this bike," said Roper.-"It has a tall first gear and the clutch won't bite; it slipped for the whole first lap. "Kurt Liebmann's bike has a lot of power., but it's a bit of a truck as far as handling," said Roper, "so I figured I'd have an advantage. Pete Johnson could have been a real problem, but he fell in practice this morning and is in a lot of pain. On any other day he would have been right there." "I had a good ride but it was Dave's day," said Liebmann. "I've never been here (Laguna Seca) before, and I'm not sure about the lines yet." It was a similar story Sunday when Roper, who was riding a Team Obsolete G-50 Matchless, powered away with the 500cc Premier win. Honda-mounted Russ Paulk powered off the starting grid in the IO-lap, 19-mile Historic Premier final with Liebmann, Roper, Read and Manx Norton-mounted Don' Vesco in tow. Roper rode around Paulk and BMW Rensport-mounted Liebmann in Laguna's famous corkscrew (turn 6) to take the lead half way through first lap. At the end of the circuit, Roper led Paulk, Read, Vesco, Liebmarm, Fred Eicker on a Seelyflamed G-50 Matchless and BSA Goldstar-mounted Michael Wilson. With no traffic to hinder him, Roper simply ran away on the remaining laps, powering to a 11 second lead by lap six and a 14 second lead by lap eight. He won the race on lap 10 with a sizeable advantage. . 'Paulk and Team Obsolete's G-5Qmounted Read settled into second and third early and held the positions to' the checkers with Paulk slowly pulling away from Read for the duration. Eiker and Liebmann had settled into fourth and £i£th, respectively, by the midway point, and held their positions to the finish. ortonmounted Craig McLean worked his way through traffic to power his way from ninth at the start to sixth at the £lag. c"lt was a perfect ride, the bike ran great," said Roper after completing . his Sunday afternoon cruise. . "They definitely gave me the S10west bike here," Read said with a-laugh in the winner's circle. "They just wanted to show me up." In Staturday's eight-lap Lightweight race, Jim Hecox rode his 250cc machine to the overall win, topping the field in the combined Lightweight One/Lightweight Two finals. "I beat all the 350s on a 250 Ducati," said Hecox with enthusiasm. "That's the fastest 250 I've ever ridden." Hecox took the Lightweight Two class win as well, while Scott Obermuller, riding a 1970 Ducati 350, finished second overall, first Light.weight One. The event, round six in the AHRMA (American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association) Championship Series, was also sanctioned by VROOM (Vintage Racers of Old Motorcycles) and CVRG (California Vintage Racing Group). The week.· end's racing also was billed as the 9th Annual VROOM Vintage Grand Prix. - Results F·750: 1. Dave Roper (BSA); 2. Kurt Liebmann (Han); 3. Tad Rafferty (Nor); 4. David Troetschler (Due); 5.
