Tarres scores fourth win in Italy FALCADE, ITALY, JULY 19 Spaniard jordi Tarres scored his fourth win of the '87 season in World Championship trials competition and he did it in a 32 convincing fashion. The Beta rider finished his two laps of the 22 sections with a score of 102, soundly beating runner-up Thierry Michaud and Renato Chiaberto who finished third. Fantic-mounted Michaud logged a 117 score, while Betamounted Chiaberto finished just one point behind him with a lIS. The win gave -Tarres a III point lead over defending World Champion Michaud in the battle for the 'S7 title. Diego Bosis, who was fourth in Italy, is third in the point standings. Torrential rain nearly caused the event to be a wash out but hard work by the organizing club saved the trial. Flooded streams delayed the start as the organizers rerouted the course. Rain came down throughout the event and only after the last rider had finished did the sun begin to shine. Tarres started the trial on a winnin$ note as he cleaned the opening secuon. Andres Codina was the only other rider to clean the" opening section which had been moved from the flooded stream onto a muddy bank. Tarres was also the master of the second section where he was the best of the day in dropping only a one on both days. ' Tarres finished the first lap with a total of 4S which was 10 better than the next best score turned in by Bosis. The constant rain caused spectators to desert the trial after the first lap a'nd the best trials riders in the world tackled the second lap virtually unwatched except by the section scorers. Three sections had to be scrubbed on the second lap as they had deteriorated beyond use. Time allowance for the trial was seven hours and 20 minutes and that seemed sufficient for the majority of riders finished within that time frame. Results 1. Jordi Tarres (Bet) 102; 2. Procida SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JULY 19 Kenny Zahrt zapped overall wins in bOlh the 250cc Pro class and in the Expert Vet Qass at Don Brown's Glen Helen Raceway. When the gate fell for the combined 125/25Occ Intermediate/Pro race 125 Honda-mounted Mike Pascarella jumped out to an early lead. Close behind and first 250cc rider was FMF/White Bros.-sponsored Tom Engle on his Suzuki and Jerry Black. Black got by Engle within the lap and set his sights on Pascarella. With Engle in tow, Black started to close the gap. Behind Engle there was a battle for the next three positions with Yamaha-mounted Danny Bartholomew attemping to hold off Axo-backed Zahrt and Murray Shackleford. Zahrt fell victim to Shackleford on the next lap and Shackleford was , soon dueling with Bartholomew. As the duo emerged from the back section of the course, Bartholomew was now in front of Shackleford. Back up front, Black was charging hard and had Pascarella in his sights when he went down in a heavilyrutted corner, letting En~le sneak by. Black remounted in thud and put on a charge that took him past Engle on the next lap. Zahrt came alive late in the moto with a charge of his own and was soon in third place behind Engle. As the checkered flag fell to end moto one Pascarella took the overall and finished as first l25cc Pro. Black scored the 250cc Pro win with Engle and Zahrt rounding out the top three slots. At die start of moto two Engle led the pack with his second holeshot of the day and was in the fast company of Zahrt and Black. At the start of lap two a collision between Black and Zahrt forced Black to pit to straighten his handlebars. Black reentered the rac;e a lap down. Out in front was Pascarella, but close behind came Zahrt with Engle in a battle for first 250cc class honors. Late in the moto Zahrt zapped Engle for the lead and overall win in the 250cc Pro class with Engle going 2-2 for second overall. Pascarella was 125cc Pro and overall winner of both motos.
