National Toll-Free Order Number 1-800-822~ ~ second and third in the Newell awesome at PuebloMX By. Larry Johnson P.UEBLO, co, JUNE 28 Pave Newell came into today's event with a substanial points lead in the Open Pro class. His class was riding for double points, and he wanted to make his lead virtualLy insurmountable. The Golden Motorcycle Cenrer/O'Neal/Rock Oil-sponsored speedster did just that, as Newell ran away with both Open Pro motos. Jim Thompson finished second each time. , Stacey Cook £lew in from Saturday night's LA Supercross, arriving just in time for the- afternoon's Pro practice. In spite of that, he still managed to go home with top money in both the 125 and 250cc Pros. Cook's first moto of the daY'was in the 125's, and the travel seemed to show it's e££ecl. Cook gated fourth b'ehind his brother Randy, An DeHo££ and Boden Soderbeck, and Bill Perri ton demoted him to fifth ~'fJorlly thereafter. DeHo££ assumed the lead on lap two, then Cook found his rhythm by lap four and roared up LO second. On the next lap, Cook took the lead and that's where he stayed, while Tim Buchli, replaced DeHoff for second. Cook was back to form by mota twO as he nailed the holeshot and ran'away from everyone, including Buchli, who, again, finished second. Cook also had the holeshot moto one of the 250cc Pros just ahead of Corey Cope. A duel was expected, but Cope crashed a few turnslater. That gave Cook a big lead quickly! and he was gone. Cope came up eIghth and charged hack to third behind Kip .Sq.ndell. Cope came from fOllrth to first in seven turns at the start of maLO two, pa sing Cook for the lead. Cope uil t a comfortable lead over Cook, hoping Sandell, who was in third, could reach econd. That would give Cope the overall, and Sandell tried to cooperate. He. hooked up with Cook on the next-to-last lap and appeared ready to pass, when his bike mysteriously stalled. Before he could refire his Yamaha, Cook stretched ou t just enough margi n to ride home s~cond ind claim ,ehe overall. Results o 60 NOV: 1. Shane Anderson(Kaw); 2. Tony Gilman (Kaw); 3. Warren Diem and George Lazor each showed their character during the rain-plaqued speedway eyents at Action Park Speedway. DIem had mechanical problems and couldn't make the call for his Handicap heat race, but came back to win the Division One Scratch malO. Lazor on the other hand, did not make the transfer out of his Scratch heat, but cleaned up on the Handicap side of the program. When Handicap heat number one rolled out under rain-threatening skies it was apparent the Diem machine was in trouble. After trying to bump o££ his []ourescent orange Godden with no luck Diem went on the two-minute clock. Mechanics scurried to change a plug, but that proved useless and tNhen Diem ran back to the pHS' to grab a backup machine the pit gate swung closed and the gates went up. After raining on and o££ most of the evening the rains decided LO .stay for the main events. The Handicap main was up first. The slate called for Damien Cornwell to come off the I O-yard line, Pat CIi££ off the 20, Tom Burge the 40, John Lewis and Lazor from the 50 and Bruce Nelson from the 60. Lazor had his bike dialed in to ride the pole, but the weather was making the pole very greasy. Gl~en that Nelson would start behlOd hlm; Lewis inside hiIrt on ·the 50 and Burge with a lO-yard head start, Lazor opted for an outside gearing set-up figuring to sli~gshot. by .the other riders who hkt>d the lOslde hne.
