Rickman picked up vicLories in Lhe 250 and 500cc classes on the fairground's 114-mile ov.al. RiPunan, ridinga Yamaha, got a good sLart in the firsL 250<:c quali- . fying heaL. Jay Williams, on a Honda, battled from second for three laps, Lhen succumbed to Lhe pressure applied by Billy Ellis. Ellis pressured Rickman, but ran out of laps. The second heaL was a differem story. Ellis got the holeshot with Rickman and Williams allover his rear wheel. Ellis held off the persisLant challenges to win. As the' feature lined up, Ellis was having trouble with his water-cooled Honda, but he chose to compete anyway. As the light turned Ellis shot to the fronL, Rickman was less than a bike length behind. The-two riders diced it out with neither having a' clear advanLage though Ellis was still in command. On the white flag lap Ellis' engine finally expired, blowing steam all over his leg and giving the victory Lo Rickman. Wayne Eckert finished second, after closing hard in the final laps. Rickman showed he was for real as he blasted the field in the 500cc qualifying heat. Ellis put up "- good battle, but went out after three laps. Eckert came across in second, just inEhes ahead of Williams. The main evellt saw Ellis jump the gun and lead the field into the first tur~. The event was resLarted putting Eilts on the penalty line. On the resLart Rickman led the field with Honda-mounted Rusty GaiLa working hard from second. Ellis was picking up positions from his rear-of-the-pack SLart, on lap four he was in third. As the halfway flags flew Ellis had closed to less than a cycle length behind GaiLa. Again, it wasn't ,to be. Ellis' leg was badly scalded from the earlier encounter, and the pain would not let him keep going. Rickman held a good lead over GaiLa at the checkered flag, for the win, while Jay Willi~ms closed on GaiLa's rear wheel as the laps ran down. Results 250: 1. Chris Rickman (Yam); 2. FREMONT, CA, JULY 16 Bart Bast and Eddie Ingels are quite an ite!ll when it comes to Thursday night Speedway racing under the lights of Baylands.Raceway Park. In another night of strange circumsLances, Ingels rim-rode the one-seventhmile oval for his third Handicap main event win and Bast walked away with the Scratch main victory. While the race track had been rather heavy all night, it only made for better racing in the Handicap main as Felicia led early over Leduc and Solis, while Bast and Ingels were mired in the middle. Ingels finally -took to the rim side and put together two fine laps that saw him rocketship past Bast on the last corner of the last lap to score the victory and cheers from the large crowd. Tiron (;irello had the pole, but with Bast, Ingels and Steve Martin on hand he could only muste,r a midpack SLart. The four riders diced it up with Martin looking like he was in control with Bast in tight over Cirello and Ingels looking to go wide. ' Down the back straight on lap two, Ingels took the A & A Racing/HiPoint special to the wide side and the fans got real excited expecting one of his famous rim rides, but Ingels threw it away in turn one, ending his chance at the win. Bast made the move around Martin on the final lap to claim the win. Kerry Puccio survived a heated battle with Joe Leonard to win his second Division Two main in just three weeks while Brian Pecore rode the Jim Williams racer to third after a first lap get-off. Mecirl Barnett still has class C style left in him, but rode well enough to cop the Division Three main with Dean Newnham second over Mike Browne. TraB-Way ST vidory By Len Breech HANOVER, PA, JULY 188 Dale Gingrich survived a heated battle with Tom Cerciello in the early laps of 'the 600cc Expert final to take the first of his two feature wi.ns at Trail-Way Speedway. Gingrich came back later to claim the 250<:c Expert win in a fairly easy fashion. The closest race of the evening was the 750cc Expert final as the George brothers crossed the· line almost even, with the nod going to the younger of the two, Eric. Gingrich put his Zechman's Cycle Center-sponsored Yamaha in front of Cerciello, Mickey RuSden and a close battle for fourth between Richard Foard and Tom Majeski. Cercielo slipped into the lead as they entered the third tum on lap three. For the next two laps, both riders went at it almost side-by-side, until Cerciello went down hard in the fourth turn. On the previous lap Majeski had displaced Rusden fo; third spot. Off the resLart"the order remained the same, as Cerciello began to knife his way through the pack, moving into fifth after two aps, an movmg mto ou n Foard when Rusden bobbled on the . sixth lap, dropping back a few spots. The battle in the 250<:c Expert final was over third as Gingrich and Dave Lesnick put a lot of disLance between themselves and the Mike Klopp, Paul Crumling, Mike Varnes and Tom Cerciello battle for third.- Crumling finally secured the third spot by the sixth lap. Hard luck rider award for the second AMA District 6 short track in a row has to go to 'CerCielIo as he grabbed the lead from Eric George, Nick Taylor, and Max George at the SLart of the 750cc final, only to have the big Triumph lock up as he came off the second turn on the second lap, narrowIy avoiding getting hit from the rear by another rider. With Cerciello out, the George brothers pulled away from the field that SLarted.to resemble a battle of the .fittest as a few riders failed to complete the event. They raced side'by-side, the quickness of Eric's Triumph against the raw power of Max's Harley, At the flag, it was Eric by inches, according to the scorers. The 600cc Amateurs traded the lea~ three times in the opening lap, as fIrSt Gary Foard, then Jim Chapman had the lead, before Dave Smith charged past at the beginning the second lap, with Roy Collins and Dallas Baer close behind. While the top three remained very close, Baer slIpped into second as they began the final lap. At the checkered flag the top three were Smith, Baer and Collins. Resuhs 250 AM: 1. Todd Hurst (Suz); 2.
