet over
Lucero and Kossuth. Pfetzing had
picked his bike up and finished a haH
lap behind.
Kevin Krugh won his first main
event of the 1987 season in the
Handicap portion of the program.
The ]awa jockey finished second to
Greg Hancock in their qualifying
race but he won his heat. A third
in his semi bought his ticket into the
eight-lap main.
Krugh, alone on the 20, had the
K&L Electric/Lisa/AWE/Mom &
DadiCody/Z machine in the initial
lead and it was his to blow or take
advantage of. He led the first three
laps with no problem but a red flag
came out when Pfetzing, again, went
down in turn three and Phil Collins
had to lay it down.
During the red flag period, Scotty
Brown's ]awa caught fire. Brown
shut off the motor and then blew the
fire out. Officials were ready to
restart the event wi thout Pfetzing
and Collins but they both burst
through the pit gate, much to the
deligh t of the fans, before their two
minutes were up.
Krugh and Tuff McBride were off
the 10 for the restart and Krugh again
seized the lead over McBride. Brown
