Cranston drew heavy fire from subcommittee member Malcolm Wallop (R-Wyoming), who was the only senator who went on record against 57. "I did not take lightly or kindly to your gratuitous lecture," Wallop told Cranston. "You impune the - integrety of a good public servant (Hodel). He is not present and his response will not be on TV. I do not think it fair or seemly LO impune his integrety in his absence. "This morning I almost objected to the subcommittee meeting, not because I have problems willi this legislation - which I do - but because it'S premature [or us to move when there are mixed feelings in the California delegation," said Wallop. "This legislation, I hope, will move nowhere because its not in the interest of California or its neighboring states. " "It's true that we'd like LO have both senators on board [or such legislation," said Bumpers. California's junior senator, Pete Wilson (R-California), who is under intense political pressure from camps on both sides o[ the issue, attended the hearings both days but refused to take a stand "It's too early LO decide," Wilson told Cycle News. "I need a lot more information. I certainly think these hearings are valuable. "I am here to listen carefully before rendering judgement," Wilson said. ". think there is a threat to the desert but we're required by fairness LO hear from all sides." Con~essmen who spoke aga.inst the legIslation included Jerry Lewis (R-California), Duncan Hunter (RCalifornia) and AI McCandless (RCalifornia). Representatives who spoke in favor of the measure included Richard Lehman '(DCalifornia) and Mel Levine (DCalifornia) - both have introduced similar bills in the House. "There are ways to provide for adequate conservation and protection of desert lands without building a wall around the desert," Lewis said. "Properly used and managed, the desert can be preserved for all Americans, not just for back-packers from Berkeley and those with similar elitist beliefs," said Hunter. O££icials from the state of California made a mixed plea to the subcommittee. California Resources Secretary Gordon Van Vleck, speaking for Republican Governor George Deukmejian, called the California desert, "an important economic resource," and pledged support for the desert plan. "We urge you LO support the California Desert Plan arrived at through the planning process of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act," he said In contrast, California Lt. Governor Leo McCarthy, a Democrat, told the panel, "I would emphatically endorse Senate Bill 7. The sands o[ time are running out for California's deserts. It is our duty today to protect them for future generations." In terior Department o££icial Steven Griles delivered the Reagan administration's position on Cranston's bill. "We are strongly opposed to the enactment of 57," Griles said Griles, who was accompanied by BLM Director Robert Burford and BLM California State Director Edward Hastey, said, "We do not believe this bill would improve the current management of the California desert already achieved under existing authorities. In fact, it represents a breach of faith with those who, less than 10 years ago, worked out a reasonable and bal- SANCTIONEO ,+\\. .~ 1987 GQANDE PQIX PLUS 500cc SUPPORT CLASS AUGUST 15 & 16 • STEEL CITY USA Pittsburg, Pennsylvania PRACTICE SA TURDA Y AFTERNOON' RACESUNDAYATNOON RAIN OR SHINE Twelve miles east of Pen.
