Lucente takes win at UttIe Olde MX By Mark Staab Tom Dougan (185) entereel tum one on the inside line and powereelaway to win the Sanaif Road Race. lap later, while Nyitray fought off the challenge of Krum and Korn, the fourth through sixth spots changed, DOW belonging to Almroth, Patchin and Severance. During lap five, Patchin passed Almroth and started to challenge Korn for third, while Krum took off in a determined effort to head off Nyitray. During a space of a mere 10 seconds, Korn and PatChin put on a show of four back-and-forth passes, two of them in the air over tabletops. A battle which Korn won. Krum closed the small gap between himself and Nyitray on the last lap, but Nyitray flew past the checkered flag with fist upraised and a victory yell. Krum settled for second. Meanwhile, Almroth put on· a passing display of his own as he snagged Patchin, then pas.sed Kom in the air at the finish to steal third place by the width of his front knobby. Patchin took fifth while Severance motored to'sixth. Moto two of this highly competitive class was no less excitIng. Nyitray powered to the holeshot again, barely ahead of the barbanging battle behind him. Halfway through the first lap there was a sixbike collision in a series of sharp whoops. Bikes and riders went evertwhere. Nyitray took advantage of these brief seconds to stretch his lead while. his pursuers tried to untangle their machines. At the end of lap one the field rocketed past the scoring table with Nyitray holding a 20-yard lead over Oates, Severance, Robert Labo, Krum, Korn and Andy Tosto. Korn rode the next few laps with a single-minded intensity that threw caution to the wind. He slammed past Krum in the whoops to capture fifth. Korn then got an inside line on Tosto as they fought through a tight, left-hand comer. Korn ended up nabbing fourth while Tosto found himself in the fence. During lap four both Severance and Korn passed Oates to take second and third, respectively. Meanwhile, 'Nyitray had been riding consistently and opening up his lead. With one lap to go, Korn tried one flashy pass too many as he crashed while trying to get around Severance, Un~oItunate1y, Krum was right beh10d Korn, ran over the fallen bike, and crashed. Nyitray took the win and the overall. He was followed in moto two by Severance, who took second overall, Oates a quickly-remounted Koto (third overall), and Patchin, who was fourth overall. ' After recovering from a big crash to win the Superbike class in round three of Shannonville, Douglas finished second to arch-rival Norm Murphy in round four before walking away from round five at Sanair. Riding his Production class Yamaha FZR750R when his Superbike wasn't ready, Douglas simply fitted slicks for the feature after strong performances in the Production races. "Unlike some Production bikes, the FZR just gets better with the slicks," said Douglas. "The only real problem is readjusting for the different performance.' , Evasion Suzuki GSXR750 Superbike-mounted Derrick Medaglia got his usual holeshot. at the start of ·the feature, chased by the Lyte Rapid Transit GSXR750 of rookie pro Bryce Dowler,.Douglas and Kyle Andrews. While the Superbikers played it safe coming onto the front straight, driving between the drag strip "burn out" lanes, Douglas was running the geometric lines, charging at the pit wall and brushing the hay bales. Even with a horsepower disadvantage, Douglas passed Medaglia for the lead starting lap six and held him off going down the drag strip, grabbing the lead for good. While D9uglas walked away for a six second win in front of his home crowd, Medaglia and Dowler battled for second, and Belleville Kawasaki Superbike-mounted Peter Lusby was .right behind, having passed Andrews for fourth. Lusby disposed of Dowler and Medaglia on lap eight of 15, and set off after Douglas. Although he knocked a couple of seconds off the leader, there wasn't enough time to play Gitch up, and Lusby had tosettle for second. Dowler placed third, as Andrews moved up to fourth, slow starting rookie pro Andrew Burgel blasted his GSX up to fifth, while Medaglia faded to sixth at the finish. MADERA, CA, JULY II Steve Lucente took the overall victory at Little Okie International with a second moto victory after Dallen McKenney's brake pedal broke. Darren Vanderpool, of Fresno, took the holeshot 10 moto one with Steve Lucente and Dallen McKenney in hot pursuit. Vanderpool held off Lucente and McKenney for the first three laps. On lap four, McKenney got a good drive off of the -triple jumps and passed Lucente and Vanderpool on the front straight. Lucente slipped under Vanderpool in the next tum. Through the next, four laps, Lucente and McKenney diced for the lead. While trying to make a last lap pass·over the triple jumps, Lucente almost lost control and took himself out, giving the first moto to McKenney with Lucente holding on for second. At the start of moto two, McKenney and Lucente banged handlebars off of the starting line with McKenney taking the lead in the first tum. McKenney's lead was short-lived. On lap two, Lucente got by in the tight right handed tum after the tabletop. It was soon evident that McKenney was in trouble on lap three as he pulled off of the track and headed back to the pits. The problem turned out to be the broken brake pedal. With McKenney in the pits, Lucente took an easy win in moto two and took the overall victory. Results 60: 1. Sandy ThfIVs (Yam). 60: 1. In the first moto Gary Fargo put his 125cc Honda right up among the leaders, but could not hold the pace that Hulse and John Dauth were setting. Dauth would later learn that his knee was not 100% healed and he would be forced to a last place finish. Hulse in moto one kept his Goose Brothers Racing/EP Performs/Maxima/Peninsula Hondasponsored Honda out in front all the way for the motowin. The second moto was when Fargo really got serious and wailed on his little 125. Hulse looked over his shoulder more than once to deter-
