Assistant Opinion meant nothing Two months ago, while looking for parts at a local motorcycle shop, I was approached by two reporters from the Orange County Register newspaper. They were intere ted in diHerent views concerning the proposed California mandatory helmet law. After saying I was opposed to it, they wanted to know my reason. "When all you have to do is answer a small questionnaire (test) and perform a figure eight to purchase a motorcycle thatl1as the same power to weight ratio as an Indy car. something is wrong with the system," was my reply. Helmets are not the issue. If they were then everyone in a convertible car should have to wear one, also those who jog or ride a bicycle. We are all in danger most of the time, it's just knowing how to deal with the situation. A week later the article came out sayingIwasforth helmet law. They wrote what mo t people wanted to hear. My opinion meant nothing. Mr. Clayton's editorial in the June 15 Cycle News stated that the bill did not pass, and that wa to ay the least surprising. Photo by Kinney Jones. 4 Your report on the I DE Qualifier in Oregon was an ex ellent one, but I would be doing one of my ponsors (KTM) a big di ervice if I did not point out an error in your re ult , i.e. listing me (third place in the Open Intermediate class) as being Yamaha-mounted. I rode a KTM" 350 Enduro to that hni h, I would like to thank Rod Bush and Jack Lehto at KTM for their help and support. . BOB BEAN Action Cycle Mishawaka, IN That wasn't Scott After three years of riding his tail o£[, two state titles, nurn rou wins at tracks from Ascot to Blythe, Perris to Sunrise, DeAnza to L.A. County and at all three Arizona motocross facilities my son, ott Connelly, was naturally elated to hear from a friend that a photo of cott in a tion was on page 50 of the July 8 Cycle News. Unfortunately, the photo on page 50 is not of Scott, but of Terry McFarland. Sinc Terry rides a Honda, wears Fox gear and Oakl~y goggles we need to have you publish this letter as a correction. The problem being that COll rides a Suzuki for Casa Grand (Arizona) uzuki, wears Gear Racewear and SCOll USA goggles. in e Oll i under contract to all of the above sponsors it is imperative that they know of the error, We understand that you only publi~h what is sent to you and that there is not any way you ould have known of the error. Additionally we understand how reporter/photographer Michael Ro could have made the error, since for some reason there are at least three cycles in the I25cc Amateur class in Arizona riding under the number 4. (Don't ask me why.) Thanks for the space to make the correction. DAN CONNELLY Peoria, AZ Godspeed, Mic One year ago, during the July 4 weekend, Michael Brotz Jr., 18, tragically lost his life while en route to a pro motocross event in Michigan. Mic had a greal passion for motorcycles and enjoyed participat· ing in amateur road racing and motocross. It was always a pleasure for me to share in his enthusiasm for the sport. Mic was a young man of great character and charm. His presence is very much missed this season, but his spirit will never be forgotten. BRIAN FRENCH heboygan, WI Dear Editor Just wanted to let you know that I had lunch with Malcolm today at Bafleroy. Joni and I rode around in hi balloon for awhile and then we played catch with his Fabcrge eggs. I don't think they had any corduroy caps for sale at Mr. Forbes' hot air balloon mu eum because we got funny tasting sandwiches when we asked for one. We did, however, buy you an adequate supply of balloon paraphernalia. I do want to thank you for talking my lovely wife Joni into making me make the three and one-half hour trip JO Ballawaytoofaraway from LeMans. Without a calculator, I believe that adds up to seven hours in the seat of our Opel rem·a-car. For seven hours I believe that adds up to at least one more Grand Prix • trip you owe me in 1987, held for me and the help was tremendous and greatly appreciated. However, the real reason I am writing is to tell people that spinal cord injurie are on the verge of a cure and we need to support research to get people out of wheelchairs, not making life easier in wheelchairs. ] do not personally promote or support anyone organization. However, Bob Yam, a quadriplegic, and president of the American Paralysis Association is using his organization solely for finding a cure. . II you should want to help or just find out what is going on in the way of research towards finding a cure for paralysis, contact Bob Yant, American Paralysis Association, 409 Belvue Lane, Balboa, CA 92661,7141 673-8474. Remember, safer tracks, better equipment, more practice, and greater willpower aren't going to help us walk again. God has given doctors the ability and technology to bring about a cure now, and it will happen if everybody gets out there and demands more money for research funding, I can't speak for all the people who have been paralyzed from whatever cause, but I know that they all hope for the same thing I do - to walk again. MITCH MAYES Palmdale, CA Cheers for the Mann I recently allended a vintage MX race at Honda Hills in Linnville, Ohio. The event put the fun of watching back in racing as many diHerent brands of motorcycles were ridden in the event. It's nice to know that for a small investment in an older MX bike you can go out and compete and have just as much or more fun that you can in current racing where you have to spend 3000 or more to. be competitive. Hopefully, vintage racing will STow in this part of the country as It ha in California so a lot of people with families can afford to race again. I would like to thank Dick Mann for his efforts in promoting vintage racing and (or driving all the way (from California) to Ohio to put on a riding display on his BSA that my family and I won't forget. For a 53year·old he sure can make that Beezer fly. PAUL CARRUTHERS LeMans, France Let me make one thing perfectly clear, SoK (son of Kel, aka Pee Wee Carruthers). I didn't order you to go to Balleroy. I simply suggested you go. That message was given to your lovely wife Joni who aid she gets bored sitting around race track paddock areas watching your father polishing the same piston he's had in his vise since the internal combustion engine was invented ... Editor. Cure for paralysis Thanksgiving Day weekend, 1976, was the weekend that changed my life. Two mile into the an Gabriel Hare & Hound race I era hed. The result was my back wa broken and I was left paralyzed from the waist down. Needless to say, my life has not been the same. Thank God I have been able to continue on with very few problems. Each week I read about charity events being held to defray medical expenses of injured riders and I'm proud that motorcycle enthusiasts stick together. Such an event was RON SCHILL Cincinnati, OH We want Bob I think everybody hould pick up a pen and write a leller to Cycle News and tell them we want Bob Hannah to be one of our demolition erew at the Motocro s des ations. Hannah is a master of the Unadilla track and is one of the most talented riders the United tates has ever seen. He can and probably will win if given the chance. Put Hannah in the race and the other countries will ee what damage a U.S. Hurricane can really do. JEFF KEARBEY Poplar Bluff, MO While we welcome letters from readers, we don't select the members of the Motocross des Nations team. We suggest you write to Ned Redway, AMA, P,O, Box 6114, Westerville, OR 63081-6114, Ned's the man in charge of professional motocross at the AMA and he's told us the team will be announced at the beginning of August . ..
