, .' Thompson scores (Continued from page 25) second overall, just five seconds ahea<;l of Krause, with another 13 seconds back to Jeff Darland in fourth overal I. Scou Davis led the 250 class at the end of lap two, but his winning margin had been cut to the bone by YZ250 pilot Cartwright, and Folks was starting to close up the gap in third. Miller was still out in front of the l25cc division, trailed by AMAI District 38 rider Bruce Taylor and Case; the Vet class lead was firmly in the grasp of Scot Harden. Despite his 250cc moum, Harden had built up an eight-minute lead over second-placed Steve PillS (who was riding a 400 Can-Am) by the end of lap two. M-Star-mounted Wayne Carlton, Pius' arch rival for last year's series class ti tie, was another three seconds back in third place. As the frontrunners cleared home check and headed out for their third lap of the course, steady rain drove spectators into cover under pine trees. The rain transformed the warm day into a hot, sticky, humid mess and turned the black dust covering the riders into mud packs. The rain made little difference to Thompson's runaway performance. The CRSoo pilot turnea in a third lap just four minutes slower than his race-record first lap and took a rather soggy checkered flag after just over t~o hours of racing. "I loved it - it was wild," said Thompson. "I had a good ride with no problems. I fell down once because of a stupid four wheeler. I was in his dust and couldn't see anything, but apart from that everything went great. It sure feels great to win." . Thompson thanked his sponsors, Four Seasons Sports Center and Fay Myers Honda. "The teeth are totally gone on my rear sprocket. One more lap and I wouldn't have made it," sajd Thompson. Darland turned in a sizzling third lap and crossed the finish line in second overalt just 12 seconds faster than Krause and less than a minute' ahead of Smith. "I had a preuy good ride, f just wish I hadn't started so far back," said Darland, who is sponsored by Sunnyslope Honda/Di,t Unlimited! AXO. "I was in the sixth row and that made the first loop way too dusty. They should've had a mass start like they usually do." Third-place Krause also had problems with the dust. "The dust made things pretty dangerous out there," said the Escondido Honda/Mealer/ Hallman/Shoei/Smith/Renthall/ F8cL/Clarke' Tanks/Answersponsored rider. "It was too dusty to see in a lot of places but you had to push yourself anyway to try to make up time." Smith, who claimed fourth overall and will go into round seven of the series with a 22-point lead over Krause, said he felt lucky just to finish the race. "Today just wasn't my day," said the Cagiva North America/Alpinestai-/Golden Spectro/Mealer/Arai/ Go ldbe It/ F8cL/ Sco n/H R PspOnsored rider. "I had a really good ride going in the. first loop and I had fun when it started raining, but 1 had so many problems it took the fun out of it. Oh well, that's racing." • Unofficial results 0/ A: 1.
